HR services for the transport and logistics industry Headhunting in a niche

In a differentiated sector such as logistics, finding distinguished experts is not always an easy task. At the French company Turnpoint the three Raynal family members, father Pierre and sons Cyrill and François, have specialised in finding suitable candidates for vacant positions on behalf of their customers. The two Raynal brothers spoke to ITJ editor-in-chief Christian Doepgen.

What prompted you to establish an HR office as a family-run company? The activities of our father, who initially worked for Kuehne +Nagel in France, Egypt and in Ivory Coast, and later for Frans Maas in Europe from 1984 to 1997, establishing the road haulage and contract logistics areas, were the cradle of the company. Supplying more refugees – the rising price of kerosene Worries over Syria increasing

The dramatic situation in Syria is not being resolved, with the consequence that around 2 million refugees have left the country, and need to be supplied with life-saving supplies in Syria’s neighbouring countries. There is a question mark hanging over the future of civil aviation in Syria. The overwhelming regional uncertainty is simultaneously threatening to drive up the price of kerosene globally.

It was not clear at the time when these lines were being written what kind of a coalition might be set up to intervene in the Syrian civil war. The only certainty was that many people were leaving the country, trying to escape the chaos and suffering at home. But in Syria’s neigh- bouring countries, where they arrived as refugees, a humanitarian catastrophe loomed. Russian firm transports aerospace equipment by air Putting satellites into orbit

Air Bridge Cargo Airlines (ABC), a company in Russia’s Volga-Dnepr Group, recently transported satellite equipment weighing a total of 16 t from France to Russia. At the beginning of summer the Volga-Dnepr Group prolonged an existing cooperation agreement with a leading manufacturer of satellite systems to 2016.

The Volga-Dnepr Group, one of the leading Russian and global airfreight specialists for transporting outsize and heavyweight shipments, has prolonged a cooperation agreement with the global logistics company SDV and Thales Alenia Space, a manufacturer of satellite systems, up to 2016. Private GLOBAL LOGISTICS companies, in compliance with the regulations, were to be allowed to escort heavylift cargo shipments on a par- ticularly busy route between the port of Brake, which lies on the lower, deepwater stretches of the river Weser, and the Stotel motorway intersection. They would replace the police and undertake the same duties as the latter. Why was this particular route chosen? The number of heavylift cargo shipments between Brake and Stotel has increased by 110% from 2011 to 2012, from 688 to 1,446, resulting in an urgent need for action. The pan-European tender for the franchise, entitled «private escorts for port- related abnormal and heavy loads via the Golzwarden bypass», was administered by Niedersachsen Ports. The afore-mentioned bypass of the Golzwarden in- tersection had already been inaugurated in June 2011, and had since eliminated the previously rather frequent closures of major roads for heavylift cargo shipments in this location.

Trained escort staff and new traffic lights In July 2013, the pilot project was awarded to Universal Transport. How to get a houseboat on a low-loader A home in the sun for swimmers

The transport of yachts and boats is an everyday matter for numerous project logistics companies. Houseboats that one generally sees as floating homes on rivers, in contrast, provide a completely different challenge to transporters, because of their large hulls. Hegmann, a member company of Big Move, recently put its haulage skills to the test.

Nearly everyone has experienced large yachts being transported by road. House- boats, in contrast, or floating homes, to give them their alternative name, are still an exotic sight on highways. Yachts with centrally-mounted keels amidships re- quire special supports to ensure that the vessel is stabilised and can be transported safely. Houseboats, for their part, have to ve be shored up in an even more special way Mo g Bi to keep them stable. : The depth of the massive parallel hulls to Pho on either side of the boat overshoots the A houseboat with catamaran-like twin hulls represented quite a challenge for the trailer. height of any special trailer platform. Shipping a massive industrial press across Germany A colossus takes a trip

An 82m ship, two giant cranes, three heavy goods transporters, and all sorts of logistics equipment was needed for two special vehicles to move a 2,500t servo press for the manufacturing of automotive parts to a production plant in nine days.

Millimetres to spare at the entrance Arriving at the Craemer plant in the early hours of the morning, the company Spe- dition Hoffmann, an expert for special transportation needs based in Chemnitz, together with a team from Schuler, took over the further transport to the com- pany premises, as well as the assembly of the press. Working with just millime- tres to spare, the freight experts and the press specialists manoeuvred the massive items through the entrance into the hall (specially constructed for the new equip- ment) and jockeyed everything on to the hydraulic gantry to lift and lower the multi-tonne individual parts. This large movable heavy load crane on four steel supports, erected temporarily over the deep press pit, first lifted the head piece to the interim location on the other side of the hall. In the following few weeks they were able to prepare the three large press parts for assembly, and haul them bit by bit in to the 6m deep, 11 m long and 8m wide press pit. The press bed was placed at the very bottom on four stands in the corners, the ram in the middle, and then the press head was put in place. Finally, the anchoring was done with four steel pins through the hollow columns which were first completed with the bolting of 8 heavy nuts, four above and four below, each weighing 450kg. Competition in Northern Europe Facelift for the Waalhaven port area

The port of Rotterdam is Europe’s leading general cargo hub. Now it is expanding its infrastructure to meet increasing demand for the transhipment of project cargo as well.A comprehensive upgrading of its Heavy Lift Centre, operated by the Broekman Group, is under- way, in order to offer more competitive services in this field.

Competition for market shares in the handling of heavy goods and project car go is fierce among the ports of Northern Europe. Although the two largest players, Rotterdam and Antwerp, are well ahead of their competitors in terms of through put volumes, smaller hubs such as Vliss ingen and Terneuzen (both Netherlands), which have joined forces to form the Zee land Seaports, as well as the port of Ost ende (Belgium), have all been pouring a great deal of funds into the extension of

Ipsen Logistics – soon to be four decades in the African project cargo business Coming of age in the global market

The Ipsen Logistics corporation, which is headquartered in Bremen (Germany), is currently running the logistics for a refinery renovation and expansion project in the Algerian capital of Algiers. With a newly-established central project cargo department the company’s position in the global project cargo business should continue to grow.

There are strict regulations for the pro- ject cargo business in the port of Algiers. Breakbulk cargo may not be unloaded – unless a company is able to obtain a special permit for such extraordinary transport tasks. The local employees of Ipsen Logistics know the procedure, and also know exactly what has to be done to ensure that a two-year project for the renovation and expansion of a large re- finery in Algiers does not have to avoid using the obvious hub and divert busi- s ic ness to another port. The permit the firm st

Eric Hennet: Initially, geographic niche markets, such as Brazil. We’re set to take over a company there short- ly. Then there are Turkey and Japan and finally China. Over and above this there are Morocco and the United Arab Emirates, where we have promising branches.

«Transporting components for oil platforms or heavy individual parts of up to 1,000t each requires special expertise.»

But I am also thinking about industry-specific niches, such as the aviation industry (via the company Tala, in which Qualitair&Sea is one the four founding mem- bers), the auto industry, the pharmaceuticals sector, as well as the project cargo business in the oil and gas trade.

What funds have you earmarked for the project cargo business, which is a rather complex market? Hennet: It’s a sector in which we have invested a lot in the past few years. We’ve created very professional teams, established an international network with high added value, and have made a name for ourselves by carrying out many technically-demanding operations in sensitive markets. Our project cargo work now runs along three axes. Oil and gas, with Altus France, the transport of helicopters or heavier parts for the aviation industry, with Tala France, and the general industry sec- tor, with Qualitair & Sea.

What are their activities in detail? Hennet: In the oil and gas sector our subsidiary Altus France operates from three platforms, in Marseille, Le Havre and Paris Charles de Gaulle airport. In this sector even classic freight forwarding tasks require a comprehensively technical and highly-specialised ap- proach. It is easy to load a container, but transporting components for oil platforms or heavy individual parts weighing up to 1,000t each requires special expertise regarding safety regulations, handling the cargo mass, its centre of gravity, etc. The management of the supply base takes us to the core expertise of Altus France. This is a question of man- International Transport Journal 37-38 2013 Heavylift / Breakbulk Special 31

tenance companies. These talks make us optimistic for the future. In the oil and gas segment, we’ve got an eye on explorations off the coasts of South America and Africa, in Europe, in the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Our base in Dubai is an ideal intermediary for these activities. oup

Glusman: Our approach in the aviation industry is en- tirely based on Tala. This structure allows us to offer an integrated service with a high added value – and in doing so to retain the flexibility of a medium-sized enterprises. Our experience with aviation project logistics goes very far back. We can’t even count the number of helicop- ters of every size, for civilian or military use, for whose transport we’ve been responsible. We’ve usually had them hauled by large full-freighters, such as Antonov AN-124s, Ilyushin Il-76s or the Boeing B747Fs, but also by sea. Our range of aviation industry services is very competitive, as we know all of the legal requirements and loading regulations, etc.

«Our customers often prefer a company with the human touch.»

Industry projects, finally, are the third axis in our range of logistics services. Our ability to manage oil and avia- tion activities, which are very demanding when it comes to technology and regulations, serves as a guarantee for the companies who entrust us with transport or logistics for their heavy individual parts or even for their entire projects.

How can a medium-sized enterprise guarantee that it can successfully manage the entire supply chain for project logistics and heavylift cargo? Volga-Dnepr flies a compressor to Krasnoyarsk and a helicopter to Alabama To the Deep South and the frozen east

The Russian airfreight carrier Volga-Dnepr Airlines carried out two remarkable heavylift transport services in August. The company airlifted a compressor weighing almost 100t to an oil refinery in Krasnoyarsk (Siberia). Feldmann and Goldhofer master a heavylift transport task through the Jura 260t on the road in Switzerland

The Swiss company Feldmann Pneukran und Transporte deployed a Goldhofer THP/ET heavy-duty modular system with 20 axle lines to transport an extraordinarily heavy hydraulic gearbox for a tunnel boring machine through Switzerland’s Jura mountains. The equipment was needed to proceed with work on Switzerland’s A16 transjurane motorway.

High-tech made in Germany – Goldhofer axle lines – and Swiss precision – Feld- mann heavylift transport skills – were at the heart of a rather delicate task recently. The transport route for a 160 t gearbox that had to be hauled the full breadth of the Swiss canton of Jura was nothing for the faint-hearted. Twenty Goldhofer axle lines had to manoeuvre a 4.3m high colossus, with a diameter of 6.3m, with pinpoint preci- sion along narrow roads and across sev- eral motorway bridges. Goldhofer’s ex- perience and engineering meant that the r fe logistics feat was accomplished without a Goldho hitch and with no damage. : to
