Dr. Mehmet ÖZKARTAL’a katkıları için teşekkür ederim. Öğrenim hayatımda bana öcülük eden abim Fatih ASİLTÜRK’e ve tezin oluşum sürecinde bütün zorlukları benimle göğüsleyen, maddi manevi en büyük destekçim olan iki yol arkadaşım canım anneme ve eşim İbrahim YILDIZ’a minnettarım. Münire YILDIZ Isparta, 2015 i ÖZET GRAFİK TASARIMDA YENİ NESİL FONT TASARIMI ÜZERİNE İNCELEME; DENEYSEL BİR FONT TASARIMI Münire Yıldız Süleyman Demirel Üniversitesi, Güzel Sanatlar Enstitüsü Grafik Ana Sanat Dalı, Yüksek Lisans Tezi Yıl: 2015, Sayfa: 161 Danışman: Doç. Anahtar Kelimeler: Yazı Karakteri, Font Tasarımı, Yeni Nesil Font, Tipografi, Grafik Tasarım, Masaüstü Yayıncılık. iii ABSTRACT REVIEW ON NEW GENERATION FONT DESIGN WITHIN GRAPHIC DESIGN; AN EXPERIMENTAL FONT DESIGN Münire Yıldız Süleyman Demirel University, Institute of Fine Arts, Graphic Department, MA Thesis Year: 2015, Pages: 161 Supervisor: Associate Prof. Yusuf Keş The basis of historical development of font design is attached to that of writing and typography. The invention of printing gave a fresh impetus to writing that had started on clay tablets. Along with Gutenberg and Texture typeface, a development has started on classical printing technique. Venetian Old Style Fonts, Transtional Typeface as well as Modern Fonts accompanied this period. The movements has been effected on text characters such as Art and Craft, Art Nouveau, Modernism and Postmodernism with technological developments. As far as technological advancements concerned, designers were able to convert their designs into digital forms thanks to desktop publishing and benefits of high-tech computers. Softwares enabling designers to design more efficiently have become indispensible tools of designers. The first chapter of the study called “A Review on New Generation Font Design within Graphic Design; an Experimental Font Design” semtinizied the definitions of typeface and font as well as the relationship between both;the definition of typography and its significance in graphic design. The second chapter highlighted Guttenberg and the eras of printing as well as the historical evolution of typography. Besides, Venetian Old Style Fonts, Tanstional Typeface as well as Modern Fonts are described. The characteristics of the fonts have been analyzed through examples. The third chapter of the study investigated the fonts of 19th and 20th centuries. Brief information on font designs of 19th century and font casting technologies is given on this chapter. Besides, 20th century font that developed under the influence of Modernism as well as the fonts developed in the last quarter of 20th century with help of computer tecnology are examined. In the fourth chapter, fonts designed in new millennium are investigated. The structures and characteristics of fonts developed for Mac OS X and MS-xp operational systems are also identified. In addition to these, other fonts research thoroughly for internet and web designs are described. The fifth chapter involves the project work. Purposes of this work is to design suitable for new generation fonts. The process of design has been identified while brief information and recommendations are given. iv In coclusion, the findings and data obtained throughout the study are presented. Besides, the solutions to likely problems are recommended in this chapter. • The Impact of the Historical Development of Typography on Modern Classification of Typefaces
    M. Tomiša et al. Utjecaj povijesnog razvoja tipografije na suvremenu klasifikaciju pisama ISSN 1330-3651 (Print), ISSN 1848-6339 (Online) UDC/UDK 655.26:003.2 THE IMPACT OF THE HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF TYPOGRAPHY ON MODERN CLASSIFICATION OF TYPEFACES Mario Tomiša, Damir Vusić, Marin Milković Original scientific paper One of the definitions of typography is that it is the art of arranging typefaces for a specific project and their arrangement in order to achieve a more effective communication. In order to choose the appropriate typeface, the user should be well-acquainted with visual or geometric features of typography, typographic rules and the historical development of typography. Additionally, every user is further assisted by a good quality and simple typeface classification. There are many different classifications of typefaces based on historical or visual criteria, as well as their combination. During the last thirty years, computers and digital technology have enabled brand new creative freedoms. As a result, there are thousands of fonts and dozens of applications for digitally creating typefaces. This paper suggests an innovative, simpler classification, which should correspond to the contemporary development of typography, the production of a vast number of new typefaces and the needs of today's users.
