The first St. Patrick’s Day parade was held in Boston in 1731, with New York following in 1762. While the color green is associated with St. Patrick’s Day, originally the designated color was blue. March 20th is the first day of spring and we will all soon be removing our car covers and unplugging the battery tenders that have been keeping our babies protected and the batteries charged during the winter months. Each year I put a Corvette on my quick lift and work on it during the winter so that it is ready to go by early spring. So far this year my only accomplishment has been loosening the lug nuts on the left front wheel of my ’93, so I had better get busy or I’ll be driving a Silverado all summer. For you Beatles fans, March 22nd marks the 50th anniversary of the release of the Beatles’ first album, Please Please Me. It seems like only yesterday. Our expected guest speaker for the March 5th meeting from Lime Rock Park experienced car trouble the day of our meeting and was unable to attend. Mitch will be attending our April 2nd meeting, as will Harvey Goldstein. It is my understanding that the much- awaited Corvette book featuring pictures of many of our members’ cars has been completed and Harvey will be bringing the books to the meeting. Jack Stacey and I were at Corvette Mike’s on Saturday, March 9, where representatives from the New England Corvette Clubs all met and presented their calendars for the upcoming season. We all need to support each other’s shows and cruises, and this meeting minimized multiple events from being scheduled on the same day. This allows all of us to enjoy successful events and also to attend those sponsored by other clubs. Elaine Kemp and Karen Blandini hosted the event and did an outstanding job. A list of all of these events will be included in our newsletter next month. April 6th is our CCC tour of Automotive Restorations in Stratford, Ct. We will be meeting at 9:00 at the rest area on I-95 South in Milford and then will travel to Stratford for our tour scheduled to begin at 10:00. To insure adequate parking for all of the members attending, and also to have an accurate headcount for lunch, please contact Jack Stacey if you are planning on attending and did not sign up at the last Club meeting. Michael is studying for his PhD at Yale University and has been selected to attend the Harvard summer school/field school at San Jose de Maro in Peru this summer. According to San Jose de Maro’s website, “Students spend more than 180 hours doing archaeological work at San José de Moro and other nearby sites of importance. Supervisors of each study area, trained archaeologists working under Professor Castillo, teach students basic concepts of archaeological excavation, registry of materials, and technical drawing of excavation areas. Additionally, the program provides resources for developing skills in digital photography of archaeological artifacts in the field laboratory. Another important component of the project is the ethnographic study of contemporary potters producing everyday ceramics and artisans who craft replicas of ancient pottery. Programmed activities also include archaeological explorations at other sites in the valley as well as visits to nearby research projects by both Peruvian and foreign archaeologists. Students also visit the Royal Tombs of Sipán, the Site 5 Museum of Túcume, and the National Museum at Sicán.” ge Pa NEW MEMBERS Michael and Deb Humphrey live in Pomfret and drive a silver 1997 coupe. • ANDERTON Music Festival Capitalism
1 Music Festival Capitalism Chris Anderton Abstract: This chapter adds to a growing subfield of music festival studies by examining the business practices and cultures of the commercial outdoor sector, with a particular focus on rock, pop and dance music events. The events of this sector require substantial financial and other capital in order to be staged and achieve success, yet the market is highly volatile, with relatively few festivals managing to attain longevity. It is argued that these events must balance their commercial needs with the socio-cultural expectations of their audiences for hedonistic, carnivalesque experiences that draw on countercultural understanding of festival culture (the countercultural carnivalesque). This balancing act has come into increased focus as corporate promoters, brand sponsors and venture capitalists have sought to dominate the market in the neoliberal era of late capitalism. The chapter examines the riskiness and volatility of the sector before examining contemporary economic strategies for risk management and audience development, and critiques of these corporatizing and mainstreaming processes. Keywords: music festival; carnivalesque; counterculture; risk management; cool capitalism A popular music festival may be defined as a live event consisting of multiple musical performances, held over one or more days (Shuker, 2017, 131), though the connotations of 2 the word “festival” extend much further than this, as I will discuss below. For the purposes of this chapter, “popular music” is conceived as music that is produced by contemporary artists, has commercial appeal, and does not rely on public subsidies to exist, hence typically ranges from rock and pop through to rap and electronic dance music, but excludes most classical music and opera (Connolly and Krueger 2006, 667).

• How Greta Thunberg's Lone Strike Against Climate Change Became A
Subscribe HOME POLITICS POLITICS FEATURES MARCH 5, 2019 9:42AM ET How Greta Thunberg’s Lone Strike Against Climate Change Became a Global Movement The 16-year-old Swedish activist’s #FridaysForFuture protests have galvanized young people around the world By KATE ARONOFF Greta Thunberg at a nature reserve outside Stockholm in January Photograph by Anna Tärnhuvud At the end of a record-hot summer in Sweden last August, then-15-year-old Greta Thunberg decided she would not be going back to school. Frustrated by the lack of attention paid to the existential threat of global warming — not least by politicians campaigning for upcoming elections — she set up outside the Swedish parliament with a water bottle, her rucksack filled with books and snacks and a homemade sign announcing her “School Strike for Climate.” “I tried to bring people along to join me,” she says — she’d been inspired by the Parkland, Florida, students who walked out of class to protest gun violence — “but no one was really interested, and so I had to do it by myself.” ADVERTISEMENT Thunberg wasn’t alone for long. By the end of the first week, her strike had drawn coverage from Sweden’s biggest newspapers. As reporters flocked and she handed out fliers bearing the message “You grownups don’t give a shit about my future,” supporters dropped by to join the homespun protest on their lunch breaks. After three weeks of missed classes, Thunberg finally went back to school — mostly. She still strikes every Friday. Now she’s become the unexpected founder of an international youth movement.
