In light of the state’s projections of a declining school age population in Maine and the projected loss in tuition revenue for the Academy, can the school’s relatively small endowment support the current breadth of educational programming? The current planning process will most likely also bring changes to the Academy. It is for this reason that the Trustees have created an inclusive process that allows stakeholders to share ideas and con- cerns and be actively involved in assisting the Trustees to determine a competitive strategy to achieve the mission of the school. Fall 2002 5 Scholarships Horizon Scholarships Take Students Outside the Walls

his past year Trustees awarded over $7,000 in Horizon Schol- arships to 13 current students to assist them in providing Tlearning experiences that took them outside the walls of Foxcroft Academy. These students attended workshops on law in Washington, DC, travelled to Spain, enrolled in a creative writing class at Bates College, played and practiced with the Portland String Quartet, and much more. Three students enrolled in a five week program of studies at Phillips Exeter Academy. Dana Bisbee writes of her experience there: “My summer at Phillips Exeter Academy was one, if not the best experience of my life...the first day was an extreme shock with stu- dents from Turkey, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Greece, France, Japan, China, Spain and all of the 50 states. My classes during the five weeks were Harita Reddy, Dana Bisbee and Erica Kaufman enjoy five weeks of intensive biology, writing, and conversational Spanish. The technology of the study outside the walls of FA

were intensive. The climax of the week was a public reading of what the students had created in their week’s worth of work.” Katie is “extremely grateful to have been able to attend this program, to share my writing with others that share the same passion for the craft. I give great thanks to the Horizon Scholarship Program and David McClure ’45 for giving me this opportunity.” Laura Doore attended the Portland String Quartet Workshop at Colby College. “The majority of our days were spent rehearsing and performing in master classes, where we received very helpful advice. Working with them was both educational and inspiring. I am very glad and appreciative of the Horizon Scholarship I received that helped make this possible.” Dana and Harita enjoy a Spanish class as part of their summer studies at Phillips Exeter

Phelps Science Center was amazing and I feel more confident as I go into my Advanced Placement Biology class at FA this fall... the thing I miss most about Exeter is the diversity. So many cultures mixed into one amazing summer. I wish people could experience the passion for learning and life everyone had. All my thanks to alumni, parents and others who support the Horizon Scholarship program.” “I am not a pea and I do not have a pod; I am a robust cantaloupe,” writes Katie Walsh who attended Bates College Summer Writing Pro- gram. “The one week course was taught by Kate Kennedy, the pub- lished author of End Over End, and Dennis Gilbert, a poet and creative writing teacher at Bates. A difficult decision was made this past spring. With an anticipated loss of tuition revenue due to a statewide decline of students matric- ulating into the ninth grade, and with future enrollment numbers only looking worse, the Latin program was cut. For reasons still not understood, enrollment numbers over the summer began to look more positive. In addition, parents and alumni called the school voic- ing their concern and wanting an opportunity to pledge their support for the reinstatement of Latin. Most recently, Mr. Hartel was a Master Teacher of Latin at Sturgis Charter School in Hyannis, MA. Peter believes all stu- dents benefit from the study of Latin, not only those aspiring to com- petitive colleges. They benefit by receiving the foundational building blocks of their own language and attaining a strong reinforcement to their grammar skills. Students at Foxcroft Academy enjoy a wide se- lection of courses and co-cur- ricular activities in the visual and performing arts. The Visual and Performing Arts curriculum is designed to provide students the oppor- tunity to learn how to communicate and cre- atively express their ideas and feelings. The program also helps students understand the social, ethical, political and religious dimensions of the arts. Each student is taught the skill of reflecting and as- sessing the characteristics and merits of art works. Students begin their art edu- cation at Foxcroft Academy in Art I. They continue into Ad- vanced Art and in their senior year at FA, they can com- plete their art experience by taking Advanced Placement Art, which is approved by the College Board. Fall 2002 13 FA Alumni Dana Frasz ’01 Volunteers in Southeast Asia

nstead of immediately heading off to college, Dana Frasz decided she would spend a year traveling and working with people from a different part of the Iworld. So last fall and just prior to 9/11, Dana took off for Southeast Asia. We will let her tell the rest in her own words. “It’s been difficult to put my life-changing experiences in Southeast Asia last fall into words. I have so much to say, so many stories to tell. I left the country on September 7th with a group of young strangers who would become my family for the next four months. Little did I know that just four days later we’d be holding each other and weeping together. The trip only got more intense. I’ll never forget my first day in India. We were thrown directly into the pover- ty and chaos of Calcutta, the ‘City of Angels’. I worked in Mother Theresa’s clinics both in Calcutta and Varanasi for a while. I held armless babies, sang songs with homeless children, washed mentally ill women and my eyes and heart were opened more than ever before. We began in the Philippines where we lived with local families and ventured to a local school daily to paint the walls as well as a colorful mural. The 8th won- der of the world, the Banaue Rice Terraces, welcomed us next and we hiked for four days through the vast mountainous jungle. More beautiful land and people welcomed us into Thailand. We worked hard for a week living with families, painting a world map in a school and teaching the children about the environment. Following our hard work, we relaxed on a gor- Dana and others building stone steps to a tiny mountain village geous beach and enjoyed the amazing underwater world through scuba diving. school in Nepal The visit to Nepal was amazing, cold, and unfortunately cut short by the Maoist uprising. After a few splendid days in Katmandu, a family in a tiny moun- tain village opened their arms to me. I slept on a picnic table in their barn that overlooked the entire Himalayan range. I worked hard every day building stone steps to the tiny two room schoolhouse. I’d never gone so long without a shower and certainly never eaten so much rice. I’ll never forget the experiences I’ve had and the things I’ve seen. The pover- ty, the incredible faith and love of the people, the hands of the ill women, the beautiful smiles of all the children, having tea with the Dalai Lama, and all the stimulating conversations: it was all so wonderful. High school was fabulous and I know college will be exhilarating, but I’ve never learned so much about people, life and myself.”

Dana spent part of her travels in Thailand where she met many school children such as these

45 Years Later for the Class of 1957

ary Gellerson Adams recently e-mailed us with Msome info on the Class of 1957 reunion. She said that it was very successful and 17 classmates plus some spouses met Friday night of Alumni Weekend at the home of David and Sylvia Richards Dean. On Sunday afternoon at the Covered Bridge Restaurant, three more joined the group. Sarah Severance managed to contact and account for most of the class. She prepared a book- let for the classmates from bios which she solicited from them. Thirty or so classmates dropped in to catch up with old friends. Some classmates brought their spouses and children along for the gathering. The evening was filled with familiar voices remembering the years when they walked the halls of FA. A few brought yearbooks to look back through and others brought pictures from those days and from the 10th reunion. As the group left the hall to enjoy the fireworks and other evening events, there were hugs and promises to keep in touch.

Class of 1977 Holds 25th chicken barbecue was held on 8/2/02 at Athe Piscataquis Valley Fairgrounds to cel- ebrate the Class of 1977’s 25th reunion. Approx- imately 35 classmates plus spouses and guests were in attendance. Lots of reminiscing, pic- ture sharing and laughs entertained the group. Old yearbooks circulated around and the “great football game of 1974” was of course discussed by all the old jocks. The following day the group gathered at the camp of Jerry and Janet Colbry for an afternoon of sun and relaxing. The weather was perfect and every- one had a great time.
