PRESS RELEASE Brembo confirms leader status of motorsport competitions in 2014 season The Italian Company triumphs in all races of Formula One and MotoGP World Championships Stezzano, Italy, December 2014 – Brembo, world leader in technology and production of brake systems and high performance automotive components, confirms again its technological supremacy through a string of great successes in competitive motorsport competitions during 2014 season. The Italian Company has achieved ‘en plein’ in Formula One, triumphing in all 19 races of World Championship, thanks to 16 victories reached by Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team, winner of Constructors World Championship, and 3 victories obtained by Red Bull Racing team. The company is believed to have taken the decision after indications in Japan that the automotive markets are not getting any better, Honda having recently announced a 56% drop in earnings in the last quarter, compared to 2008. Prior to that the company was looking at other options, such as selling the team on to someone else. This has now been axed and the company will simply close things down and settle all the necessary contractual commitments as quickly as possible. The news, if confirmed, will be another blow to the manufacturer power in F1 as it will be the third withdrawal by a major car company in 11 months, following in the footsteps of Honda and BMW. There are also doubts about the future of Renault's factory team. The news will also be a blow to the Formula One Teams' Association, although the members have learned that working together produces much better results than trying to take on the authorities alone. It also means that there are now just three manufacturers left: Ferrari, Mercedes and Renault, and engine supply from Cosworth will become essential to ensure there are sufficient engines to go around. -

Unusual circumstances to say the least. What level of preparation have you done for this race and how well do you feel you know the 2017 McLaren F1 car? Jenson BUTTON: First of all it’s great to be back, good to see so many faces I haven’t seen for six months, apart from TV obviously. The preparation has been good; apart from [the fact that] I haven’t obviously driven the car. These new regulations… so it’s not perfect. The option was to do half a day in Bahrain, which I though was absolutely useless for me to do, a completely different type of circuit. I said to the team, I think it’s best if I do a few days in the simulator. Obviously as drivers we love the simulator, so I was raring to go. I spent a lot of time in the simulator getting a feel for it. Yeah, it’s been interesting. You know, most of the stuff is the same, but there are a few things that are obviously different, with the difference in regulations, and there are always… it just changes year to year with new technology and what have you. A few things to learn but it’s still a racing car, just got to get used to it being a bit wider. -

Paper accepted for the Special Issue of the Journal of Economic Geography: “International Business and Economic Geography: The Multinational in Geographical Space” 1 The Shifting Geography of Competitive Advantage: Clusters, Networks and Firms Abstract We consider the dynamics of knowledge-based sources of advantage as they move between geographical locations and multinational and other firm level networks using the specialist context of Formula 1 motor over a fifty nine year period. We suggest that shifts in competitive advantage are underpinned by the movement of both architectural and component knowledge at both the firm and cluster level, and in particular we suggest that isolated firms can both benefit from and add to cluster level knowledge. We conclude by suggesting ways in which MNEs can adapt their approach to both location and knowledge development in order to enhance their ability to create competitive advantage. Introduction An important development in the study of multinational firms and knowledge-based competitive advantage in recent years is the recognition that unique, rent-generating knowledge can be found in many locations around the globe. Media Information EMBARGOED: 09:00.GMT, 5 March 2011 JOHN WATSON DRIVES SILVERSTONE IN THE NEW McLAREN MP4- 12C, THIRTY YEARS AFTER BRITISH GRAND PRIX WIN IN MP4/1 Watson pilots new carbon-based MP4-12C prior to the 30th anniversary of McLaren introducing a carbon monocoque to Formula 1 Strength, light weight and structural integrity are key features of carbon fibre chassis in both MP4/1 and MP4-12C B-roll video footage and high resolution images from Silverstone anniversary event now available from www.thenewsmarket.com On 4 March 2011, John Watson, former McLaren Formula 1 driver and 1981 British Grand Prix winner in the MP4/1, was invited to Silverstone by McLaren Automotive to drive the new McLaren high-performance sports car, the MP4-12C. The 12C is the first in a new range of carbon-based road cars from McLaren and the first car to feature an innovative one-piece, hollow carbon chassis structure: the MonoCell. The MP4/1, also on display, was the first racing car, and first car of any kind, to feature a carbon chassis. Watson was joined at Silverstone by former McLaren Technical Director John Barnard, McLaren Automotive Technical Director Dick Glover, and Claudio Santoni Function Group Manager for Body Structures at McLaren Automotive, as McLaren celebrated its role as a carbon pioneer in the automotive industry over the last 30 years. Arguably the world’s greatest ever sports car, the McLaren F1, featured the world’s first carbon chassis in a road car. This was produced manually and took up to 3,000 hours to complete each unit.
