    Osnabrücker Naturwissenschaftliche Mitteilungen Band 44/45, S. 7 – 18, 2019 Steinbruch Piesberg: ein sich seit über 150 Jahren ständig verändernder Blick in die Erdgeschichte Franz-Jürgen Harms Kurzfassung. Seit etwa Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts wird am nördlich von Osnabrück gelegenen Piesberg in großem Umfang quarzitischer Sandstein aus der Karbon-Zeit gewonnen. Vor 1898 gab es hier noch zeitweilig intensiven Bergbau auf Steinkohle (Anthrazit) und – allerdings nur im geringen Umfang – auch auf Eisenerz. Inzwischen ist der Berg weitgehend ausgehöhlt. Die nach wirtschaftlichen Gesichtspunkten noch gewinn- baren Vorräte werden nach heutigem Stand der Technik und bei gleichbleibendem Absatz nur noch für etwa zwei Jahrzehnte reichen. An Hand von aktuellen und historischen Fotos, alten Karten und Plänen werden sowohl die heutige Aufschlusssituation dargestellt als auch die Veränderungen des Piesbergs in den vergangenen rund 150 Jahren dokumentiert. Abstract: Quartzitic sandstones from the Carboniferous system have been intensely extracted from the Piesberg quarry near Osnabrück (Germany, Lower Saxony) since the mid-19th century. Before 1898, min- ing of black coal (anthracite) and iron ore occurred at the Piesberg on a temporary but intensive basis. The mountain is now largely hollowed out. If demand remains at current levels and with current extrac- tion technology, the recoverable, economical reserves will last for approximately only two more decades. This paper presents the current status of the Piesberg outcrop and documents changes over the past 150 years using historical photos, plans, and maps.
