MB1/K Mountbatten Papers: Civilian Life, 1965-79 1 MB1/K Mountbatten Papers: Civilian life, 1965-79 In his retirement, Lord Mountbatten was involved with a great many charities and organisations, both locally and nationally, and he maintained an interest in many of the issues with which he had been intimately connected, notably India, defence, the navy and the nuclear debate. He also followed the progress of many books and articles concerning events or personalities with which he had been associated. Part of his time was devoted to sorting his archives, largely with a view to their use by a future biographer. During his retirement, Mountbatten directed considerable energies to the Broadlands estate, opening the house and grounds to the public. He retained his association with local organisations in and around Romsey, and further local interests flowed from his appointment as Governor and Lord Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight. He became Colonel of the Life Guards in 1965 and he was president of the United World Colleges, which involved him in extensive travel overseas, as did the making of the television series THE LIFE AND TIMES OF LORD MOUNTBATTEN. The papers have been arranged chronologically in files which have been placed in an overall alphabetical order. Further material relating to this period of Lord Mountbatten's life can be found in MB1/L, MB1/M and MB1/O. Page: The Swiss and the Romanovs The Swiss and the Romanovs by Dwight Page For centuries, the Swiss people and government have sup- ported the cultural, intellectual, and economic objectives of the Rus- sian people and the Russian government. Especially during the Impe- rial Era of Russian history (1682-1917), the assistance provided to the ruling house of Russia by Swiss nationals was indispensable and of vital importance in helping the Russian royal house to achieve its cultural, political, pedagogical, and ecclesiastical goals.1 The Petrine Period (1682-1725) Contacts of some con- sequence between the Swiss and the House of Romanov started as early as the seven- teenth century, when a twenty- year-old Swiss soldier François Lefort came to Moscow in 1675 to serve the Romanov Dynasty, and soon reached a position of prominence. Although Czar 1 The Romanov Dynasty began to rule Russia in 1613 when, shortly after the Time of Troubles, Michael Romanov was accepted as the new Tsar by the boyars in Kostroma, at the Ipatieff Monastery.

  • Law and Familial Order in the Romanov Dynasty *
Russian History 37 (2010) 389–411 brill.nl/ruhi “For the Firm Maintenance of the Dignity and Tranquility of the Imperial Family”: Law and Familial Order in the Romanov Dynasty * Russell E. Martin Westminster College Abstract Th is article examines the Law of Succession and the Statute on the Imperial Family, texts which were issued by Emperor Paul I on April 5,1797, and which regulated the succession to the throne and the structure of the Romanov dynasty as a family down to the end of the empire in 1917. It also analyzes the revisions introduced in these texts by subsequent emperors, focusing particu- larly on the development of a requirement for equal marriage and for marrying Orthodox spouses. Th e article argues that changing circumstances in the dynasty—its rapid increase in numbers, its growing demands on the fi nancial resources of the Imperial Household, its struggle to resist morganatic and interfaith marriages—forced changes to provisions in the Law and Statute, and that the Romanovs debated and reformed the structure of the Imperial Family in the context of the provisions of these laws. Th e article shows how these Imperial House laws served as a vitally important arena for reform and legal culture in pre-revolutionary Russia. Keywords Paul I, Alexander III , Fundamental Laws of Russia , Statute on the Imperial Family , Succession , Romanov dynasty Th e death of Grand Duchess Leonida Georgievna on the night of May 23-24, 2010, garnered more media coverage in Russia than is typical for members of the Russian Imperial house. As the widow of Grand Duke Vladimir Kirillovich (1917-1992), the legitimist claimant to the vacant Russian throne (the fi rst * ) I wish to thank the staff of Hillman Library of the University of Pittsburgh, for their assistance to me while working in the stacks on this project, and Connie Davis, the intrepid interlibrary loan administrator of McGill Library at Westminster College, for her time and help fi nding sources for me.

Kulikovsky and his wife Ludmila visited Vyatka. They were invited by the regional public organization "Revival of Vyatka". Paul E. Kulikovsky - "Kirov, or Vyatka as we prefer to call the city, was one of the places on our "to-visit-list", as we want to visit all the places in Russia directly related to the Romanovs, and especially those in which the Romanovs were in exile after the revolution. That is why first of all were visited Romanov related locations and city landmarks. But for the local citizens the main event was a presentation of the book of memoirs of Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna “25 Chapters of my life”, followed by a press- conference. City history The city is actually called Kirov - in honour of one of the Stalin co- workers – Sergei Kirov killed in 1934 – but many citizens still use the historical name Vyatka. It was established in 1174. From 1457 to 1780 it was called Khlynov, from 1780 to 1934 Vyatka, and now Kirov. It is the administrative centre of the Kirov region and located on the Vyatka River, 896 km northeast of Moscow. Population is about 507,155 (2018).

In 1838 he entered the United States Navy as a midshipman and served for eighteen years, taking part in the war with Mexico. Having attained the rank of lieutenant, he resigned in 1856 to engage in a manufacturing business in Lawrence, Massachusetts. In 1861 he was appointed by President Lincoln as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and held that office until the close of the civil war. • Wendall Dayley
The Right to Rule An Alternate History Novella A Creative Project By Wendall Dayley BIS 490 Spring 2007 Wendall Dayley Chapter 1 March, 1881 Nicholas Romanov knew the successive explosions that shook the windows of the Winter Palace meant pain and suffering for him and his family. He could not explain how he knew, he just knew. He did not have long to wait before his fears were confirmed. A pair of uniformed Cossacks brought a litter bearing the bloodied body of his grandfather, Alexander Nicholaevich Romanov, Tsar of all the Russias, into the study and laid it gently on the marble floor at his wife’s feet. The Tsar’s morganatic wife, Princess Yourievsky, blanched at the sight but kept her composure. She sent for a messenger to retrieve the Tsarevich, Alexander's eldest son and heir, Alexander Alexandrovich, and a doctor. When the runners had left on their errands, she called for bandages and water. The glance the Princess shared with Nicholas’ mother conveyed her belief that medical ministrations would prove futile. As news of the tragedy spread, the sounds of mourning began to drift through the halls of the Winter Palace. The cries of grief reverberated off the gilded walls and suddenly crowded passageways as servants and retainers scrambled about in a panic. Nicholas, oblivious to the lamentation of his household, stared in shock and horror at the mutilated body of his grandfather, Tsar Alexander II. The state of the Tsar’s body held him transfixed. An assassin’s bomb had blown one leg apart, nearly severing it cleanly from the thigh at the knee.

  • MAHATMA GANDHI His Life & Times
Mahatma Gandhi – His Life & Times Written by: Louis Fischer First published by Jonathan Cape in London in 1951 Published by: Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan K. M. Munshi Marge, Mumbai 400 007 Email: [email protected] Website: www.bhavans.info 2 MAHATMA GANDHI His Life & Times KULAPATI’S PREFACE The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan—that Institute of Indian Culture in Bombay—needed a Book University, a series of books which, if read, would serve the purpose of providing higher education. Particular emphasis, however, was to be put on such literature as revealed the deeper impulsions of India. As a first step, it was decided to bring out in English 100 books, 50 of which were to be taken in hand, almost at once. It is our intention to publish the books we select, not only in English but also in the following Indian languages: Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. This scheme, involving the publication of 900 volumes, requires ample funds and an all-India organisation. The Bhavan is exerting its utmost to supply them. The objectives for which the Bhavan stands are the reintegration of Indian culture in the light of modern knowledge and to suit our present-day needs and the resuscitation of its fundamental values in their pristine vigour. Let me make our goal more explicit: We seek the dignity of man, which necessarily implies the creation of social conditions which would allow him freedom to evolve along the lines of his own temperament and capacities; we seek the harmony of individual efforts and social relations, not in any makeshift way, but within the frame- work of the Moral Order; we seek the creative art of life, by the alchemy of which human limitations are progressively transmuted, so that man may become the instrument of God, and is able to see Him in all and all in Him.

PPeettteerrrssbbuurrrgg The Small Throne Room in Hermitage opened after restoration On 9 of December 2015, during the 'Days of the Hermitage' - its 251 years anniversary - took place the ceremony of opening the Peter the Great (Small Throne) Room after the restoration. Mikhail Borisovich Piotrovsky, General Director of the State Hermitage, Svetlana Borisovna Adaksin, Deputy General Director and Chief Curator of the State Hermitage, Tatyana Alexandrovna Baranova, head of the Department for Scientific Restoration and Conservation, staff of the Department for Scientific Restoration and Conservation and Guillaume Verzier, owner of the Prelle factory participated in the ceremony. In his introduction Mikhail Borisovich said: “We are very pleased to be friends with the firm Prelle, which like the Hermitage as a symbol of historical continuity. We welcome Monsieur Guillaume Verzier, who has brought priceless materials kept in the Prelle company archives. We thank everyone who made this remarkable opening possible! Above all, the golden hands of our restorers!” In turn, Guillaume Verzier thanked the Director and staff of the museum for the opportunity to become involved in the restoration of the Small Throne Room. “It is a great honor for the Prelle factory to reproduce the velvet just as it was made 150 years ago,” he said, “in the very same conditions, in the very same workshops that were used in 1856.” It is precisely the fabric finish of the Peter the Great Hall which stands out for its exceptional sumptuousness and attracts particular attention: around the whole room – on the walls lined with red Lyons velvet, in the gilded décor of the frieze, in the painting on the vaults – are Russian coats-of-arms, crowns and wreathes of glory.
