Project duration October 2008 – September 2011 3. Goals The project has general and specific goals. General goals: o Harmonisation of health care systems of neighbouring EU countries o Finding synergies and thus improving efficient use of financial resources of both countries o Cooperation aiming towards cross-border health care o Defining common quality criteria in hospital care, rescue services and health care administration o Improving communication between inhabitants of the border regions Specific goals: o Improving awareness about the population in the region o Prevention by improving living conditions concerning the environment and health care o Exchange of epidemiological data o Cross-border information about current infectious diseases o Possibilities of cooperation between the South Moravian Region and Lower Austria in radiotherapeutical care o Extending cross-border communication of ambulance services in South Moravia and Lower Austria Working groups Four working groups were started for this project, focusing on the specific goals: o Steering group o Hospital Care o A m b u lance Rescue Service o Epidemiology The working groups are responsible for the direct implementation of project activities. It will also support exchange of information and knowledge and possibly also common adjustments to future health care in the border regions. The project also has synergies with other activities (and projects) in the programme area. o Language Competence Centre (SKZ): language courses offered by SKZ will be attended by the Health project participants. Lucie Karpíšková, Jitka Pačinková discussion 13:00 conclusion of the opening meeting, refreshments Photos will be inserted here On 17 June 2009, the opening meeting of the Health project took place in the Therme Laa Hotel in Laa an der Thaya. Thirty-two persons participated, as members of the steering group and the project working groups, Epidemiology, Hospital Care, Ambulance Rescue Service. The meeting was opened by the mayor of Laa, Ing. Manfred Fass, the mayor of Poysdorf Mag. Karl Wilfing and the councillor for health care of the South Moravian Region MUDr. Oldřich Ryšavý. Mag. Elke Ledl introduced the project and then followed with a presentation of Brigitte van der Zanden who wor k s in the Maas – Rhein Euroregion and who has been collecting experience in cross-border health care for some time. After the break, J. Pačinková, representative of Weinviertel Management, and L. Karpíšková from the South Moravian Regional Development Agency introduced the specific content of the project, its goals and outcomes. Open discussion followed. The meeting was concluded by a press conference with 10 media representatives and 2 Czech television teams. Ledl, representative of the leading partner – the Lower Austria Hospital Holding , presented the specific structure of the project, tasks of individual working groups, further steps until the end of 2009 and first half of 2010. Mrs. Brigitte van der Zanden then introduced an example from the M a a s-Rhein r eg ion, regarding costs refunds. Participants then became acquainted with the advertising of the project (website, leaflets, newsletter). After the break, working group members discussed separately about the tasks and goals which need to be achieved during the project. They also agreed on the dates of future working group meetings.     A new family of giant Jurassic–Cretaceous littorinoid gastropods from the northern Tethys shelf MATHIAS HARZHAUSER and SIMON SCHNEIDER Harzhauser, M. and Schneider, S. 2014. A new family of giant Jurassic–Cretaceous littorinoid gastropods from the northern Tethys shelf. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 59 (2): 367–378. The giant, up to 40 cm high littorinoid gastropods from the Middle Tithonian to Berriasian carbonates of the Al- pine-Carpathian northern Tethys margin are assigned to the genus Leviathania. The genus is distributed from Spain to the Caucasus. Some species formed dense populations in the wide-spread, highly productive lagoonal environments situated on the carbonate platforms of Ernstbrunn (Austria), Mikulov, Štramberk (both Czech Republic), and Nyzhniv (Ukraine). The conspicuous morphology, comprising very large shells with strongly angulated whorls and especially the phaneromphalous umbilicus exclude the traditional attributions of this genus to the families Purpurinidae and Purpuroideidae. Therefore, we establish the new family Leviathaniidae for the type genus Leviathania. The family comprises the largest pre-Cenozoic gastropods, represented by a yet unnamed gigantic Leviathania species from the latest Tithonian or early Berriasian of Ukraine. The gastropods are tentatively assumed to have fed omnivorous, i.e., on a mixed detrital-algal diet, based on comparable population densities as the large modern queen conch Lobatus gigas from the Caribbean Sea. In case yes, to what extent and under what conditions. Three districts in the South-Moravian Region, Znojmo, Bˇreclav, and Hodonín, situated in the rural borderland with Austria and Slovakia represented the study area. Both geographical and sociological methods were used to gather evidence for cultural tourism in that study. Firstly, attractiveness analysis of the area defined for cultural tourism took place. Next, factors influencing the potential for cultural tourism affecting rural development in South Moravia were evaluated. Finally, synergistic relations were discussed. In the territory, many forms of tourism intersect. Based on the results, it can be stated that cultural tourism can hardly be the main driver of rural development after the decline of agriculture because the region’s economy has branched out in several directions. However, it can be an important complementary activity that yields both economic and non-economic benefits.

    BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE: RULERS, CITIES, AND “THEIR” JEWS IN AUSTRIA DURING THE PERSECUTIONS OF THE FOURTEENTH CENTURY* Eveline Brugger The legal status of Jews in medieval Austria had been defijined in the thir- teenth century, at a time when the number of Jewish inhabitants and Jewish settlements was growing; a long struggle for the actual rule over the Jews between the Austrian duke and the emperor eventually ended in favor of the duke. The Austrian dukes granted their Jews protection and privileges in exchange for considerable taxation and ducal control of Jewish business.1 This arrangement worked smoothly during the thirteenth century, which was mostly a time of peace and prosperity for the Austrian Jewry. However, their dependency on ducal protection left them in a very precarious situa- tion during the fourteenth century, which brought about a steady deterio- ration of the overall status of the Austrian Jews.2 The fijirst persecution of Jews in Austria that went beyond an attack against a single person or family occurred in 1294, in the small Lower Austrian town of Laa an der Thaya . The isochron defines an age of 551 ±6 m. y., the initial Sr ratio of .70961 ±.00034 points to crustal origin. The emplace­ ment occurred in the course of the cadomian cycle. Zusammenfassung Gesamtgesteinsproben des Thaya (Dyje) Plutons im Moravikum der Böhmischen Masse ergaben mit der Rb-Sr Methode ein Alter von 551 ±6 Mio. J. Das initiale Strontiumver- hältnis von .70961 ± .00034 weist auf eine Entstehung in der Kruste hin. Die Platznahme erfolgte während der cadomischen Orogenese. The granitoid body of the Thaya (Dyje) batholith is part of the Moravian Zone, the southeasternmost unit of the Bohemian Mass. It shows a bent lenticular shape extending from Czechoslovakia to Austria in NE—SW direction. It covers an area of approximately 600 km2 (fig. 1). More than two thirds are overlain by tertiary and unmetamorphosed paleozoic sediments.

Addressing some of the questions addressed by scoping paper Topics 1.The main challenges of Danube region is to enable the overcome historic division, without causing “transport avalanches” which in consequence would make it impossible keep to energy input, energy dependencies and greenhouse gases under control. On the other hand keeping the Danube river basin on track towards reduced energy input, decreased dependency of energy resources, decarbonization needs to be managed without disabling “convergence”. Transport should not only be seen as reduced technical aspects and not limited to the construction and development of technical infrastructure. Organizational issues, aspects of spatial-planning and life-style need to be part of the portfolio at well. Additional “cohesion” needs to be balanced against keeping potentials for regional (local) development keeping in mind the principles of subsidiarity Inland navigation can fill a significant niche but by far does not have the potential to address transport problems as a whole.
