  • A New Family of Giant Jurassic–Cretaceous Littorinoid Gastropods from the Northern Tethys Shelf
A new family of giant Jurassic–Cretaceous littorinoid gastropods from the northern Tethys shelf MATHIAS HARZHAUSER and SIMON SCHNEIDER Harzhauser, M. and Schneider, S. 2014. A new family of giant Jurassic–Cretaceous littorinoid gastropods from the northern Tethys shelf. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 59 (2): 367–378. The giant, up to 40 cm high littorinoid gastropods from the Middle Tithonian to Berriasian carbonates of the Al- pine-Carpathian northern Tethys margin are assigned to the genus Leviathania. The genus is distributed from Spain to the Caucasus. Some species formed dense populations in the wide-spread, highly productive lagoonal environments situated on the carbonate platforms of Ernstbrunn (Austria), Mikulov, Štramberk (both Czech Republic), and Nyzhniv (Ukraine). The conspicuous morphology, comprising very large shells with strongly angulated whorls and especially the phaneromphalous umbilicus exclude the traditional attributions of this genus to the families Purpurinidae and Purpuroideidae. Therefore, we establish the new family Leviathaniidae for the type genus Leviathania. The family comprises the largest pre-Cenozoic gastropods, represented by a yet unnamed gigantic Leviathania species from the latest Tithonian or early Berriasian of Ukraine. The gastropods are tentatively assumed to have fed omnivorous, i.e., on a mixed detrital-algal diet, based on comparable population densities as the large modern queen conch Lobatus gigas from the Caribbean Sea. (2018). On the Work of the Piarist Order in South Moravia in the 19th Century. Czech-Polish Historical and Pedagogical Journal, 10/1, 44–64. https://doi.org/10.5817/cphpj-2018-005 This paper1 aims to give an account of the work of the Piarist Order in South Moravia in the 19th century. Attention is devoted principally to education which was (and remains) the fundamental area of interest to the Piarist Order. The Piarists operated in Mikulov, Strážnice, Hustopeče and Kyjov in South Moravia in the 19th century. They also worked for a certain time at the Episcopal Philosophical Institute in Brno. This paper shows the diversity of the activities of the order in the first half of the 19th century and its subsequent decline in the second half of the century. The causes of this decline are summarised. Key words: Piarists; education; Mikulov; Strážnice; Hustopeče; Kyjov; Brno The most important literature on the Piarist Order in the Czech Lands is the publication The Piarists in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia by the authors Zemek, Bombera and Filip.2 This is an immensely valuable work for the history of the order. No great attention is, however, paid here to the 19th century. The history of the Piarist Monastery in Strážnice in the 19th century is mentioned in a number of small works.

In case yes, to what extent and under what conditions. Three districts in the South-Moravian Region, Znojmo, Bˇreclav, and Hodonín, situated in the rural borderland with Austria and Slovakia represented the study area. Both geographical and sociological methods were used to gather evidence for cultural tourism in that study. Firstly, attractiveness analysis of the area defined for cultural tourism took place. Next, factors influencing the potential for cultural tourism affecting rural development in South Moravia were evaluated. Finally, synergistic relations were discussed. In the territory, many forms of tourism intersect. Based on the results, it can be stated that cultural tourism can hardly be the main driver of rural development after the decline of agriculture because the region’s economy has branched out in several directions. However, it can be an important complementary activity that yields both economic and non-economic benefits.

Our PBC played an active part in this initiative and contributed to raising awareness by releasing an interesting set of six documentaries on a single DVD called “Man, Landscape, Forests...” as well as organizing a number of presentations and lectures. A project of extensive restoration of the Lednice chateau Riding Hall, under which an educational centre will be established on the premises, was launched in 2011. The main exhibition will focus on the Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape (LVCL), World Heritage Site, and two additional exhibitions will present the Lower Morava BR and the INTRODUCTION MAB Programme respectively. Our PBC participates in the project as a partner and as such prepared expert documents required in the process of selecting the exhibition contractor. An updated version of the LVCL Manage- ment Plan was also released in 2011. Later in the year, a fourth year of the traditional “Cultural Landscape Manage- ment” workshop took place.
