2019 School Accountability Report Card Mountain View Middle School School Accountability Report Card Reported Using Data from the 2018-19 School Year Published During 2019-20 By February 1 of each year, every school in California is required by state law to publish a School Accountability Report Card (SARC). The SARC contains information about the condition and performance of each California public school. Under the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) all local educational agencies (LEAs) are required to prepare a Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP), which describes how they intend to meet annual school-specific goals for all pupils, with specific activities to address state and local priorities. MVMS Instructional Focus Statement Students will be able to build upon, clarify, and question the reasoning of others using supportive evidence in a collaborative setting. Listening, speaking, reading and writing will be integrated into every content area daily. Mountain View Middle School is one of two middle schools in the Beaumont Unified School District. The current facility consists of twenty acres and opened in August of 2002. Mountain View currently has an enrollment of 1128 students in grades six through eight. There are 45 certificated teachers. Mountain View has three full-time counselors and three administrators. There are 24 classified staff that range from 1 to 8 hours per day. Our overarching goal is to prepare students to take the opportunities and overcome the challenges they will encounter throughout their life in order to have a happy, healthy and productive future. We seek to create real-world learning opportunities through highly rigorous academic and career oriented courses and provide support structures to ensure EVERY student has the necessary skills, knowledge and motivation to be successful. AVID, Career Technical Education (CTE) classes, and exploratory wheels provide students with dynamic learning opportunities that promote future ready students. We want to maximize the opportunities students have in high school and beyond. Mountain View has a growing AVID program that works to prepare students for college and career pathways. In addition to a number of AVID elective class offerings, AVID strategies are being used in classrooms school wide to promote student learning. Our CTE programs include multiple offerings of Project Lead the Way courses including Introduction to Medicine, Medical Detectives, Green Architecture, and Introduction to Design and Modeling in addition to Lego Robotics. 6th grade students take part in an exploratory wheel that includes Intro to Music, Career Exploration, Leadership and SeaPerch (building submersible robots). The 7th grade exploratory wheel includes Lego Robotics 1, Intro to Medicine, Theater Arts and Design and Modeling. We also have a dynamic visual and performing arts programs with Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Band, Choir and two levels of Theater Arts. In an effort to meet the individualized needs of all students, we developed "Encore" and have worked to evolve its individualized approaches since its creation in 2014. Encore provides opportunities for social/emotional learning, academic intervention, and college/career skill building within the confines of the school day. It encourages flexibility, data analysis, and collaboration between teachers with a focus on meeting the dynamic needs of all students. Mountain View was recognized by the Riverside County Office of Education as a 2016 Model of Excellence award recipient for our Encore program. Mountain View Middle School, in cooperation with parents and the community, provides a safe and caring learning environment which will challenge and encourage the intellectual, physical, emotional and social capabilities of each student. In an effort to do so, the stakeholders at Mountain View have established three primary goals: 2018-19 School Accountability Report Card for Mountain View Middle School Page 2 of 13 1. Mountain View Middle School will ensure a positive climate and school culture for students by providing opportunities for them to build positive relationships and to access resources from Beaumont and the larger community while teaching the skills to be successful in college and career pathways. 2. Mountain View Middle School will implement the California State Standards through a rigorous curriculum in all core content areas in an effort to increase: student achievement on all standardized tests including CAASPP, the number of students who are college and career ready, and the reclassification rate for English learners. Dynamic learning opportunities will be used to increase student engagement and support the individual needs of all students. 3. Mountain View Middle School will create a safe, welcoming, supportive and engaging teaching, learning and working environment for all stakeholders; students, parents, staff and the Beaumont community at-large. MVMS will provide dynamic learning opportunities for all stakeholders, collaborate with the District to maintain and improve facilities, implement an instructional program to support 21st century learning skills, and work to address the social-emotional needs of our students.     Kirstie Fryirs Faculty of Science and Engineering Email: [email protected] Phone: +61 2 9850 8367 Biography Kirstie's work focuses on fluvial geomorphology and river management. Her research focusses on how rivers work, how they have evolved, how they have been impacted by anthropogenic disturbance, how catchment sediment budgets and (dis)connectivity work, and how to best use geomorphology in river management practice. She is probably best known as the co-developer of the River Styles Framework and portfolio of professional development short courses (see www.riverstyles.com). The River Styles Framework is a geomorphic approach for the analysis of rivers that includes assessment of river type and behaviour, physical condition and recovery potential. These analyses are used to develop prioritisation and decision support systems in river management practice. Uptake of the River Styles Framework has now occurred in many places on six continents. Kirstie has strong domestic and international collaborations in both academia and industry. She has worked for many years on various river science and management projects as part of multi-disciplinary, collaborative teams that include ecologists, hydrologists, social scientists, practitioners and citizens. Kirstie has also been lucky enough to work in Antarctica for two summer seasons, undertaking research on heavy metal contamination at Casey and Wilkes stations. Kirstie has co-written and co-edited three books titled "Geomorphology and River Management" (Blackwell, 2005), "River Futures" (Island Press, 2008) and "Geomorphic Analysis of River Systems: An Approach to Reading the Landscape" (Wiley, 2013). She holds several research, teaching and postgraduate supervision awards including the international Gordon Warwick medal for excellence in research.

Your Health vs. My Liberty: Philosophical beliefs dominated reflection and identifiable victim effects when predicting public health recommendation compliance during the COVID-19 pandemic Abstract In response to crises, people sometimes prioritize fewer specific identifiable victims over many unspecified statistical victims. How other factors can explain this bias remains unclear. So two experiments investigated how complying with public health recommendations during the COVID19 pandemic depended on victim portrayal, reflection, and philosophical beliefs (Total N = 998). Only one experiment found that messaging about individual victims increased compliance compared to messaging about statistical victims—i.e., "flatten the curve" graphs— an effect that was undetected after controlling for other factors. However, messaging about flu (vs. COVID19) indirectly reduced compliance by reducing perceived threat of the pandemic. Nevertheless, moral beliefs predicted compliance better than messaging and reflection in both experiments.
