The Transportation Museum has preserved the mule car and this project served to compile the history of the car and show how it related to changes in public transportation in Indianapolis. The Urban Frontier in Pioneer Indiana ROBERT G. BARROWS AND LEIGH DARBEE ne of the central themes of Richard Wade’s The Urban Frontier— Othat the “growth of urbanism was an important part of the occupa- tion of the West”—has been reflected in Indiana historiography only occasionally. Donald F. Carmony’s examination of the state from 1816 to mid-century is definitive on constitutional, financial, political, and transportation topics, but is much less informative concerning social and urban history; indeed, Wade’s book does not appear in Carmony’s bibliography. In his one-volume history of the state, The Indiana Way, James H. Madison echoes Wade when he writes: “Towns were an essen- tial part of frontier development . providing essential services to the rural and agricultural majority of Indiana’s population.”1 When one con- siders the history of cities and towns in pioneer Indiana in relation to Wade’s classic work, a “generation gap” becomes readily apparent. Developments in Indiana (and, notably, in Indianapolis, the closest comparison to the cities Wade examined) run two or three decades behind his discussion of urbanism in the Ohio Valley. His father moved the family to Centerville, Indiana in 1834 where Sarah died shortly thereafter. Thomas’ occupations included serving as tavern keeper, Collector of State/County Revenue, Sheriff, and Clerk of Court. Lazarus attended elementary school at Whitewater Seminary and became a Notary Public for Wayne County and Centerville at the age of 17. After going into a dry goods business with his father, he went into Real Estate with a good friend, Oliver Perry Morton (future Governor of Indiana). On 6 June, 1850, at the age of 27, he married Catherine Judah, aged 18, the oldest child of Samuel Judah, a Vincennes attorney, and his wife, Harriet. After their marriage, Lazarus and Catherine lived in Centerville.

The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation Timeline 1873 The Indianapolis Public Library has benefited from philanthropy since day one, opening with a core collection of 3,600 books gifted by the Indianapolis Library Association. Indianapolis residents continued to donate materials and artworks. Some individuals made unsolicited financial gifts, mainly in memory of loved ones. 1909 Library Director Eliza Browning secured a $120,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie to build six branch libraries, two of which remain in operation as library buildings today (East Washington and Spades Park). 1956 Harold Sander became Library Director, bringing with him the hope of establishing a library foundation similar to the one supporting the Roanoke Public Library, where he had been Director. 1968 The Indianapolis Public Library separated from Indianapolis Public Schools, paving the way for Harold Sander to establish the Library Foundation. 1969 The Library Foundation was incorporated. 1972 Ray Gnat became Library Director, assuming responsibility for the Library Foundation. 1972 The Library established a book sale benefiting the Library Foundation at the Nora Branch. In 1980, the Southport Branch also became a site. The book sales moved to the “old” Broad Ripple Branch Library in 1986 and then to the Library Services Center in 1993. Since inception, the book sale has raised over $7.5 million. 1973 The Library Foundation celebrated the Library’s 100th anniversary by publishing Indianapolis in the World of Books. It included the 1868 Thanksgiving Day sermon by Reverend Hanford A. Edson calling for the creation of a public library. 1 1976 The Library Foundation received a grant from the State of Indiana to reprint Jacob Dunn’s 1910 history of Indianapolis, Greater Indianapolis, and distribute it to all public libraries, school libraries and educational institutions in Marion County.

IT WOULD MAKE A BEAUTIFUL CITY By James A. Glass Indianapolis Literary Club Ladies’ Night May 7, 2018 Indiana when it became a state in December, 1816 was, for the most part, covered with a vast hardwood forest, punctuated by occasional meadows. The indigenous peoples—Miamis, Potawatomis, Delaware, Shawnees, Weas, and others—inhabited villages located mostly on rivers or streams and traversed the state on trails or traces. White settlers had created towns and started farms in the southern, eastern, and western edges of the state, mostly along the Ohio, Wabash, and Whitewater Rivers. Most of the northern two-thirds of the new state were owned by the indigenous, or Indian tribes (Figure 1). Indiana--the name chosen for the previous territory and now for the state—came from the indigenous tribes who then defined the identity of the area. There were slightly more than 60,000 white inhabitants, just enough to meet the minimum number established by Congress for statehood.1 Figure 1: Indiana in 1817. From several sources we have attempted to weave a new, but connected pattern of how AA was started here in Indianapolis and identify the crucial people who constitute the threads. To quote a description of the man who founded AA in Indpls. “… the boy who put AA on the Indiana map. I have always considered him the number 3 man in A.A., a statement I can boldly make after having been closely associated with Dr. Bob and Bill W. And there are others who think the same as I “ Later is included the letter from Dean B in its entirety. Who was this spectacular man who had such an affect on our lives? No doubt AA would have found its way to Indianapolis. But the Historical evidence seems to indicate this is how AA actually came together in Indianapolis. Who was this man? His name was Doherty S. Other names that you will hear are “J.D’. JD was J.D. H. He was AA # 8 and lived in Akron, Ohio. His wife was from Evansville originally, and they relocated to Evansville where her family was still residing as this story unfolds. Another essential man in this unfolding episode is Irving M. from Cleveland. Also in Cleveland was Clarence S, the “Home Brewmeister “in the Big Book. He was the dynamo who pioneered the printed word – pamphlets, advertisements and newspaper articles. In Clarence S’s train of ‘pigeons’ or sponsees was Irving Myerson. In fact, he introduced himself to Dohr S as “I am from Cleveland and I’ve come here to help you get to work.
