Photo: Steve Tanner WELCOME 2016 – a momentous year – in which the world celebrated the richness of Shakespeare’s legacy 400 years after his death. Shakespeare’s Globe is proud to have played a part in those celebrations in 197 countries and led the festivities in London, where Shakespeare wrote and worked. Our Globe to Globe Hamlet tour travelled 193,000 miles before coming home for a final emotional performance in the Globe to mark the end, not just of this phenomenal worldwide journey, but the artistic handover from Dominic Dromgoole to Emma Rice. A memorable season of late Shakespeare plays in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse and two outstanding Globe transfers in the West End ran concurrently with the last leg of the Globe to Globe Hamlet tour. On Shakespeare’s birthday, 23 April, we welcomed President Obama to the Globe. Actors performed scenes from the late plays running in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Southwark Cathedral, a service which was the only major civic event to mark the anniversary in London and was attended by our Patron, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh.

As the play drew to its expected closure of heterosexual coupling, the additional lack of any sense of challenge to the conservative values of the upper classes (social interrogation that this production consistently avoided) was most evident: Orsino came to the final scene wearing a casual beige pinstripe suit and white leather shoes. Olivia matched him, tonally, in a spotless white jacket. The production thus chose sartorially to confirm that this very posh Illyria was a place in which nothing could be contaminated by dirt or malice. Yet despite its deft cleanliness and some very competent acting, the production left me cold. In a review of December 12th 2008, Daily Telegraph critic Charles Spencer claimed that: “the Donmar has produced a Night close to per- fection.” Quite so, but I for one did not want the near-perfect Romantic Comedy it offered; not least because this play at its best should show au- diences quite clearly that the world is a place not only of love, but also of misunderstanding, manipulation, and misery; a place in which fathers and brothers are lost, in which normative social order crushes individuality, and in which personal histories can and do transpire as blanks.

Abstract This thesis attempts to outline the practical relationship between Irish playwrights and the Abbey Theatre, from the early work of the Irish Literary Theatre in 1899, until the present day. It argues that the Abbey's reputation for being a writer's theatre tends to be contradicted by its distant association with Irish playwrights during the greater part of its history. Only during the early 1980swas there an active attempt to integrate the playwright within the company, creating a vibrant and active community for the development of new writing. Up until the 1980s the Abbey subscribedto the establishedtwentieth- century view that the playwright was a literary writer, outside the creative centre of theatre.
