Coleoptera and Lepidoptera (Insecta) Diversity in the Central Part of Sredna Gora Mountains (Bulgaria)
BULLETIN OF THE ENTOMOLOGICALENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF MALTAMALTA (2019) Vol. 10 : 75–95 DOI: 10.17387/BULLENTSOCMALTA.2019.09 Coleoptera and Lepidoptera (Insecta) diversity in the central part of Sredna Gora Mountains (Bulgaria) Rumyana KOSTOVA1*, Rostislav BEKCHIEV2 & Stoyan BESHKOV2 ABSTRACT.ABSTRACT. Despite the proximity of Sredna Gora Mountains to Sofia, the insect assemblages of this region are poorly studied. As a result of two studies carried out as a part of an Environmental Impact Assessment in the Natura 2000 Protected Areas: Sredna Gora and Popintsi, a rich diversity of insects was discovered, with 107 saproxylic and epigeobiont Coleoptera species and 355 Lepidoptera species recorded. This research was conducted during a short one-season field study in the surrounding areas of the town of Panagyurishte and Oborishte Village. Special attention was paid to protected species and their conservation status. Of the Coleoptera recorded, 22 species were of conservation significance. Forty-five Lepidoptera species of conservation importance were also recorded. KEY WORDS.WORDS. Our hosts: Melanie and Peter Rich at Casa Sarasa www.casasarasa.com Photos by Chris Gibson (CG), Helen Crowder (HC) and Peter Crook (PC), all taken during this holiday. At the end of this report there are photos of some of the non-British moths seen during the week. Front cover: enjoying Aisa valley (CG). Below: eating outside on the last evening (CG) and the green pastures of the upper Hecho valley (HC). This holiday, as for every Honeyguide holiday, also puts something into conservation in our host country by way of a contribution to the wildlife that we enjoyed, in this case for La Sociedad Española de Ornitología (SEO), the Spanish Ornithological Society, and its work in Aragón. The conservation contribution this year of £40 per person was supplemented by gift aid through the Honeyguide Wildlife Charitable Trust, leading to a total of £440 This donation brings the total given to SEO since the first Honeyguide holiday in Spain in 1991 to £16,745 (through all Honeyguide holidays, mostly the Spanish Pyrenees and Extremadura). As at July 2016, the total for all conservation contributions through Honeyguide since 1991 was £108,716. 2 DAILY DIARY Wednesday 15 June: The way there… What should have been a simple journey, Stansted to Biarritz then minibus to Berdún, had by 8pm turned out rather differently. After a series of delays due to thundery weather our flight eventually got onto French tarmac an hour late, where we were held on the plane because of the heavy rain, although any benefit from that was soon negated when we had to wait outside, in the continuing deluge, while another plane took off. -
Nuovi Dati Sulla Macrolepidotterofauna Dell'italia
Entomologica, Bari, 39 (2005): 183-209 PAOLO PARENZAN1 - LUIGI SANNINO2 - STEFANO SCALERCIO3 - ANDREA SCIARRETTA4 Nuovi dati sulla Macrolepidotterofauna dell’Italia meridionale (Lepidoptera)* ABSTRACT NEW RECORDS ON THE MACROLEPIDOPTERA OF SOUTHERN ITALY (LEPIDOPTERA) In this paper 135 species have been recognised. Seven species (Dahlica triquetrella (Hübner, 1813), Xanthorhoe designata (Hufnagel, 1767), Eupithecia inturbata (Hübner, 1817), Plusia festucae (Linnaeus, 1758), Calamia tridens (Hufnagel, 1766), Polymixis polymita (Linnaeus, 1761), Agrotis syricola Berio, 1936) are new for Southern Italy, 15 taxa were the first time recorded in Puglia, 87 in Campania, 10 in Basilicata and 20 in Calabria. The great amount of faunistic news underlines the high species richness of Southern Italy, a large amount of which is to date unknown. Key Words: Macrolepidoptera, faunistic reports, Southern Italy. Scalercio & S. Greco Abstract In this paper we described the Heterocera fauna of the Calabrian black pine forest in the Sila Massif, southern Italy. We sampled 15 stands at 1270-1446 meters of altitude. One UV-Led light traps per stand was turned on once per month from May to November 2015 and from April to November 2016. We collected 18,827 individuals belonging to 367 species. Thaumetopoea pityocampa (Notodontidae) and Alcis repandata (Geometridae) were the most abundant species. Conifers are the main larval foodplant of 11 species and 4,984 individuals. Particularly interesting was the presence of Eupithecia indigata, discovered in Italy outside the Alps few years ago, abundant in pure Calabrian black pine stands. Also, the recently described Italian endemic Hylaea mediterranea was abundant, and together with E. -

Abstract [Remarks on the findings of Philereme transversata (Hfn.), Polymixis polymita (L.), Spoladea recurvalis (F.) and Cydalima perspectalis (Walk.) in Romagna] The authors report some records in 2011 and 2013 of three moths new to Romagna territory: the geometrid Philereme transversata (Hufnagel, 1767), the noctuid Polymixis (Polymixis) polymita (Linnaeus, 1761) and the crambid Spoladea (=Hymenia) recurvalis (Fabricius, 1775), a migrant species very dangerous to many tropical crops, new for the Emilia-Romagna region, being also the first record north of Apennines. -
The Lepidoptera of Bucharest and Its Surroundings (Romania)
Travaux du Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle © 30 Décembre Vol. LIV (2) pp. 461–512 «Grigore Antipa» 2011 DOI: 10.2478/v10191-011-0028-9 THE LEPIDOPTERA OF BUCHAREST AND ITS SURROUNDINGS (ROMANIA) LEVENTE SZÉKELY Abstract. This study presents a synthesis of the current knowledge regarding the Lepidoptera fauna of Bucharest and the surrounding areas within a distance up to 50 kilometers around the Romanian capital. Data about the fauna composition are presented: the results of the research work beginning with the end of the 19th century, as well the results of the research work carried out in the last 15 years. The research initiated and done by the author himself, led to the identification of 180 species which were unknown in the past. Even if the natural habitats from this region have undergone through radical changes in the 20th century, the area still preserves a quite rich and interesting Lepidoptera fauna. The forests provide shelter to rich populations of the hawk moth Dolbina elegans A. Bang-Haas, 1912, one of the rarest Sphingidae in Europe, and some other species with high faunistical and zoogeographical value as: Noctua haywardi (Tams, 1926) (it is new record for the Romanian fauna from this area), Catocala dilecta (Hübner, 1808), Tarachidia candefacta (Hübner, [1831]), Chrysodeixis chalcites (Esper, [1789]), Aedia leucomelas (Linnaeus, 1758), and Hecatera cappa (Hübner, [1809]). We also present and discuss the current status of the protected Lepidoptera species from the surroundings of the Romanian capital for the first time. Résumé. Ce travail représente une synthèse des connaissances actuelles concernant la faune de lépidoptères de Bucarest et de ses zones limitrophes sur un rayon de 50 km autour de la capitale de la Roumanie.
