Abstract A checklist of shallow (to 60 m depth) reef fishes is provided for the Bird’s Head Peninsula region of West Papua, Indonesia. The area, which occupies the extreme western end of New Guinea, contains the world’s most diverse assemblage of coral reef fishes. The current checklist, which includes both historical records and recent survey results, includes 1,511 species in 451 genera and 111 families. Respective species totals for the three main coral reef areas – Raja Ampat Islands, Fakfak-Kaimana coast, and Cenderawasih Bay – are 1320, 995, and 877. In addition to its extraordinary species diversity, the region exhibits a remarkable level of endemism considering its relatively small area. A total of 26 species in 14 families are currently considered to be confined to the region. There are totally 361 recorded species of gobioid fishes belonging to 113 genera, 5 subfamilies, and 9 families. This gobioid fauna of China comprises 16.2% of 2211 known living gobioid species of the world. This report repre- sents a summary of previous researches on the suborder Gobioidei. A recently diagnosed subfamily, Polyspondylogobiinae, were assigned from the type genus and type species: Polyspondylogobius sinen- sis Kimura & Wu, 1994 which collected around the Pearl River Delta with high extremity of vertebral count up to 52-54. The undated comprehensive checklist of gobioid fishes in China will be provided in this paper. Ecosystems goods and services from mangrove forests are especially vital to coastal communities. Yet mangrove areas continue to be deforested at unprecedented rates. Using gobioid fishes associated with mangrove forests as focal organisms, we assessed their diversity in 14 selected sites within the Lesser Sunda group of islands. We applied Correspondence analysis to determine the relationships between ecosystems based on the occurrence of these fishes and complementarity analysis to identify the minimum number of sites to conserve maximum diversity based on a rarity algorithm. We recovered 55 gobioid fish species at these mangrove areas, and proposed six mangrove areas within the Lesser Sunda group of islands as areas of conservation priority: Loh Sebita, Oebelo, Bipolo, Lembar Bay, Selindungan, and Kawangu. -

LARSON (2) Abstract. – The species of Schismatogobius from Papua New Guinea to Samoa are reviewed and compared to the three known species described from the area. Eleven species are recognized including seven new species. These are described using genetic and morphomeristic approaches. The species differ by a high percentage of divergence in partial COI gene (636 bp) and by several characters including the number of pectoral fin rays, the pattern of the ventral surface of the head in males and/or females, the pectoral fin colour pattern, the jaw length/ head length ratio or the jaw length of male and/or female, and the fin lengths. -

The first list was published in 1915, but the major inventories were done between 1998 and 2003. These inventories allowed the discovery of many new species and the publica- tion, in 2003, of the Atlas of Freshwater fish and crustaceans of New Caledonia, which listed 64 freshwater fish species. Between 2004 and 2010, additional specific surveys were conducted by the MNHN and 9 species were added. Among them, 3 were new for science. Gobiidae family represents 30% of the freshwater fishes of New Caledonia. This high percentage is explained by their particular life cycle adapted to insular systems. RÉSUMÉ Nouvelles données sur les poissons d’eau douce de Nouvelle-Calédonie. La faune ichtyologique des eaux douces a été étudiée à diverses reprises et à divers degrés en Nouvelle-Calédonie depuis 1861. La pre- mière liste des espèces a été établie en 1915, mais c’est entre 1998 et 2003 qu’ont été entrepris les plus gros efforts d’inventaires. Ceux-ci ont donné naissance à la description de plusieurs espèces nouvelles ainsi qu’à la publication, en 2003, de « l’Atlas des poissons et crus- tacés d’eau douce de Nouvelle-Calédonie », qui comprenait 64 espèces de poissons. De nouveaux inventaires menés entre 2004 et 2010 par le MNHN ont porté le nombre d’espèces à 73. -

Sulawesi is the largest island of the Wallacea. Here, we present an annotated checklist of fish species record- ed in Sulawesi’s inland waters. We recognize a total of 226 species from 112 genera and 56 families. Gobiidae (41 species), Adrianichthyidae (20 species) and Telmatherinidae (19 species) are most species-rich, making up a total of 43% of the total species diversity. 65 species are endemic to Sulawesi’s freshwaters, including 19 Tematherinidae, 17 Adrianichthyi- dae, and 17 Zenarchopteridae. 44% of the inland fish fauna are obligate freshwater fishes, followed by euryhaline (38%) and amphi-, ana- or diadromous (29%) taxa. 65 species have been recorded from lacustrine environments. However, we stress that the data available are not representative for the island’s freshwater habitats. The fish species diversity of the spectacular lakes is largely explored, but the riverine ichthyofaunas are in clear need of further systematic exploration. -

The ichthyofauna of the Phu Quoc Island (Vietnam), situated in the Gulf of Thailand in the prox- imity of the coastline of Cambodia, has not been sufficiently studied. The isolation of the island combined with the knowledge on its geologica l history could yield conclusions on the evolutionary trends and speculations on how individual faunistic groups were formed. The aims of this study were to investigate the recent ichthyofauna of the Phu Quoc Island and to analyze the major evolutionary trends in its history by a comparison with recent faunas of the neighbouring mainland. Materials and methods. A total of about 4000 fishes representing 97 different teleostean species were collect- ed at 46 sampled sites in the Phu Quoc Island from 6 December 2011 to 12 January 2012 by using different kinds of sampling equipment and collection methods as well as through exploring different habitats. -
