Değerli hocalarımızın canlı anlatımlarına rağmen, o yıllarda bizler için pek bir şey ifade etmediklerinden dersliklerin boşluklarında soyutça uçuşan bu adları, yazgının rüzgarıyla çok geçmeden somutlaştırma ayrıcalığına erişeceğim pek aklımdan geçmiyordu. Sanırım on bir yüzyıllık yazılı Bulgar edebiyatının İstanbul macerasını araştırma tasarımın kökleri o yıllara kadar uzanır. Aslında bu, bizleri ilgilendiren bileşik ve kapsamlı sorunsalın sadece bir yüzünü oluşturuyordu – ayna yöntemini uygulayarak, bir dünya şehri olan İstanbul’un da Bulgar edebiyatı sayfalarında yansımasını görmek gerekirdi. ‘’Bulgar Edebiyatı İstanbul’da – İstanbul Bulgar Edebiyatında’’ konulu doktora tezi çalışmamızın her aşamasında yakın ilgi ve desteklerini esirgemeyen Anabilim Dalı Başkanlarım Prof. Dr. Leman Ergenç, Prof. Dr. Altan Aykut, Yard. We both have visited Bulgaria many times, we have had many personal friends among its scholars and statesmen, and we feel a deep sympathy for the tragic plight of this long-suffering Slavic nation with its industrious and hard-working people. We both feel also that it is an injustice to Bulgaria and a loss to American Slavic scholarship that, in spite of the importance of Bulgaria for the Slavic world, so little attention is paid to the country's cultural contributions. This is the more deplorable for American influence in Bulgaria was great, even before World War I. Many Bulgarians were educated in Robert Col- lege in Constantinople and after World War I in the American College in Sofia, one of the institutions supported by the Near East Foundation. Many Bulgarian professors have visited the United States in happier times. So it seems unfair that Ameri- cans and American universities have ignored so completely the development of the Bulgarian genius and culture during the past century.

Bulgaria Abstract: This article aims at presenting the major developments of modern Bulgarian education during the 19th and early 20th centuries. It relies on statistical and other primary sources, and on secondary materials, and uses both quantitative and qualitative methods. The first part follows the development of the educational movement among Bulgarians, stimulated by the modernizing Tanzimat reforms (1839-1876) of the Ottoman Empire; the second part – tells the story of the state supported education after the establishment of the Bulgarian nation-state in 1878 up until 1944 when the communist came into power. The article pays special attention to the differences in women’s and men’s education and the gradual move towards greater gender equality in education during the second half of the 20th century.     STEPSTEP FORFOR BULGARIABULGARIA SUMMERSUMMER ACADEMYACADEMY 20102010 ProgramProgram ReportReport Aug 22 – Sept 04, 2010 A Step for Bulgaria Foundation Initiative 1 The Step for Bulgaria Summer Academy took place for the fourth consecutive year between 21st August and 4th Septemeber 2010, at the Hotel Rusalka near Varna. Forty-one students from Sofia, Plovdiv, Gabrovo, Berkovitsa and Silistra were selected to participate in the programme, delivered by more than twenty volunteers from Bulgaria, Norway, the USA, Poland and the UK. The Step for Bulgaria Summer Academy aimed to train underprivileged students in essential professional skills through providing instruction in English and computer literacy, and fostering entrepreneurship capabilities through business projects designed to test leadership, creative and teamwork skills. The programme was supplemented by a series of sessions designed to provide skills for independent life and healthy-living, as well as recreational and cultural activities making the most of the beautiful setting on the Black Sea coast. English Classes The students were split into five streams for English classes so that the material could be tailored to individual needs. Each group was under the direction of a native English speaker and two or three Bulgarian volunteers, who provided two and a half hours of classes per day. The classes covered an impressive range of topics, from personal descriptions and everyday conversational language, sports, parts of the body, travel, animals and job applications and interviews, amongst many others. Vocabulary was largely delivered through a combination of pictures, sign language and group participation in games, and grammar and sentence structure was utilised through a combination of verbal and written communication with the teachers.
