Phased out at the end of 2015 Tourism VCA Ethiopia – Final Report – September 2018 5 Tourism VCA Ethiopia – Final Report – September 2018 6 Introduction The purpose of this VCA is to map out current European tourism to Ethiopia, to describe the range of products offered in Ethiopian tourism, current and planned, and to identify opportunities for developing European tourism, including which interventions are needed in order to do so and, specifically, which interventions CBI could include in a project. A Business Case Idea (BCI) was submitted in November 2017 which showed that the tourism sector in Ethiopia has the potential to attract more international tourism, in particular European visitors, who represent about a third of the total demand. The BCI also identified the main gaps and challenges in the value chain to achieve further development and efficiency, as well as some areas in which the CBI could help to address the challenges. According to the procedures for project preparation, a Preliminary Desk Research Report was produced in July 2018 with a compilation of excerpts from different published and non-published documents. This showed that a significant amount of relevant information is available, and that there is a need to: Obtain updated statistics about international visitors and tourism companies Get information regarding the current state of governance of the tourism sector Assess the current status of the Ecotourism Association and Ethiopian Sustainable Tourism Alliance (ESTA) mentioned in the BCI Identify challenges and gaps in marketing and commercialisation in the European markets Find out about sustainable practices and certification among tourism service suppliers Identify projects financed by donors supporting the tourism value chain Make recommendations regarding the type of activities that could be financed by a CBI project To complement the information available through secondary sources, a field trip took place

In Ethiopia, the development of modern tourism as an important economic sector can be traced back to the imperial regime. This was when the Ethiopian Tourist Organization (ETO) was founded in 1961. From then until the overthrow of the regime in 1974, the development of tourism showed a remarkable and smooth upward trend, as measured by the arrival of tourists. However, shortly after the military government assumed power in 1974, the growth of tourism was subject to adverse political and socioeconomic crises. The sector experienced a downward trend, with the number of annual tourist visits steadily decreasing from 50,220 to 28,984 at the national level. However, the seizure of power by a new government in 1991 brought about an environment relatively conducive to the growth of tourism with the adoption of a free market, relative stability, and infrastructure devel- opment. This paper sheds light on the history of tourism and its challenges in the context of the political, economic, and ideological shifts through three consecutive political regimes in Ethiopia: the imperial, Derg, and EPRDF. Information was collected from primary sources through interviews and focus group discussions with tourists, experts, hotel managers, and tour guides. Published and unpublished government reports were also consulted.

By probing deeper into the surface, microwave radiometers may also be sensitive to older flows and thus amenable for investigations where repeat observations are infrequent. In this investigation we explore the feasibility of this tactic using data from the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission in three case studies: the 2018 Kilauea eruption, the 2018 Oct-Nov eruption at Fuego, and the ongoing activity at Erta Ale in Ethiopia. We find that despite SMAP’s superior spatial resolution, observing flows that are small fractions of the observing footprint are difficult to detect—even in resampled data products. Furthermore, the absorptivity of the flow, which can be temperature dependent, can limit the depths to which SMAP is sensitive. We thus demonstrate that the lower limit of detectability at L-band (1.41 GHz) is in practice higher than expected from first principles. Keywords: volcanoes, SMAP, microwave radiometry 1.   • Plate‐Boundary Kinematics of the Afrera Linkage Zone (Afar) From
    magmatic segments, show creep and some stick-slip behavior (with cumulative LOS displacement up to ~30-40 mm over a ~5 years period) accompanied by low-level seismicity. Some of the creeping faults are also spatially associated with hydrothermal springs. We interpret that the temporal behavior of the faults in the linkage zone is controlled by the interplay between tectonic extension, high heat flows and fluid circulation near the magmatic segments where creeping of some faults is favored. Plain Language Summary The exterior of the Earth is teared apart along mid-ocean ridges where magma rises and new oceanic crust is created. Mid-ocean ridges have an unmissable zig-zag pattern because while some portions, called ridge segments, are being teared apart others, called offsets, slide past each other. However, how the Earth deforms in these offsets is today poorly understood. The Afar region is the perfect place to address this open question as it is one of the few pales where a mid-ocean ridge is emerged and the segment and offsets can be observed on-land. Article In this study we combine satellite and earthquakes measurements to film how the surface of the Earth moves in an offset. We show that the netw ork of fractures at the surface of an offset can move either with sudden motions generating major earthquakes or they can slip continuously over years and produce many smaller earthquakes. Our results provide one of the few direct observations of the different type of motion of the Earth in an offset of the mid-ocean ridge system.
