  • Colours in Nature Colours
Nature's Wonderful Colours Magdalena KonečnáMagdalena Sedláčková • Jana • Štěpánka Sekaninová Nature is teeming with incredible colours. But have you ever wondered how the colours green, yellow, pink or blue might taste or smell? What could they sound like? Or what would they feel like if you touched them? Nature’s colours are so wonderful ColoursIN NATURE and diverse they inspired people to use the names of plants, animals and minerals when labelling all the nuances. Join us on Magdalena Konečná • Jana Sedláčková • Štěpánka Sekaninová a journey to discover the twelve most well-known colours and their shades. You will learn that the colours and elements you find in nature are often closely connected. Will you be able to find all the links in each chapter? Last but not least, if you are an aspiring artist, take our course at the end of the book and you’ll be able to paint as exquisitely as nature itself does! COLOURS IN NATURE COLOURS albatrosmedia.eu b4u publishing Prelude Who painted the trees green? Well, Nature can do this and other magic. Nature abounds in colours of all shades. Long, long ago people began to name colours for plants, animals and minerals they saw them in, so as better to tell them apart. But as time passed, ever more plants, animals and minerals were discovered that reminded us of colours already named. So we started to use the names for shades we already knew to name these new natural elements. What are these names? Join us as we look at beautiful colour shades one by one – from snow white, through canary yellow, ruby red, forget-me-not blue and moss green to the blackest black, dark as the night sky.

Cover design by Jeff Belizaire ABOUT THIS BOOK Why does earlier Greek painting (Archaic/Classical) seem so clear and—deceptively— simple while the latest painting (Hellenistic/Graeco-Roman) is so much more complex but also familiar to us? Is there a single, coherent explanation that will cover this remarkable range? What can we recover from ancient documents and practices that can objectively be called “Greek color theory”? Present day historians of ancient art consistently conceive of color in terms of triads: red, yellow, blue or, less often, red, green, blue. This habitude derives ultimately from the color wheel invented by J.W. Goethe some two centuries ago. So familiar and useful is his system that it is only natural to judge the color orientation of the Greeks on its basis. To do so, however, assumes, consciously or not, that the color understanding of our age is the definitive paradigm for that subject.

  • Mountain Lion Identification and Methods of Determining Sex and Age
MOUNTAIN LION IDENTIFICATION AND METHODS OF DETERMINING SEX AND AGE Introduction South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (SDGFP) is responsible for managing wildlife and its habitat as well as providing outdoor-related recreation. Our public outreach programs promote appreciation, understanding, and stewardship of South Dakota’s wildlife. SDGFP is funded through hunting and fishing license sales. The purpose of this document is to provide information to anyone who wants to hunt mountain lions and for anyone interested in mountain lion ecology. This document presents information about mountain lion biology, physiology, and behavior; explains how to determine the gender of a mountain lion; and details some of South Dakota’s laws and regulations pertaining to mountain lion hunting. Mountain Lions in South Dakota Mountain lions are native to the Black Hills of South Dakota. Dispersals outside of the Black Hills have been documented; however, there has been no evidence of an established prairie population. Mountain lions are efficient predators that primarily prey on deer and other small mammals In South Dakota their natural predators include other lions, disease, vehicles and humans. South Dakota State University and SDGFP have studied in the past, and continue to study a wide range of topics related to mountain lions in the Black Hills including home range size, survival, dispersal, population size, prey selection, survey methods, hunting impacts, and disease. Results of these studies continue to guide management activities for mountain lions in South Dakota and can be found at http://gfp.sd.gov/wildlife/management/research-projects/default.aspx. South Dakota Mountain Lion Hunting Regulations 1) No person may harvest or attempt to harvest a mountain lion with a spotted coat (kitten) or any mountain lion accompanying another mountain lion 2) No person may release dogs (where allowed) on tracks indicating multiple mountain lions traveling together.

  • Texas Wildlife Identification Guide
TEXAS WILDLIFE IDENTIFICATION GUIDE A guide to game animals, game birds, furbearers and other wildlife of Texas. INTRODUCTION Texas game animals, game birds, furbearers and other wildlife are important for many reasons. They provide countless hours of viewing and recreational opportunities. They benefit the Texas economy through hunting and “nature tourism” such as birdwatching. Commercial businesses that provide birdseed, dry corn and native landscaping may be devoted solely to attracting many of the animals found in this book. Local hunting and trapping economies, guiding operations and hunting leases have prospered because of the abun- dance of these animals in Texas. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department benefits because of hunting license sales, but it uses these funds to research, manage and protect all wildlife populations – not just game animals. Game animals provide humans with cultural, social, aesthetic and spiritual pleasures found in wildlife art, taxidermy and historical artifacts. Conservation organiza- tions dedicated to individual species such as quail, turkey and deer, have funded thousands of wildlife projects throughout North America, demonstrating the mystique game animals have on people. Animals referenced in this pocket guide exist because their habitat exists in Texas. Habitat is food, cover, water and space, all suitably arranged. They are part of a vast food chain or web that includes thousands more species of wildlife such as the insects, non-game animals, fish and i rare/endangered species. Active management of wild landscapes is the primary means to continue having abundant populations of wildlife in Texas. Preservation of rare and endangered habitat is one way of saving some species of wildlife such as the migratory whooping crane that makes Texas its home in the winter.
