These articles will focus on providing FPRI’s readership with an inside view on how some of the most important countries in the Middle East are covering issues of importance to the American foreign policy community. Raz Zimmt is a Ph.D. candidate in the Graduate School of Historical Studies and a research fellow at the Center for Iranian Studies at Tel Aviv University. He is the editor of the weekly “Spotlight on Iran,” published by the Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center, www.terrorism-info.org.il/site/home/default.asp . On May 11, 2011 hardliner cleric, Ayatollah Mohammad-Taqi Mesbah-Yazdi, held a meeting with members of the conservative Islamic Coalition Party. Mesbah-Yazdi warned his audience against the strengthening of deviant religious thought in Iranian society. He claimed that it jeopardizes the concept of “the Guardianship of the Islamic jurist” ( Velayat-e Faqih ), upon which the Iranian regime has been based since the Islamic Revolution (1979). “If this current continues and one day we will see another Seyyed Ali Mohammad Bab 1...we should not be surprised.” 2 A few days later, Ayatollah Seyyed Mohammad Sa’idi, the Friday prayer leader in Qom, warned the “deviant currents” to stop their conspiracies or the people will annihilate them, as they did to [Abolhassan] Banisadr, 3 “the hypocrites” [a reference to Iranian opposition organization, the Mojahedin-e Khalq ] and “the leaders of the sedition” [a reference to the reformist opposition]. -

Jamaluddin, MA Lecturer at Faculty of Islamic Studies UISU Medan, Indonesia Abstract: There are two largest madhhab in the world: Sunni and Shi’a. Each of these schools has different opinion about the hadith which can be used as a proposition of law. This dissent sometimes creates dispute and anarchic actions that leads to disharmony relationship in Muslim themself. This study tries to find out the factors that lead this different opinion between Sunni and Shi’a in understanding the hadith. Sunni argues that the hadith sourced from all over the companions of the Prophet Muhammad can be used as a proposition of law if it is valid or ṣaḥīḥ. All the companions of the Prophet, according to the Sunnis, are fair. As for the Hadith or Sunnah used by Shi’a is an authentic hadith narrated only by Ahlu Bait. The example of contradictory problem between Sunnis and Shi’a is mutʻah marriage. According to Sunni, this can of married is forbidden while Shi’a allow it. Sunni and Shi’a in establishing a legal marriage such as mut’ah equally refer to the hadith of Muhammad SAW. To maintain and create harmony between Sunni and Shi’a, it must be there is a mutual respect and appreciation for opinions outside his madhhab as long as the guidance are Qur'an and the hadith. -

ﺑﺴﻢ ّاﷲ ّاﻟﺮﺣﻤﻦ ّاﻟﺮﺣﯿﻢ Shi’a Political Thought: The History and Evolution of Wilayat-al-Faqih Alleh Naqvi Honors Scholars Project Dr. Khalid Blankinship & Professor Sean Yom May 6 2020 Naqvi 1 dedicated to the sun behind the clouds “Allah strengthens whomever He wishes with His help. There is indeed a moral in that for those who have insight.” (3:13) Naqvi 2 Introduction In this paper, I argue that the modern day Wilayat-al-Faqih (guardianship of the jurist) in Iran is a replication of an old idea which gives legitimacy to the Iranian government. This research would then inform academics about the historical context of Iran’s political philosophy and how this doctrine is not a new phenomenon but rather a theory of governance and political philosophy found in the Safavid Empire (1502-1736 AD). This research is important because it points to how Iran seeks legitimacy through its Shia identity and history for better understanding the state. I will do this by describing the role of jurists in Safavid politics and how they informed government policies and legislation. My theoretical expectations for this project is to give an understanding of guardianship (wilayah) and the role of a jurist (marja) in Safavid politics and compare that to modern day interpretations of guardianship of the jurist post-1979 Iran. I also intend to analyze misconceptions about guardianship of the jurist (wilayatul faqih) as well as opposition to create a new way of thinking about Iranian politics. What are the roots of the Shi’a political theory of “leadership of the jurist” in Safavid Iran between the years 1550-1650AD and did scholars hold positions similar to that of the Supreme Leader in Iran now? Western political and theological discourse does not currently compare the Safavid political system and Wilayat-al-Faqih; instead, western discourse is strict in thinking that the 1979 Iranian Revolution is the first instance in history of Shi’a political thought and its Naqvi 3 implementation. -

Torbat January 20, 2012 "Information Clearing House" --- The Control over the oil-rich regions of the Middle East and North Africa is strategically very important for the US and its Western allies. To expand their domination over the oil-rich regions, the US and its allies are trying to destabilize the countries that are not under their control so that they can install new client regimes in their place. After the US - NATO success to control the oil-rich Libya, it appears that the next would be the oil-rich Iran. In recent years, Iran has significantly progressed in science and technology. The US and its allies are concerned that Iran’s progress will deter their imperial hegemony in the Persian Gulf region. To contain Iran, the US & its allies have used the Iranian nuclear program as a pretext to weaken Iran by imposing sanctions against it. In addition to the economic sanctions that have been in effect for some time, the US and its allies have recently confronted Iran in several other fronts, including covert operations, freezing assets, cutting ties with Iran’s Central Bank, threatening to attack Iran’s nuclear installations, trying to overthrow Iran’s ally President Bashar al-Assad in Syria, and media campaigns to foment a soft- coup. Here is how these actions have increased tensions between Iran and the West. The main purpose of this list is to disambiguate multiple spellings, to make note of spellings no longer in use for these concepts, to define the concept in one or two lines, to make it easy for one to find and pin down specific concepts, and to provide a guide to unique concepts of Islam all in one place. Separating concepts in Islam from concepts specific to Arab culture, or from the language itself, can be difficult. Many Arabic concepts have an Arabic secular meaning as well as an Islamic meaning. One example is the concept of dawah. Arabic, like all languages, contains words whose meanings differ across various contexts. The word Islam is itself a good example. Arabic is written in its own alphabet, with letters, symbols, and orthographic conventions that do not have exact equivalents in the Latin alphabet (see Arabic alphabet).
