Such a list may be of use to readers who desire to have further information on any of the topics discussed or alluded to in the text. It has been compiled by Messrs. R. & R. Clark's Press Reader from the references in my footnotes to the volumes, and it has been revised and corrected by me in proof. The titles of works which I have not seen but have cited at second hand are distinguished by an asterisk prefixed to them. Throughout the book I have endeavoured to indicate the distinction clearly by the manner of my citation, but lest any ambiguity should remain I have thought it well to mark the difference precisely in the Bibliography. In the case of Greek and Latin authors the editions which I have commonly used are generally noted in the Bibliography; they are for the most part those which I possess in my own library and have consulted for the sake of convenience. The General Index incorporates the separate indices to the volumes, but as some of these, especially in the earlier volumes, were somewhat meagre, I have made large additions to them in order to bring up the whole to a uniform standard and to facilitate the use of the book as a work of reference. With this clue in his hand the student, I hope, will be able to find his way through the labyrinth of facts. All the entries have been made by me, but [vi] the arrangement of them is in the main due to the Press Reader, whom I desire to thank for the diligence and accuracy with which he has performed his laborious task. The whole Index has been repeatedly revised and freely corrected by me in proof. In conclusion it is my duty as well as pleasure to thank my publishers, Messrs. The methodology adopted is historical approach. The history of church growth and development in Nigeria is divided into five periods namely: the period of introducing Latin Christianity in the 15th and 16th Centuries; the period of Denominationalism and missionary activities in the 19th Century from 1842 onward; the period of evolution of independent Churches; the period of indigenous African Churches; and the period of the birth of Charismatic and Pentecostal Churches. It is established in the paper that church growth led to numerical strength of churches as seen in the proliferation of churches in Nigeria. It is observed that the dramatic rise of charismatic and Pentecostal movement led to the emergence of new churches and evangelical groups. The work suggested the establishment of more churches and the practice of ethical and moral teachings of the Bible. It concludes by recommending that church growth and development should not be based on orthodoxy but orthopraxis in order to change African society for better.     European Scientific Journal October edition vol. 8, No.23 ISSN: 1857 – 7881 (Print) e - ISSN 1857- 7431 MAIN TRENDS IN THE CHURCH GROWTH IN NIGERIA Adamolekun, Taiye, PhD Department Religion and African Culture, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria Abstract: The paper discusses the main trends in history of church growth and development in Nigeria. The methodology adopted is historical approach. The history of church growth and development in Nigeria is divided into five periods namely: the period of introducing Latin Christianity in the 15th and 16th Centuries; the period of Denominationalism and missionary activities in the 19th Century from 1842 onward; the period of evolution of independent Churches; the period of indigenous African Churches; and the period of the birth of Charismatic and Pentecostal Churches. It is established in the paper that church growth led to numerical strength of churches as seen in the proliferation of churches in Nigeria. It is observed that the dramatic rise of charismatic and Pentecostal movement led to the emergence of new churches and evangelical groups. The work suggested the establishment of more churches and the practice of ethical and moral teachings of the Bible. It concludes by recommending that church growth and development should not be based on orthodoxy but orthopraxis in order to change African society for better. Looking at Christianity from that early beginning to the present time, many stages of development had taken place resulting to the planting and growth of churches.

Lecturer, Pan African College of Education Offa, Kwara State, Nigeria ABSTRACT In Africa, poverty is one of the problems that have continued to reduce to little effects most of the struggle made to make life meaningful to the generality of the African people. As the various government continues to introduce various programmes to alleviate poverty, Christian Churches seem not doing enough in consolidating the various government efforts to solve the problem of poverty. Despite the numerical growth of Christianity in Nigeria, the adverse effect of poverty in the nation has undermined the significance of this numerical growth. The desperate attempt to solve the problem of poverty anyhow by an individual member of different Churches in Nigeria has called into question the true practice of Christianity. Some are using ungodly ways to solve the problem of poverty as a result of the fact that Christian Churches are not active enough in solving the problem of poverty. Since by its nature, the Church is founded to promote Jesus’ ministry of providing both the physical and spiritual needs of people, the reality of poverty in the nation is making the major assignments of the Church of Christ which include the conversion of souls, showing mercy to the needy and other philanthropic services to the masses to be at stake.
