THE SHAKESPEARE SCHOLARSHIP.

SUBJECTS or EXAMINATION, 1901. I. A general knowledge of the writings of Shakespeare. II. A minute knowledge of the following plays :— Love's Labour's Lost. : Antony and Cleopatra. Winter's Tale". III. The Life and Times of Shakespeare.

IV. An Essay—not to exceed 5,000 words in length— on " English History as it can be learnt from Shakespeare's Plays;" or,

A Poem in English Verse—not to exceed 80 lines— on " Queen Elizabeth."

The Essays or Poems must bo legibly written and the condition as to length must be obeyed, and must be sent to tho Registrar before tho first Wednesday in the Examination Term, 1901.

The Examination shall be the Examination for tho Wyselaskie Scholarship in Political Economy. If the Scholarship he awarded, the Modal shall be given to tho Candidate who is placed second in order of merit; but if the Scholarship be not awarded, the Medal shall be given to the Candidate who is placed first in order of merit. Provided that if in any year there bo no Examination for the Wyselaskie Scholarship in Political Economy, the Cobden Club Medal shall be awarded to tho Candidate who obtains the highest marks iu Political Economy at the Final Honour Examination in the School of History. Pending the establishment of a Federal Defence Depart­ ment for Australia, the Secretary of State for War has consented to a temporary renewal of the system by which a yearly nomination to the Royal Military College was formerly allowed to each of the chartered Universities in colonies not having a Military College through which Commissions in the Army may be obtained. The upper limit of age for candidates will now be 20 years.
