And this is a requirement that art repeatedly demands, too. The mysterious Tmetamorphosis of the ugly caterpillar into the magnificent butterfly has sti- mulated man’s imagination from time immemorial. Everyone who watches Where does a butterfly is struck by its beauty, elegance and lightness. The ancient ability to think in images and symbols is inside each one of us – and in the world of opera, too. The opera is a treasure-house of the music call the tune? irrational. It unfolds “our imagination’s most beautiful alternative world.” Mozart himself confessed, “I need only to hear talk about opera, I need only to be in the theatre and hear voices – it suffices to transport me utterly.” The Theater an der Wien, the new opera house, is aiding a development in our city that no one can now fail to notice: more and more people with an interest in culture, and younger people too, are going to the opera! They are looking for a space where dreams and longings can unfold freely with great emotion and even pathos – and the opera provides a meeting place for them: everything appears bathed in “bright” light, and in this light one is drawn in by enchanting sounds.

  • Early Music Review EDITIONS of MUSIC Here Are Thirteen Works in the Present Volume
Early Music Review EDITIONS OF MUSIC here are thirteen works in the present volume. The first two are masses by John Bedingham, while the others are anonymous mass movements (either New from Stainer & Bell T single or somehow related). Previous titles in the series have been reviewed by Clifford Bartlett, and I confess this English Thirteenth-century Polyphony is the first time I have looked at repertory from this period A Facsimile Edition by William J. Summers & Peter M. since I studied Du Fay at university! At that time I also Lefferts sang quite a lot of (slightly later) English music, so I am not Stainer & Bell, 2016. Early English Church Music, 57 completely unfamiliar with it. I was immediately struck 53pp+349 plates. by the rhythmic complexity and delighted to see that the ISMN 979 0 2202 2405 8; ISBN 978 0 85249 940 5 editions preserve the original note values and avoids bar £180 lines - one might expect this to complicate matters with ligatures and coloration to contend with, but actually it is his extraordinarily opulent volume (approx. 12 laid out in such a beautiful way that everything miraculously inches by 17 and weighing more than seven pounds makes perfect sense. Most of the pieces are in two or three T- apologies for the old school measurements!) is a parts (a fourth part – called “Tenor bassus” – is added to marvel to behold. The publisher has had to use glossy paper the Credo of Bedingham’s Mass Dueil angoisseux in only in order to give the best possible colour reproductions of one of the sources).

NEWSLETTER of The American Handel Society Volume XXXII, Number 1 Spring 2017 AMERICAN HANDEL FESTIVAL 2017 : CONFERENCE REPORT Carlo Lanfossi This year, Princeton University (Princeton, NJ) hosted the biennial American Handel Festival on April 6-9, 2017. From a rainstorm on Thursday to a shiny Sunday, the conference unfolded with the usual series of paper sessions, two concerts, and a keynote address. The assortment of events reflected the kaleidoscopic variety of Handel’s scholarship, embodied by a group of academics and performers that spans several generations and that looks promising for the future of Handel with the exploration by Fredric Fehleisen (The Juilliard School) studies. of the network of musical associations in Messiah, highlighting After the opening reception at the Woolworth Music musical-rhetorical patterns through Schenkerian reductions Center, the first day of the conference was marked by the Howard and a request for the audience to hum the accompanying Serwer Memorial Lecture given by John Butt (University of harmony of “I know that my Redeemer liveth.” Finally, Minji Glasgow) on the title “Handel and Messiah: Harmonizing the Kim (Andover, MA) reconstructed an instance of self-borrowing Bible for a Modern World?” Reminding the audience of the in the chorus “I will sing unto the Lord” from Israel in Egypt, need to interrogate the cultural values inherent to the creation tracing the musical lineage to the incipit of the English canon of Messiah, Butt structured his keynote address around various “Non nobis, Domine” through its use in the Cannons anthem topics and methodologies, including an analysis of Handel’s Let God Arise and the Utrecht Te Deum .

  • NEWSLETTER of the American Handel Society
NEWSLETTER of The American Handel Society Volume XVIII, Number 1 April 2003 A PILGRIMAGE TO IOWA As I sat in the United Airways terminal of O’Hare International Airport, waiting for the recently bankrupt carrier to locate and then install an electric starter for the no. 2 engine, my mind kept returning to David Lodge’s description of the modern academic conference. In Small World (required airport reading for any twenty-first century academic), Lodge writes: “The modern conference resembles the pilgrimage of medieval Christendom in that it allows the participants to indulge themselves in all the pleasures and diversions of travel while appearing to be austerely bent on self-improvement.” He continues by listing the “penitential exercises” which normally accompany the enterprise, though, oddly enough, he omits airport delays. To be sure, the companionship in the terminal (which included nearly a dozen conferees) was anything but penitential, still, I could not help wondering if the delay was prophecy or merely a glitch. The Maryland Handel Festival was a tough act to follow and I, and perhaps others, were apprehensive about whether Handel in Iowa would live up to the high standards set by its august predecessor. In one way the comparison is inappropriate. By the time I started attending the Maryland conference (in the early ‘90’s), it was a first-rate operation, a Cadillac among festivals. Comparing a one-year event with a two-decade institution is unfair, though I am sure in the minds of many it was inevitable. Fortunately, I feel that the experience in Iowa compared very favorably with what many of us had grown accustomed Frontispiece from William Coxe, Anecdotes fo George Frederick Handel and John Christopher Smith to in Maryland.

SALZBURG FESTIVAL 20 July – 31 August 2019 Press Release of the Salzburg Festival Young Singers Project 2019 Supported by the Kühne Foundation photo: SF/Anne Zeuner (SF, 2 July 2019) “The lucky hand – or rather, lucky ear – of Evamaria Wieser, the director of the Young Singers Project, is demonstrated by the fact that the participants in the Young Singers Project achieve excellent results at competitions all over the world and are engaged by the best opera houses,” says Festival President Helga Rabl-Stadler. “This year, a total of 13 participants of the Young Singers Project will appear on the programme of the Salzburg Festival. Furthermore, I am particularly pleased that Joel Prieto, a 2008 YSP participant, will sing the title role in Orphée aux enfers.” With the Young Singers Project, the Salzburg Festival has created a high-carat platform for the support of young vocalists, which looks back upon eleven years of successful history in 2019. Since 2008, 157 young vocalists from 41 countries have participated in the Young Singers Project. This year, 13 young singers from eleven nations will take part. They are from Canada, Spain, the UK, France, Russia, Poland, the USA, Ukraine, Ireland and, for the first time, from Mexico and New Zealand. 1 SALZBURG FESTIVAL 20 July – 31 August 2019 The singers are chosen at international auditions. As part of their fellowship, they have the opportunity to work with Festival artists. Tuition includes not only music lessons and repertoire expansion, but also stage rehearsals, language coaching and lied interpretation. Its master classes and strong practical orientation make YSP an international model for young artist programmes.

For those of you who have not yet renewed your memberships, may I urge you to do so. Each year the end of spring brings with it the Handel Festivals in Halle and Göttingen, the latter now regularly scheduled around the moveable date of Pentecost, which is a three-day holiday in Germany. Elsewhere in this issue of the Newsletter you will find my necessarily selective Report from Halle. While there I heard excellent reports on the staging of Amadigi at Göttingen. Perhaps other members of the AHS would be willing to provide reports on the performances at Göttingen, and also those at Halle that I was unable to attend. 2019 Biography Recipient of Johann Adolf Hasse-Stiftung’s 2019 Hasse-Preis and the City of Halle’s 2017 Händel-Preis, mezzo-soprano Vivica Genaux hails from Fairbanks, Alaska. February 2019 will find her first in Poissy and Bilbao for performances with Les Musiciens du Louvre and then in Karlsruhe for Internationale Händel-Festspiele’s Händel-Gala, in which she will be joined by mezzo-soprano Ann Hallenberg in a performance of music by Vivaldi, Händel, Rossini, and Bellini. In April 2019, she returns to Washington, DC, for her rôle début as Emma in Rossini’s Zelmira with Washington Concert Opera. From there, she travels to Madrid to revisit music sung by Farinelli. A month later, in May 2019, Vivica takes a Vivaldi programme to Vienna’s Musikverein with Bach Consort Wien. Gender Stories, a presentation of music by Händel, Hasse, and Galuppi that unites her with countertenor Lawrence Zazzo and Lautten Compagney Berlin, will be heard in Dortmund and Halle. In June, she joins an ensemble of acclaimed colleagues for Farinelli & Friends, a gala concert at the Salzburger Pfingstfestspiele.
