And this is a requirement that art repeatedly demands, too. The mysterious Tmetamorphosis of the ugly caterpillar into the magnificent butterfly has sti- mulated man’s imagination from time immemorial. Everyone who watches Where does a butterfly is struck by its beauty, elegance and lightness. The ancient ability to think in images and symbols is inside each one of us – and in the world of opera, too. The opera is a treasure-house of the music call the tune? irrational. It unfolds “our imagination’s most beautiful alternative world.” Mozart himself confessed, “I need only to hear talk about opera, I need only to be in the theatre and hear voices – it suffices to transport me utterly.” The Theater an der Wien, the new opera house, is aiding a development in our city that no one can now fail to notice: more and more people with an interest in culture, and younger people too, are going to the opera! They are looking for a space where dreams and longings can unfold freely with great emotion and even pathos – and the opera provides a meeting place for them: everything appears bathed in “bright” light, and in this light one is drawn in by enchanting sounds. -
Early Music Review EDITIONS of MUSIC Here Are Thirteen Works in the Present Volume
Early Music Review EDITIONS OF MUSIC here are thirteen works in the present volume. The first two are masses by John Bedingham, while the others are anonymous mass movements (either New from Stainer & Bell T single or somehow related). Previous titles in the series have been reviewed by Clifford Bartlett, and I confess this English Thirteenth-century Polyphony is the first time I have looked at repertory from this period A Facsimile Edition by William J. Summers & Peter M. since I studied Du Fay at university! At that time I also Lefferts sang quite a lot of (slightly later) English music, so I am not Stainer & Bell, 2016. Early English Church Music, 57 completely unfamiliar with it. I was immediately struck 53pp+349 plates. by the rhythmic complexity and delighted to see that the ISMN 979 0 2202 2405 8; ISBN 978 0 85249 940 5 editions preserve the original note values and avoids bar £180 lines - one might expect this to complicate matters with ligatures and coloration to contend with, but actually it is his extraordinarily opulent volume (approx. 12 laid out in such a beautiful way that everything miraculously inches by 17 and weighing more than seven pounds makes perfect sense. Most of the pieces are in two or three T- apologies for the old school measurements!) is a parts (a fourth part – called “Tenor bassus” – is added to marvel to behold. The publisher has had to use glossy paper the Credo of Bedingham’s Mass Dueil angoisseux in only in order to give the best possible colour reproductions of one of the sources). -

NEWSLETTER of the American Handel Society
NEWSLETTER of The American Handel Society Volume XVIII, Number 3 December 2003 HOUSTON GRAND OPERA’S GIULIO CESARE Giulio Cesare is one of Handel’s most justly celebrated operas. First performed in 1724, it was revived several times during the composer’s lifetime. Donald Burrows, in his Master Musicians biography of Handel selects the opera for detailed analysis, citing among its strengths, "a fast-moving plot, full of incident, and some of Handel’s best arias, as well as scenes that are spectacular from both musical and dramatic standpoints."1 During the twentieth century the opera was revived fairly regularly, though it often fell victim to the well-intentioned surgery of producers, directors and conductors. Music History teachers of a certain vintage can remember the Norton Anthology of Western Music recorded excerpt which featured the title role sung by Wagnerian bass Hans Hotter. It was also not so long ago when the choice of recorded versions was limited to a severely cut, Belliniesque ornamented American recording and an uncut every-da-capo-taken-but-unornamented German performance. Just two years ago, while preparing a performance of excerpts for an Opera Scenes class, I was frustrated in my attempts to find a score with the part of Caesar in treble clef, the choices being bass or alto clef. The recordings of Giulio Cesare have improved recently, but the work still awaits a critical edition and Handel’s beautiful yet lengthy score remains a challenging one for opera houses Keiichiro Watanabe March 2, 1932 - December 12, 2001 to realize on the stage. -

SALZBURG FESTIVAL 20 July – 31 August 2019 Young Singers Project
SALZBURG FESTIVAL 20 July – 31 August 2019 Press Release of the Salzburg Festival Young Singers Project 2019 Supported by the Kühne Foundation photo: SF/Anne Zeuner (SF, 2 July 2019) “The lucky hand – or rather, lucky ear – of Evamaria Wieser, the director of the Young Singers Project, is demonstrated by the fact that the participants in the Young Singers Project achieve excellent results at competitions all over the world and are engaged by the best opera houses,” says Festival President Helga Rabl-Stadler. “This year, a total of 13 participants of the Young Singers Project will appear on the programme of the Salzburg Festival. Furthermore, I am particularly pleased that Joel Prieto, a 2008 YSP participant, will sing the title role in Orphée aux enfers.” With the Young Singers Project, the Salzburg Festival has created a high-carat platform for the support of young vocalists, which looks back upon eleven years of successful history in 2019. Since 2008, 157 young vocalists from 41 countries have participated in the Young Singers Project. This year, 13 young singers from eleven nations will take part. They are from Canada, Spain, the UK, France, Russia, Poland, the USA, Ukraine, Ireland and, for the first time, from Mexico and New Zealand. 1 SALZBURG FESTIVAL 20 July – 31 August 2019 The singers are chosen at international auditions. As part of their fellowship, they have the opportunity to work with Festival artists. Tuition includes not only music lessons and repertoire expansion, but also stage rehearsals, language coaching and lied interpretation. Its master classes and strong practical orientation make YSP an international model for young artist programmes. -
Bachfest Leipzig Bach Und Seine Söhne
2008 13. – 22. 06.

The genus just newly created is celebrated everywhere. Not quite. For in Romee were allowed operas for decades heard exclusively in a closed society. The Papal State, who wanted to seem virtuous achieved at least outwardly like all these stories about love, lust, passions and all the ancient heroes and gods was morally rather questionable. -
