MM052421 Resiliency “Coming out of the pandemic stronger than we came in!” -Navy Memorial Board of Directors For more than 30 years, the United States Navy Memorial has presented the Lone Sailor Award and the Naval Heritage Award at the Lone Sailor Awards Dinner, an exceptionally enjoyable event held for the last several years at the National Building Museum in Washington D.C. The Navy Memorial was unable to host the event due to the pandemic last year so, just like the sea services and their commitment to mission, we improvised. The one-hour livestream program to celebrating the honorees brought the awards program to a much wider audience. This September, the Navy Memorial will again produce a compelling livestream program that will recognize our 2021 Awardees. In addition, this year the Navy Memorial will host a “Premiere and Reception” that will coincide with the online airing of the Program. Please join us! National Park Service U.S. Department of the Interior National Mall and Memorial Parks Washington, D.C. Pennsylvania Avenue National Historic Site Management Plan April 2014 To address planning needs for Pennsylvania Avenue National Historic Site (NHS), the National Mall and Memorial Parks (NAMA) had previously undertaken the preparation of an environmental assessment, which considered a range of alternatives for managing the NHS and their environmental impacts. In spring 2014 the National Park Service (NPS) determined that NAMA did not need to complete the environmental assessment because only management issues were being addressed and therefore the plan was not a major federal action. As a result, NAMA has prepared this Management Plan for Pennsylvania Avenue NHS, which is based on the “Draft Environmental Assessment.” This Management Plan document includes an introduction, a summary of planning, the context for the management plan (including the relationship of the NPS plan with the 1974 Pennsylvania Avenue Plan prepared by the Pennsylvania Avenue Development Corporation, and the site’s purpose and significance), as well as the specific manage- ment actions. Background information about the Pennsylvania Avenue NHS Manage- ment Plan is provided at http://www.nps.gov/nationalmallplan/PennAve.html. Enjoyed by millions of visitors each year, the National Mall is a primary location for public gatherings such as demonstrations, national celebrations and special events. Although Washington, D.C., is consistently rated a top destination for domestic and international travelers, and the National Mall is one of the most visited national parks in the country, little systematic attempt has been made to document the influence of the National Mall as a motivating factor for visitation to Washington, D.C., separate from the many other attractions and facilities in the metropolitan area. Accordingly, a visitor study was conducted to assess visitor behaviors and the socioeconomic impacts of visitor spending on the greater Washington, DC metropolitan area. The study addressed the National Mall as a separate entity from the museums and attractions in the area that are not managed by the National Park Service.

When architect Pierre L'Enfant designed Washington, DC, he envisioned a memorial that would celebrate the rich heritage of the United States Navy, dating back to 1775 when a force of eight small wooden ships fought and won its first battle at sea. L'Enfant's vision would be realized over two hundred years later. Navy legend and former Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Admiral Arleigh Burke decided there was enough “talk” about a Navy Memorial and that it was time to act.
