BROADWAY THEATRE COMPANY Annual Report 2020 Filming Daddy Long Legs, 2020. The Year in Review 2020 was certainly a record-breaking year, but not the usual records we like to celebrate in the pages of our annual report. At this time, we are over a year into an unprecedented global pandemic that has shuttered many arts organizations and businesses for good, but Broadway Rose is still here because of our loyal and steadfast donors and supporters. Together the Broadway Rose community has managed this crisis with creativity and sound financial management. Our 2020 Season of “Boundless Vision” shifted in ways we never would have imagined, but the COVID-19 pandemic has proven to us that we are nimble and creative and our vision indeed knows no bounds. Please enjoy this report as we look back on this challenging year. We opened our 29th season with a new musical comedy spoof of comic book crusaders, Up and Away, and a record number of season subscribers at nearly 3,400. Unlike many organizations, we were able to hold our annual gala, Flashback to the ‘80s, before the shutdown, with a rowdy crowd and much success. The initial lockdowns in March of 2020 caused the cancellation of our second show, Ain’t Misbehavin’, which was set to open at the end of the month and run through the end of April. Little did we know that our “Meet the Cast” event on March 14 would be the last in-person event held in 2020. “We are so incredibly grateful for this effort, for your finding a way to bring theater and this uplifting, hopeful story into our living room in these dark times... We were transported into their world, their story, for two hours that left us on a high for days after... Can’t thank you enough!!” - Daddy Long Legs viewer Quarantine restrictions resulted in the cancellation or Joe Theissen and Malia Tippets in Daddy Long Legs, 2020. postponement of five of our six mainstage productions, amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost revenue. We also had to cancel our regular youth camps and classes and call off our annual New York Trip, an important donor stewardship event. As quarantine measures continued, we shifted to producing original digital content. The Midday Cabaret series of livestreams featuring Broadway Rose artists and alumni sharing stories and performing from their homes across the nation ran weekly on Wednesdays from May 6 to September 2, 2020. A “Meet the Staff” interview series and videos of Broadway Rose casts reuniting to reprise a favorite song offered further entertainment and connection while the stage was dark. Instead of our regular summer education programs, we offered new options for limited groups with strict social distancing in place and were able to provide performance training and invaluable social connection for 52 teens. In the fall of 2020 we replaced one of our postponed productions with the 2-person, full-length musical Daddy Long Legs. Through special arrangement with the publishers, we were able to offer a streaming version of the show to our patrons. We surpassed our projected sales goal for this production. To finish our 2020 season, we replaced our postponed holiday show with a smaller revue called Christmas My Way: A Sinatra Holiday Bash. Again, we were unable to offer public performances, but were very pleased to have streaming ticket sales exceed our projections by 40%. In 2020, we saw an almost total loss of ticket revenue caused by the COVID-19 pandemic shut down, but we also experienced a significant increase in support from donors, with over 600 of you making gifts for the first time last year. Our ticket sales and educational programs accounted for 6% of our income at just over $105,000 (compared to $1.6 million for ticket sales in 2019), while donations and events accounted for 91% at $1.65 million. With the increase in contributed revenue, as well as the receipt of a Payroll Protection Loan and grants provided by the CARES Act, we remained solvent and ended 2020 in a strong financial position. Now, we are looking forward to welcoming Socially-distanced dance classes at the New Stage, 2020. audiences back into the theatre this summer for the first time since March 2020! In May 2021, we broke ground on our $3.4 million building expansion originally planned for April 1, 2020 and anticipate a grand opening celebration early in 2022. Thank you for your tremendous generosity, for your flexibility, and for your belief in Broadway “Thank you Broadway Rose for Rose.
