This includes demonstration , greenhouses, and a large fenced off area for nursery plants.

Spring-House Gardens

Spring-house gardens is a nursery and event space located in Nicholasville. They sell plants but also showcase them it provides customers with an idea of what the plants look like matured. Spring- house has also renovated a tobacco barn into an event space that can be used for weddings and other large scale events. The barn is also home to multiple classes and workshops that are taught throughout year. They have several greenhouse tunnels that they use to house different plants depending on the season. These greenhouses don’t seem out of place they flow very well with the rest of the overall design, by using purposeful plantings and design elements like pergolas. In terms of applicability to the arboretum the separation of spaces using plants, and the interactive social spaces of this site could be very useful.

The arboretum is split into regions of Kentucky, by a known as the Walk Across Kentucky. The site of the new horticulture center is located in the Appalachian Plateau region, so all the plants in the area are native to that region. Preserving the plants on site is of the highest priority, however at times every can’t be saved. If plants must be removed, calling out the specific plants, allows for the more generic plants to be removed rather than rarer specimen species. Knowing where all the specific plants also helps with the layout of the overall design, figuring out ways to use existing vegetation to an advantage. This also helped when choosing ’ 1” inch = 100 plants for the final design, saving a lot of research time. Pinus Juniperus Viburnum strobus virginiana acerifolium

The hydrology of this site flows very well, the elevation gradually descends and levels out in a natural swale at the bottom of the site. However the adjacent parking lot drains into the nearby street, so it’s important in the new design to create a more sustainable way to deal with the runoff from hardscape. The program of the horticulture center will increase the runoff and wastewater significantly, which offers the potential to increase the green infrastructure. This could even open the possibility for a wetland area, or rain gardens.

Illustrative Master Plan The early concepts of this project were formed through trial and error of many different designs. The first was inspired by the Appalachian plateau, since the site is part of that region on the walk across Kentucky. Arboretum Sign The design mimics how the valleys weave through the mountainous region. The second concept was loosely inspired by the natural swale at the bottom of the site, and focuses on changing the terrain in a relatively flat area.

The final master plan, draws from the fluidity of the Appalachian plateau concept and implements the swale and berm from the Earthworks concept.
