I'm still happy with the work Bunn is doing on Magneto. I feel like he has a great grasp of the character and what makes him tick. Yes, the book is indeed dominated by sometimes quite violent action, but there are moments that rise above that. I was especially struck by Magneto's Magneto: Reversals Volume 2, mid-battle, that his Mutant Growth Hormone riddled Magneto: Reversals Volume 2 don't truly understand their powers, because they've never had to live with the danger and persecution that's inherent to being a mutant. In ge I'm still happy with the Magneto: Reversals Volume 2 Bunn is doing on Magneto. In general, It was Magneto's Magneto: Reversals Volume 2 processes that kept me reading. That said, there's a big chunk of the book that's taken up with the Axis event. Not having read any of the other books that were part of the event, I felt a little lost at times. It looks like Uncanny Avengers probably played a big part, and I have something like zero interest in catching up on that title. From what's in the book, I was basically able to follow what's going on here, I think, but who knows what I missed. Magneto leading an all-star team of villains was kind of hilarious, but I'm not sure if comedy was what they were going for. As in the previous volume, the plotting is a little weak and vague, but I'm not really reading this for the story at this point. I'm reading it for Bunn's take on Magneto, which I still think is pretty thoughtfully done. Oct 06, Gavin rated it liked it Shelves: comics. Art is terrible. Almost enough to ruin things. Polar opposite of Elektra book from earlier today. Good Magneto: Reversals Volume 2 study of Magneto, again going with four different names Erik Magneto: Reversals Volume 2 Magnus etc. Here he keeps taking out people abusing mutants, including some Mutant Growth Hormone growers. There's a team up with villains and Deadpool Magneto leads and that's straight up awe Art is terrible. There's a team up with villains and Deadpool Magneto leads and that's straight up awesome. I will follow up with it, because there was an interesting interaction between Erik and his memories of his life and one person in particular. Contrary to the Elektra book, Magneto isn't woeful about his life and things, he just keeps moving forward, even if his doubts are there, he isn't a whiny bitch about it. Oct 27, Terence rated it liked it Shelves: marvel-unlimited Magneto despite his drop in power continues on his crusade to protect mutants from anyone who would harm them. In this search he comes Magneto: Reversals Volume 2 the Red Skull enslaving mutants in Genosha. Magneto is definitely a tortured character. His measures are extreme, but his enemies are brutal. He doesn't fight just to fight he seeks to protect mutants from people who would enslave or exterminate them. This volume is quite similar to the last until the Axis tie in. Then Magneto is forced to recruit some frie Magneto despite his drop in power continues on his crusade to protect mutants from anyone who would harm them. The first Magneto book was pretty decent - the second is just straight up crap. Once things awkwardly switch to Axis though the whole thing falls apart. Pure superhero schlock! I still like the overall concept of the series of Magneto as a lone vigilante but this second book is rubbish, largely because of the superhero crapfest that takes up the latter half of this volume. Once again Magneto: Reversals Volume 2 intrusive event ruins a perfectly decent series - good job, Marvel! View all 3 comments. Page 1 of 30 The motivational mind of Magneto: towards Jungian discourse analysis Jacquelyn Seerattan-Waldrom Supervised by: Dr Geoff Bunn April 2016 Page 2 of 30 The motivational mind of Magneto: towards Jungian discourse analysis ABSTRACT Discourse analysis has been a prominent area of psychology for 25 years. It traditionally focuses on society’s influence on the world through the rhetoric (implicit persuasion) and symbolism, dealing with important psychological areas such as ‘identity’ and many social justice issues. Graphic novel analyses is also increasingly more common. Social justice issues are especially prominent in analysis: particularly in X- Men, through metaphors of ‘oppression’, ‘sexuality and identity’ (Zullo, 2015). Psycho-discursive analysis focuses on the 'subject' neglected in traditional discourse analysis, which has been provided recent attention. A Freudian and Jungian psycho-discursive analysis of DC comic character, 'Batman' has been studied regarding motivation and psyche (Langley, 2012). However, ‘reflexivity’ in Freudian psycho-discursive analysis is a known problem that previous psycho-discursive analyses have been unable to tackle effectively. Therefore, this study proposed a step towards Jungian psycho-discursive analysis adapted from personality and motivation theory, ‘Psychological Types’ (1971) and theoretical expansions by Myers and Myers (1995). It was applied to fictional representations of psyche within the X-Men comic character, ‘Magneto’, due to fictional inspirations which commonly form Jungian theory. Magneto was interpreted as the type, ‘INTJ’, and future implications of further applications to psyche are discussed. The Green Scare: Radical environmental activism and the invention of “eco-terror- ism” in American superhero comics from 1970 to 1990 by Brendan James Lacy A thesis presented to the University of Waterloo in fulfi llment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Master of Architecture Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2021 © Brendan James Lacy 2021 Author’s Declaration I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required fi nal revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. iii Abstract American environmentalism became a recognizable social move- ment in the 1960s. In the following two decades the movement evolved to represent a diverse set of philosophies and developed new protest methods. In the early 1990s law enforcement and govern- ment offi cials in America, with support from extraction industries, created an image of the radical environmental movement as danger- ous “eco-terrorists.” Th e concept was deployed in an eff ort to de-val- ue the environmental movement’s position at a time of heightened environmental consciousness. With the concept in place members of the movement became easier to detain and the public easier to deter through political repression. Th e concept of “eco-terrorism” enters popular media relatively quickly indicated by the proliferation of superhero comics in the ear- ly 1990s that present villainous environmental activists as “eco-ter- rorists.” Th is imagery contrasts comics from 1970 which depicted superheroes as working alongside activists for the betterment of the world.

While it is obvious. that these comic books can be used in the classroom as a source of reading material, it is tot so obvious that these comic books, with great economy, simplicity, and narrative density, can be used to further introduce novice readers to the techniques found in narrative and to the terms employed in the study and discussion of a narrative. The output of the Marvel Conics Group in particular is literate, is both narratively and pbSlosophically sophisticated, and is ethically and morally responsible. Some of the narrative tecbntques found in the stories, such as the Spider-Man episodes, include foreshadowing, a dramatic fiction narrator, flashback, irony, symbolism, metaphor, Biblical and historical allusions, and mythological allusions.4MKM1 4 4 *********************************************************************** * Reproductions supplied by EDRS are the best that can be made * * from the original document. * *********************************************************************** ) U SOEPANTMENTO, HEALD.. • Holding out for a Hero(Ine): an Examination of the Presentation and Treatment of Female Superheroes in Marvel Movies Robyn Joffe
Holding Out for a Hero(ine): An Examination of the Presentation and Treatment of Female Superheroes in Marvel Movies Robyn Joffe Abstract Prior to the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) and Captain Marvel (2019), the way that female characters from the Marvel Comics’ canon were realized onscreen was problematic for several reasons and encumbered by issues rooted in the strong female character trope and its postfeminist origins. A close examination of three Marvel superheroines—Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, and Mystique—reveals that while they initially appear to be positioned as equal to their male teammates, they are consistently burdened with difficulties and challenges that men never have to face. The filmmakers’ focus on these women’s appearance and sex appeal, their double standard for violent women, and their perception of a woman’s role, create a picture of “strong” women that is questionable at best and damaging at worst. Keywords: Marvel, postfeminism, sexualization, infantilization, maternalism Introduction The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a media franchise and shared universe, owned by Marvel Studios and currently consists of twenty feature films, seven television series, one digital series, assorted direct-to-video short films, tie-in comic books, and other mixed media products. It is a shared universe that is actively expanding as more and more properties are slated for release. The X-Men film series, until recently owned by 20th Century Fox, is one of the interconnecting series of films based on specific characters from Marvel Comics. It currently consists of eleven films and two television series, with more to be released this year.

In Memoriam 1942 – 2013 | ROGEREBERT..COM Choose a Section REVIEWS DEADPOOL | Brian Tallerico February 12, 2016 | “Deadpool” is the cinematic equivalent of that kid in school who would always say how much he didn’t care what people thought of him, but just loud enough so everybody could hear him. It is the teenager who pretends to be too cool to care, but wants you Print Page to like him so badly it hurts. Of course, this is partially a byproduct of being a cog in the machine of the superhero movie Like 197 marketing system—you unavoidably have to hit a few of the beats of the genre in order to satisfy the audience. However, 6 “Deadpool” fails to live up to the potential of its beloved source material, subverting its own agenda by becoming a remarkably generic, by-the-numbers man-in-tights flick. “Deadpool” is about a guy who constantly pushes back against the expectations of Tweet the superhero, but the movie about him fails to match his rebellious personality. It’s a remarkably straightforward origin flick, lacking in true satire of its genre, carried almost entirely by its lead. Deadpool is a fun character, but he’s still in search of a fun movie to match his larger-than-life personality. After years in development limbo, Ryan Reynolds finally gets a role that he was WATCH NOW undeniably built for in this adaptation of Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld’s Marvel creation. A lot of pushback against reviews of comic book films tends to come from those who believe the critic unaware of the source material’s inherent strengths, so it seems fair to note that I read Deadpool back in the ‘90s.
