Medan, January, 2020 Maria Ayu Pretty Sitanggang Reg. No. 150705001 9 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA ABSTRACT This thesis entitled Dysphemism Used in Deadpool Movie. Dysphemism in Deadpool is problematized in its home country, i.e. the United States, due to its excessive occurrences. For this reason, this study aims at 1) to find out the types of dysphemism which illuminates the uses of dysphemism, and 2) revealing the functions which explain why the characters utilize such dysphemistic words. The theory of Dysphemism proposed by Allan & Burridge (2006) is used to reveal the functions of the use of dysphemism. In addition, the author also uses semantic approach by delineating the meaning of dysphemism in a lexical and contextual manner along with examples of its use in context. Moreover, the analysis of componential meaning is used to observe the types of dysphemism based on Allan & Burridge' theory and Rawson's theory. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data of this research are words and phrases which indicated dysphemism. The sources of the data are transcript and video. There are 95 dysphemism data obtained and observed by the writer. The result of this research shows that three types of dysphemism are found in the movie, i.e. profanity, obscenity, and insult. The dysphemism type mostly found is the obscenity with 31 data (33%). In addition, there are seven functions of the use of dysphemism revealed: to humiliate something or someone else, to express anger, to emphasize thing or condition, to state and represent a very bad thing or condition, to express astonishment or amazement, to show intimacy and to express excitement. The most dominant function of dysphemism that is used in this movie is to humiliate something or someone else with 79 data (83%). Keywords: Dysphemism, Semantics, Deadpool 10 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA ABSTRAK Skripsi ini berjudul Penggunaan Disfemisme dalam film Deadpool. Disfemisme dalam Deadpool bermasalah di negara asalnya, yaitu Amerika Serikat, karena kemunculannya yang berlebihan. Dengan alasan ini, penelitian ini bertujuan 1) untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis disfemisme yang menggambarkan penggunaan disfemisme, dan 2) mengungkapkan fungsi-fungsi yang menjelaskan mengapa karakter menggunakan kata-kata disfemistik. Teori Disfemisme yang dikemukakan oleh Allan & Burridge (2006) digunakan untuk mengungkap fungsi-fungsi penggunaan disfemisme. Selain itu, penulis juga menggunakan pendekatan semantik dengan menggambarkan makna disfemisme secara leksikal dan kontekstual beserta contoh penggunaannya dalam konteks. Selain itu, analisis makna komponen digunakan untuk mengamati jenis disfemisme berdasarkan teori Allan & Burridge dan teori Rawson. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Data penelitian ini adalah kata dan frasa yang mengindikasikan disfemisme. Sumber data adalah transkrip dan video. Ada 95 data disfemisme yang diperoleh dan diamati oleh penulis. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa tiga jenis disfemisme ditemukan dalam film, yaitu profanity, obscenity, dan insult. Jenis disfemisme yang paling banyak ditemukan adalah obscenity yaitu 31 data (33%). Selain itu, ada tujuh fungsi penggunaan disfemisme yang diungkapkan: untuk menghina sesuatu atau orang lain, untuk mengekspresikan kemarahan, untuk menekankan sesuatu atau kondisi, untuk menyatakan dan mewakili hal atau kondisi yang sangat buruk, untuk mengekspresikan keheranan atau kekaguman, untuk menunjukkan kedekatan dan untuk mengekspresikan kegembiraan. Fungsi paling dominan dari disfemisme yang digunakan dalam film ini adalah untuk menghina sesuatu atau orang lain dengan 79 data (83%).

CHARACTERS AND OTHER CREATIVE ELEMENTS: a. Exclusive to SPE: . The “Spider-Man” character, “Peter Parker” and essentially all existing and future alternate versions, iterations, and alter egos of the “Spider- Man” character. All fictional characters, places structures, businesses, groups, or other entities or elements (collectively, “Creative Elements”) that are listed on the attached Schedule 6. All existing (as of 9/15/11) characters and other Creative Elements that are “Primarily Associated With” Spider-Man but were “Inadvertently Omitted” from Schedule 6. September, 2020, Vol. 20 (Issue 1): pp. 28 - 42 Clevenger and Acquaviva Abstract “Hulk smash!” is one of the most iconic phrases uttered in the pages of comic books. The Incredible Hulk is one of comics’ most violent characters as the Hulk smashes first and asks questions later. The popularity of the comic book genre has exploded within past decades and the interest in comics has increased. But exactly how violent is The Incredible Hulk and what does that mean for readers? This research examines the occurrence of violence in the Incredible Hulk comics through a thematic content analysis of 248 issues. Specifically, such themes as violence against men and women, unpunished violence, formal punishments of violence, interventions to stop violence and the justification provided for violence were assessed. The goal of the research was to determine the amount and level of violence within the comic and in what context it occurred. Results indicate that there is a large amount of violence occurring within the pages of the Incredible Hulk, but that this violence is often justified and committed by the Hulk to protect himself and others. A discussion is provided regarding the potential impact this may have on a reader and their view of violence, crime and justice.

    The Incredible Hulk Monster, Man, Hero Dana McKnight Texas Christian University hen Marvel Comics introduced The Incredible Hulk in 1962, the following question was displayed prominently within a bold yellow question mark on W the front page: “Is he man or monster or…is he both?”1 Today, it seems easy to dismiss questions about the Incredible Hulk being a monster by merit of the popular Marvel Universe films, which brought the Incredible Hulk to a wide audience. I suspect that most Americans recognize the Incredible Hulk as a member of the Avengers: a hero, not a monster. However, when the Incredible Hulk first made his debut, Stan Lee expected his readers to wonder whether or not the Hulk would be a villain or a hero.2 Drawing from the first six issues of The Incredible Hulk I will discuss how the Incredible Hulk is simultaneously a hero and a monster, both an allegory of the military might of the United States in the atomic age and of the tenuous relationship between security and safety manifest in the uncontrolled destructive power of nuclear weapons. I will close with a glimpse into the contemporary post-9/11 Hulk. Man or Monster? First, it is cogent to get back to the “man or monster” question posed by Stan Lee in the very first issue of The Incredible Hulk, because the Hulk was both a man, Bruce Banner, and a monster, the Hulk. This research was conducted using Kenneth Burke’s theory of terministic screens to evaluate how the authors and artists created the comic books. Sonja Foss’s description of cluster criticism is used to determine key terms in the series and how they were contributed to the creation of characters. I also used visual rhetoric to understand how comic book structure and conventions impacted the visual creation of superheroines. The results indicate that while these superheroines are multi- dimensional characters, they are still created within a male standard of what constitutes a hero. Of course, this is partially a byproduct of being a cog in the machine of the superhero movie Like 197 marketing system—you unavoidably have to hit a few of the beats of the genre in order to satisfy the audience. However, 6 “Deadpool” fails to live up to the potential of its beloved source material, subverting its own agenda by becoming a remarkably generic, by-the-numbers man-in-tights flick. “Deadpool” is about a guy who constantly pushes back against the expectations of Tweet the superhero, but the movie about him fails to match his rebellious personality. It’s a remarkably straightforward origin flick, lacking in true satire of its genre, carried almost entirely by its lead. Deadpool is a fun character, but he’s still in search of a fun movie to match his larger-than-life personality. After years in development limbo, Ryan Reynolds finally gets a role that he was WATCH NOW undeniably built for in this adaptation of Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld’s Marvel creation. A lot of pushback against reviews of comic book films tends to come from those who believe the critic unaware of the source material’s inherent strengths, so it seems fair to note that I read Deadpool back in the ‘90s.

This is bad enough in theory, but the execution doesn't help - Cassaday's art has become oddly stiff at some point since Planetary , and Remender has everything drowned in speechifying and explanatory captions like he's channelling Chris Claremont. Volume No. I might catch up with the story later on, but I dropped this series pretty quickly in favor of the much better Avengers and X-Men books. In a climate that has fostered even greater mistrust of mutants than previously, Havok is appointed team leader, Rogue, Sunfire and Wolverine are perpetually disruptive presences, Scarlet Witch has cause to seek repentance and forgiveness for the very recent past, and so too does Wonder Man, still carrying a torch for her.
