(Josip Klemenc). SUMMARY Ancient Siscia was one of the most important cities of the Roman Pannonia. Its foundation can be traced as back as into the prehistoric times, several thousand years ago. Roman settlers only used the prehistoric settlement’s position on the banks of the Kupa, important for the pre-roman communication network, sharing peoples and goods within the wider European area stretching. Roman ability to absorb and assimilate existing social and economic relations was crucial for the foundation of Siscia, key centre for strategic enlargement towards the Danube frontiers, preservation and construction of communication network. Thanks to the urban planning legislation and it’s colonial status (the first probably dated into 71 A.D., the next between 193 and 211 A.D.) the city expanded territorially and administratively. It retained characteristics of an urban environment even after the fall of the Western Roman Empire and the end of antiquity in Siscia dated around the year 600 A.D. Early medieval sources do not offer data on Siscia. However, several relevant documents/annales (e.g. Einhard’s Vita Karoli Magni, from the first half of the 9th century), and a small number of important archaeological remains, such as ancient siscian marble monuments reused for the early Croatian interlacing ornaments, speak in favour of highly developed social and political forms as well as relations with the early Croatian state nucleus. It seems that the Frankish retaliation after the uprising of Ljudevit was fatal for the further development of the area, as it entered its longest period of stagnation. The ideal strategic position of Sisak in the battles against the Turks will help the wider area to become a major military base. Along with stronger military constructing activities came the intense interest in the remains of the ancient Siscia, still present in the landscape. Besides the fact that the siscian archaeological heritage have been built into the foundations of the 16th century fortress, small ancient monuments accidentally found on the ground were also described by the forerunners and pioneers of archeology in Sisak (Wolfgangus Lazius). Part of Croatian lands belonging to the Habsburg Monarchy became essential for the realisation of the economic mercantilism planned by the Vienna experts, when the centuries- long wars against the Ottoman Empire ceased. The region grew economically and demographically as soon as the river navigable routes in the vicinity of Sisak were reopened. Serving either as members of the Border Commission with the Ottoman Empire (Count Luigi Fernando Marsigli), or as civil engineers, learned personalities travelling through Sisak, recorded what they saw; their records are thus precious information for the roman remains on the territory of modern Sisak. Although some of their records are highly precise and valuable, they still do not make a part of the planned and systematic archaeological research. The need for more extensive studies of Croatian history grew together with the Enlightment, thus a new generation of Croatian pioneers in archaeology was formed (Matija Petar Katančić, Adam Baltazar Krčelić), who devoted their attention to Sisak and ancient forerunner. Their testimonies are crucial for the reconstruction of the daily life of ancient Siscia. A period of rapid economic development coinciding with the development of the Illyrian movement in our country followed. In order to create the national identity, new generation of Croatian scholars (Ivan Kukuljević Sakcinski, Mijat Sabljar, Šime Ljubić, Ivan Tkalčić), will study national history more deeply, with particular stress on one of the major cities of the Western Roman Empire in Croatia, Siscia. Associations and institutions (Society for Yugoslav history and antiquity, the National Museum in Zagreb), which finally began the systematic processing and classification of the Sisal antiquities, were founded. Ideal basis were the growing architectural interventions in the area which now adapted to new economic needs (railway construction in 1862). With it came the exploitation of ancient archaeological materials for the construction of larger buildings of the new wealthy merchant elite, prevalently of foreign origin. A number of valuable antiquities, not built into the houses, were transported outside Croatian borders, without leaving a note on the site, surrounding of the finding or its description. This was a socio-political problem, as they did not feel that the antiquities were their own heritage, and did not consider importance of unifying the material. In that way important dimension of the history of Siscia was inevitably lost, being a direct reason for the poor epigraphical collection of Sisak (compared with those of Salona). However, with the second generation born in the 1850s, the awareness of local identity strengthened, and collections of antiquities were being formed; not very rich local patriots (Dragutin Jagić), formed the local archaeological association ("Siscia") to be in direct relation and under the supervision of experts from Zagreb (Josip Brunšmid). The network of museum trustees was created; when the activities of "Siscia” ended at beginning of the 20th century they took over the role of collectors of antiquities. Their work did not enter into the Croatian professional bibliography, but was crucial for the creation of broader archaeological conclusions, because it is very meticulous and comprehensive, putting the remains in correct geodetic framework. Although with difficulties, it is still possible to recognize them with the help of old ownership certificates and the old town maps. With termination of their archaeological action, war hardships, poverty and general turbulent socio-political

After the administrative establishment of the province of Pannonia this road became the main communication route, in the west-east direction, between Italy and the eastern provinces, especially with Pannonia and Moesia. The start of the road, which we follow in the context of the ARCHEST project, was in Aquileia, then across Emona to Neviodunim, passing Aquae Iassae towards Siscia and onwards into Sirmium, Singidunum and Viminacium. Myth-shrouded beginnings: the Amber Road and the Argonauts The territory of modern Slovenia was already covered with various routes during prehistoric times.

  • 1 Christian Traditions and Continuity in Transdanubia During the First
Christian traditions and continuity in Transdanubia during the first millennia The history and artefacts of Transdanubian Christianity before the Hungarian conquest might be divided to three sections based on politico-historical and ethnical reasons. The first section is the province under Roman authority until the 430s. The second period lasts from 430 to 568: the province got under the rule of the Huns for a hort interval, than Germanic groups entered the region, the Lombards being the last of them until 568. The third period is that of the Avars from 568 until the Hungarian conquest of Transdanubia at the beginning of the 10th century. I. Roman period (1–4th centuries) The province of Pannonia got under Roman authority from the reigns of Augustus to Claudius (41–54 AD). The northern and eastern borders of the province were formed by the Danube, the western border by the eastern slopes of the Alps, while the the southern border was to the south of the Sava river. Located on the nothern border of Italy, the province always had a military significance beacause of its geographic location: its role was to defend the empire against Germanic and Sarmatian people. More than twenty urban communities were established in the province. From the middle of the 3rd century, when attacks on the empire had become more frequent, the majority of the emperors were from southwestern Pannonia and its environs. Sirmium slowly became a significant location, where emperors frequently dwelled. In the 430s the protection of Pannonia Valeria’s borders ended because of pressure from Hun powers and the limes was opened.

CULTS AND RELIGIOUS INTEGRATION IN THE ROMAN CITIES OF THE DRAVA VALLEY (SOUTHERN PANNONIA) BY BLANKA MIŠIĆ A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT OF CLASSICS AND PHILOSOPHY ROYAL HOLLOWAY UNIVERSITY OF LONDON JANUARY 2013 1 DECLARATION OF AUTORSHIP I, Blanka Mišić, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Signed: ______________________ Dated: _______________________ 2 For my dearest parents. 3 ABSTRACT This work is a detailed examination of pagan cults and deities in three settlements along the Pannonian section of the Drava river (Aquae Iasae – modern Varaždinske Toplice; Iovia- Botivo – modern Ludbreg; and Mursa – modern Osijek) situated within the present-day territory of Croatia. The evidence examined consists primarily of inscribed votive dedications in stone, dating from the Roman conquest of Pannonia to the late third century A.D. Evidence is examined within the theoretical framework of cultural change, taking into account recent theoretical developments in the concepts of “Romanisation”, acculturation, identity- expression and syncretisation in order to determine the extent of cultural and religious integration along the Drava. A thorough examination of evidence reveals the emergence of differing and flexible religious identities specific to each settlement although united by the larger prevailing trend of nature-divinity worship. Our Drava evidence also reveals that economic, social, political and geographic factors all produced an impact on the process and extent of cultural and religious integration, thus helping to form local, regional, provincial and imperial expressions of identity(ies). 4 TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. • Late Huns in the Carpathian
Late Huns in the Carpathian basin The European Hun Empire, which determinates the late ancient European politics, established its centre in the Carpathian basin, from where Hun Emperors governed both the Eastern and Western wings. 1 The late ancient chronicles gave us a detailed report on Attila’s deeds and campaigns. Unfortunately, only some fragments remained on those Huns, who settled down in the Carpathian basin. In the second half of the 19th century some Western-European historians created a special theory on the fast disappearance of the Huns from there, but it lacked any real evidences. In my paper I am trying exploring the traces of the Huns in the Carpathian basin or former Hungarian Kingdom. I recline upon some late ancient sources and Hungarian historical chronicles of Middle Ages, reports of contemporary Byzantine and Gothic sources and I used archaeological findings and anthropological surveys. Introduction Regarding some questions of the Late Huns some dogmas and misbelieves, which have been created in the 19th century, make orientations difficult for the historians. Although some Hungarian scholars wanted to make the question of the history of the late Huns clear using own Medieval Hungarian sources, but their theories were not taken into consideration by academic scholars. In the 21st century – using modern technology and discovering huge amount archaeological findings and historical sources - we need to rethink the life and history of the Late Huns in the Carpathian basin. The first Hungarian royal clan, or Arpad traditionally originated from Scythia or Maeotis- swamp, and it was the centre of Attila’s youngest son, Irnek, who settled down there after the great Gothic and Hunnic war in 454.

Skeletal and dental remains of 28 individuals were examined for the possible presence of caries, alveolar bone disease, cribra orbitalia, dental enamel hypoplasia, degenerative osteoarthritis of the vertebrae and major jo- ints, Schmorl’s nodes on vertebrae, periostitis, and bone trauma. The analysed sample is characterised by relatively high frequency of caries and alveolar bone disease, most probably as a result of poor oral health and diet mostly based on cereals. High frequencies of cribra orbitalia, dental enamel hypopla- sia and periostitis suggest relatively frequent episodes of physiological stress such as starvation and infectious diseases, while the distribution and preva- lence of bone fractures indicate a relatively low level of interpersonal violence in the studied community.

  • Emperor Avitus in Pannonia?
EMPEROR AVITUS IN PANNONIA? PÉTER KOVÁCS Pázmány Péter Catholic University Egyetem Str. 1, H-2081 Piliscsaba, Hungary [email protected] Abstract: In his paper the author examines the sources of the supposed Western Roman military expedition of Emperor Avitus in Pannonia in 455 that was thought to be the last Roman military action in the territory of the former Roman province. Ana- lizing the sources, he comes to the conclusion that during his short reign, Avitus had no time to visit the province and his route (iter) mentioned by Sidonius Apollinaris must be identified with his journey from Arelate to Rome. The Roman military action in Pannonia can probably be identified with a short demonstrative campaign in the SW region of the dioecesis (i.e. Savia) or with a legation of the Pannonian Barbarians to the emperor in Northern Italy. Keywords: the history of Pannonia in 5th century, Roman Pannonia, Emperor Avitus, Sidonius Apollinaris One of the last episodes of late Roman Pannonia was – according to several theories – that Emperor Avitus would have visited Pannonia in 455–456 AD and regained the control of the provinces after Attila’s death and the battle of Nedao in 454.1 Some scholars even tried to localize it exactly, and the last Roman period of the inner fort of Keszthely-Fenékpuszta had been connected to this event.2 As the fort was interpreted as a supply base of Avitus they identified its final destruction layer and mass graves with an unknown siege of the Ostrogoths who arrived at the province in the following year.3 Despite these opinions, in my paper I intend to deal with this supposed imperial visit, and first of all, with its sources.

The Ostrogoths in Late Antique Southern Pannonia, AAC 49: 165–205. This paper aims to analyze and interpret the literary and archaeological evidence relating to the rule of the Ostrogoths in late antique southern Pannonia, i.e. the late Roman provinces of Pan- nonia Savia and Pannonia Secunda (known in the Ostrogothic times as Pannonia Sirmiensis). The study is centred around two distinctive chronological periods into which, according to narrative sources, the Ostrogothic presence and rule in southern Pannonia can be divided: first, from the collapse of the Hun dominance in the Middle Danube region to the departure of the Ostrogothic groups from Pannonia (454–473), and second, from the establishment of the Ostrogothic rule in Italy to their withdrawal from the region between the Sava, the Drava and the Danube at the onset of the Byzantine-Ostrogothic war (493–535). The second period was introduced by a brief Ostrogothic stay in southern Pannonia on their way from the Lower Danube area to Italy (488–489), as well as extended by a temporary reappearance of the Ostrogoths in Pannonia Savia when they mustered troops from among local barbarian groups (537). One of the main purposes of the study is to bring the historical record into a meaningful and methodologically sound correlation with archaeological evidence bearing in mind the limitations with regard to precise dating of the mate- rial and its attribution to specific groups of peoples.
