The odds of a new maga- zine being successful are pretty slim - especially in a market such as ours, a market that is controlled by such an alarmingly small number of corporations. So why have we decided to ig- nore our more sensible sides and launch a magazine like this? Quite simply, because we think it is needed. Right now we see very little promise in mainstream magazines to provide an in- formative and reflexive glimpse of what it is like to be living in the world today. We don't want articles and features on super models and celebrities - we want to read about ourselves, and people just like us. So we have started clamor w'nh the intention of providing a resource and outlet for people to fmd and express themselves. As you look through the pages of clamor, you will notice that it is a magazine that doesn't beha\e like most magazines. Adver- tising is minimal and diverse content makes up the balance. The pieces included in this issue and in future issues display a wide variety of styles ranging from the footnoted informative essay to the first-person story to the photo-essay that allows images to construct their own narrative. Some of the pieces will be self- contained works while others will be works in progress inviting you to enter your own thoughts into the discussion. In clamor you will find something that interests you and con- nects to your life in some way. By creating a magazine that is about real people and real experiences, we are opening up the often one-sided medium and actively encouraging you. the reader, to participate in the creation of useful media. We invite you to contribute your own thoughts, experiences, opinions, and art to help us fulfill this goal and continue to do so for many more issues. Please contact us with your ideas! Tours roll across the coun- try like mobile homes in a Florida hurricane. The most memo- rable for this magazine/bar owner were the Warped Tour and Wakestock, where such bands as Bad Religion, Billy Talent, Alexisonfire, Closet Monster, The Trews and Crowned King had audiences in mosh-pit frenzies. At Wakestock, in Wasaga Beach, Ont., Gasoline, Fox Racing, and Bluenotes rocked so hard at their two-day private cottage party that local authorities shut down the stage after Magneta Lane and Flashlight Brown. Poor Moneen didn't get to crush the eardrums of the drunken revellers. That was day one! Day two was an even bigger party with the live music again shut down. The Reason, Moneen and Crowned King owned the patio until Alexisonfire and their crew rolled into party. Gasoline would also like to thank Chuck (see cover story) and other UN officials for making sure that the boys in Sum41 made it back to the Bovine for another cocktail, despite the nearby mortar and gunfire during their Warchild excursion. • Notes from the Underground: a Cultural, Political, and Aesthetic Mapping of Underground Music
Notes From The Underground: A Cultural, Political, and Aesthetic Mapping of Underground Music. Stephen Graham Goldsmiths College, University of London PhD 1 I declare that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Signed: …………………………………………………. Date:…………………………………………………….. 2 Abstract The term ‗underground music‘, in my account, connects various forms of music-making that exist largely outside ‗mainstream‘ cultural discourse, such as Drone Metal, Free Improvisation, Power Electronics, and DIY Noise, amongst others. Its connotations of concealment and obscurity indicate what I argue to be the music‘s central tenets of cultural reclusion, political independence, and aesthetic experiment. In response to a lack of scholarly discussion of this music, my thesis provides a cultural, political, and aesthetic mapping of the underground, whose existence as a coherent entity is being both argued for and ‗mapped‘ here. Outlining the historical context, but focusing on the underground in the digital age, I use a wide range of interdisciplinary research methodologies , including primary interviews, musical analysis, and a critical engagement with various pertinent theoretical sources. In my account, the underground emerges as a marginal, ‗antermediated‘ cultural ‗scene‘ based both on the web and in large urban centres, the latter of whose concentration of resources facilitates the growth of various localised underground scenes. I explore the radical anti-capitalist politics of many underground figures, whilst also examining their financial ties to big business and the state(s). This contradiction is critically explored, with three conclusions being drawn. First, the underground is shown in Part II to be so marginal as to escape, in effect, post- Fordist capitalist subsumption.
