A5 Western Transport Corridor Preliminary Sources Study Report – Section 1 Table 4.4-1 Summary of Historical Mapping Map Map Description Date/ Scale Edition 1st 1:10,560 New Buildings to Cloghcor (Sub-Section 1A) (~1830) Lough Neas - Collection of flax and cloth mills Drumgauty - flax mill adjacent to a mill pond neighbouring an unspecified waterway. South of the village a burial ground is illustrated along with a small quarry Eden - Tannery West of Grange Foyle on banks of the River Foyle - Ferry house and chimney Four Flax mills are located along the unspecified Burn Dennet tributary in the villages of Milltown and Ballynabwee. Dunnalong - ferry house situated 1.5 km east of the village. Further east of the ferry house a large brickfield is to be found. Extensive field drains and mill streams transverse the section along what appeared to be field boundaries. Drumenny Little and Drumenny Big - Former river channel running parallel to the river Foyle for approximately 1.5km. Ballynabwee Fort - Four additional forts are located within the situated immediately south of the village of Gortmessan, west of the Burn Dennet Bridge and west of the village of Tamnabryan. Bready - large slate quarry surrounded by what appears to be wooded land. Limestone quarries - 1km east of the Bready, west of Dullerton village and south of Upper Lisdivin. East and north of Cloghogle - Three slate quarries located adjacent to the current A5 alignment. Cloghcor to North of Strabane (Sub-Section 1B) The land use is predominantly agriculture with small communities mainly concentrated around towns / villages. Ballymagorry and MacCrakens - Industry is noted in the form of flax, corn and paper mills along the banks of the Glenmornan River. Artigarven - Two bleach mills and a flax mill south of the village. Ballyheather - Kiln and flax mill Woodend - Tannery North of Strabane bog - Small brickfield Strabane Canal - Originates in Strabane town then follows the shoreline through Backfence, Desert and Greenlaw before terminating in the River Foyle west of Balldonaghy. Two locks are noted along this section. Glenmornan River flows adjacent to the canal. Burn Dennet River - Old channels illustrated on the map, and in particular Plea Isle Lough Neas - A large pond surrounded by marshy ground situated south of Lough Neas town drained by a conduit orientated in a north south direction. Two slate quarries are indicated approximately 300m south east of Woodend and 350m south west of Lough Neas. Pollockstown - two forts located north and south of the village. Cloghcor and in the vicinity of Leckpatrick - Three churches with associated grave yards North of Strabane to South of Strabane (Sub-Section 1C) Strabane Town - Development is on the north side of the River Mourne. South east of Strabane town - Brewery Mourne River - Flows through Strabane merging with the River Finn at the Point of Magirr. Approximately 400m north west of Strabane Bridge, river channel divides to create Lyon’s Island. Lifford Bridge crosses the River Foyle approximately 250m north of the Point of Magirr The Cavanlee River converges with the Mourne south of Milltown. An unnamed stream originates in a forested area approximately 1.5km northeast of Strabane town. Quarries - 20 in total across the section; Gravel pits north of the section. Slate quarries around Roundhill and Calheme, Quarries are shown to be limestone in the vicinity of Carricklee and Inchenny Upper. Milltown - Lead vein and corn mill A fort and an oracle are sited east of Strabane in Calheme and Clabermore respectively 2nd 1:10,560 New Buildings to Cloghcor (Sub-Section 1A) (~1856) Lougfh Neas - flax mill Adjacent to Burngibbagh - flax mill West of Gortavea - Ferry quay and fish house West of Grange Foyle - Carrickmore ferry quay. Sections of the River Foyle and Burn Dennet banks are annotated to be on embankment Gortmessan village - liable to floods with the marshy vegetation. Adjacent to River Foyle - four flood gates Gortmonly Hill - contours indicate standing at 722ft (220m). Two standing stones sited north and east of Lisdivin Lower. Only Ballynabwee is now labelled as a fort. Quarrying activity can be observed at a further nine new locations predominantly in the vicinity of Bready, Clogholgle Upper and Grange Foyle. The large slate quarry sited in Sollus, and described on the 1 st edition map has significantly increased in size encroaching on to the adjacent road. Cloghcor to North of Strabane (Sub-Section 1B) Ballyheather - Flax Kiln and bleach mill. West of Leckpatrick - Brickfield. 796036-0600-R-005 June 2009 © Mouchel 2009 Appendix D A5 Western Transport Corridor Preliminary Sources Study Report – Section 1 Map Map Description Date/ Scale Edition Strabane Canal - A quay with small pier has been constructed where the canal converges with the River Foyle approximately 200m south of the Burn Dennet mouth. Sections of the River Foyle, Glenmornan River and Burn Dennet are now annotated to be on embankment. A section of land adjacent to the current A5 alignment is annotated to be liable to flooding within the vicinity of Cloghor R.C Chapel. Lough Neas - Increased in size North of Killycurry Lower Town - A small reservoir is illustrated adjacent to the Burn Dennet River channel. The gravel pits north of the section identified on the 6inch 1 st edition map series appear to have now been back filled. Ballylaw Upper - White Fort. Two smaller forts are situated approximately 600m to the north west and south west of White fort. Killcurry Lower Town - Fort North of Strabane to South of Strabane (Sub-Section 1C) Inchenny Lower - Two Flax Mills are now present north and east of the village. The Finn Valley railway and Londonderry and Enniskillen railway have now been constructed and they merge south of Lyon’s Island. A turn table is noted at this point. Point of Magirr and Urney Glebe - River Finn shoreline is indicated to be flanked via embankment and noted to be liable to flooding. East of Carricklee Hill - Limestone quarry has increased in size; however two quarries previously noted 2.5 km south west of Strabane appear to have been backfilled. 3rd 1:10,560 New Buildings to Cloghcor (Sub-Section 1A) (~1904) Banks of the River Foyle - Seven sluices, some of which were previously noted as flood gates. Several sandbanks are noted within the river channel, notably Grange Island being one of the largest of these. The Donegal railway has now been constructed along the banks of the River Foyle in the vicinity of Prehen. Nineteen new quarries can be identified in this section. These are mainly concentrated in the north in the vicinity of Dunhugh and Kittybane, south of Glenderowen and on the north and west flanks of Gortmonly Hill. Several quarries identified on the 2 nd edition map have now expanded or been backfilled in the vicinity of Bready, Cloghole upper, Lisdivin and Grange Foyle. North of New Buildings - souterrain is adjacent to an unnamed road South of Clondermot - Clondermot Church and grave yard. North east of New Buildings - Corrody reservoir has now been constructed. New Buildings - goods shed Dunconan - scutch mill. North of Magheramason - corn mill Cloghcor to North of Strabane (Sub-Section 1B) The Donegal railway has now been constructed and passes through Ballyheather, which is annotated to have a station, Pollockstown, MacCrackens, Ballymagorry, which also has a station and associated goods shed. South of MacCrackens - corn and flax mills are now shown to be disused. Artigarvan - creamery and corn mill. North west of Leckpatrick - brickfield Lough Neas looks to now be an area of marsh land. The Great Northern Railway crosses the River Foyle at Islandmore Bridge and then continues to Londonderry. Strabane Canal – Tow path now adjacent. Lower and Middle Desert - Two swing bridges cross the canal West of Artigarvan - Cloghogle. Many of the gravel pits previously shown are now absent from the map. North of Strabane to South of Strabane (Sub-Section 1C) Strabane Town - significantly expanded on the north banks of the River Mourne and adjacent to Strabane Canal. Industry in the town includes a gas works, graving dock and boat house, a collection of factories named factory row, sano mill and a laundry located in the centre. North west of Strabane - Strabane Water works includes a relatively large reservoir. West of Strabane - engine house and two large goods shed associated with the railway station Nine new quarries are distributed across the section predominantly east and north east of the town. Lekpartick - burial ground, South east of Strabane - Strabane Cemetery adjacent to the River Mourne. North of Ballymagorry - St. Mary’s church. 4th 1:10,560 New Buildings to Cloghcor (Sub-Section 1A) (~1930) Dunhugh, Prehen and Tamnakeery - Many of the larger quarries are annotated as now being disused. Magheramason - corn mill now disused. The EBNI Transmission line is shown to largely follow the route of an unnamed road. The Great Northern Railway is now labelled as the UTA Railway.
