KEENE, Carolyn Harriet Stratemeyer Adams Geboren: 1892.

  • Location, Location, Location by Pam Horack Page 15
Nancy Drew: Location, Location, Location by Pam Horack Page 15 Nancy’s World (to me) In real estate, the mantra is “Location, Location, Location”. As in a story, the right setting can be an effective plot device and can be used to evoke specific feelings. The Nancy Drew books often used a location to create the backdrop for the mysterious and adventurous. As a child, I was able to use my grandparents’ home as a true reference for many of the Nancy Drew settings, thus bringing the stories to life and turning me into Nancy Drew Green’s Folly, located in Halifax County, Virginia, was home to my maternal grandparents. As my mother was raised there, our family visited frequently. The estate has served many functions through the years: county courthouse, a racetrack, a farm, and currently an 18-hole golf course, which was originally developed by my grandfather, John G. Patterson, Jr. As a child with a vivid imagination, my senses were aroused by mysterious features of the old home. This was the world of my childhood and it made a natural location for many of my adventures with Nancy Drew. As many of the Nancy Drew stories involved large old estates, my mind easily substituted the real world for the fictitious. There seemed to be too many coincidences and similarities for it to be otherwise. I found my imagination using Green’s Folly as the backdrop for the following stories: 1. The Hidden Staircase 2. The Mystery at Lilac Inn 3. The Sign of the Twisted Candles 4.

  • A Last Talk with Leslie Mcfarlane
A Last Talk with Leslie McFarlane DA VID PALMER L eslie McFarlane, one of the world's most popular children's authors and a prolific contributor to Canadian popular culture, died on September 6th, 1977, in Whitby, Ontario. Born at Carleton Place, Ontario, in 1902, he worked as a reporter for several newspapers in Ontario and Massachusetts, and from the twenties to the forties contributed hundreds of stories and serials to the "better pulps" and "sn~ooth-paper magazines" (as Maclean's explained in 1940) in Canada, the U.S.A. and Great Britain. In this period he also published two novels, and under various pseudonyms wrote numerous children's adventure books for the Stratemeyer Syndicate of New Jersey (home of the Bobbsey Twins), including the first Hardy Boys books. In the late thirties and forties he wrote dozens of radio plays, and in 1944, after two years with the Department of Munitions and Supply, he was invited by John Grierson to join the National Film Board. During the next fourteen years he wrote, produced or directed (often all three) twenty- eight documentary fbs, winning several awards and an Oscar nomination. In 1958 he became head of the television drama script department at the CBC and wrote many television plays for that and other networks. He continued to produce occasional books (and revisions of earlier works) for children, and some of these later writings are reviewed elsewhere in this issue of CCL. Ironically, in view of this enormous output, McFarlane is probably best known now as the original Franklin W.

  • Errata, Fixes, Updates, and Notes
ERRATA, FIXES, UPDATES, AND NOTES 02 February 2016 The sun did come up today. Well, actually it was pretty darn cloudy. But, as expected, Showdown at Widow Creek , the eleventh book in the Hardy Boys Adventures series, was issued. 03 February 2016 Shoot. On the order form, it’s mentioned that the seventh edition comes in four volumes. Actually, it’s three. ’Cause I ran out of spine colors. 07 February 2016 Oops. On The Shore Road Mystery , I had the order wrong for the dust jackets on 1941A-23 and 1941B-24 . The 5050 dust jacket came before the version with no price code and twenty titles on the flap. Please do a bit of scribbling on your copy of H&HI. Perhaps a two-headed arrow? Note that there’s a somewhat similar problem on the 1942 printings of What Happened at Midnight . However, the order is correct on Midnight . The last dust jacketed printing of The Mystery of the Flying Express should be 1961 B-40 , not 1961A-40 . We have an automatic numberer, but not an automatic letter incrementer. 16 February 2016 The eleventh printing of Trouble at the Arcade popped up. 07 March 2016 Oasis releases The Battle of Bayport , the sixth of the Hardy Boys Adventures, in unabridged audio format. 08 March 2016 Ugh. Well, with , and , whatever. But it’s a good point… Thanks, Becky. 09 March 2016 A Figure in Hiding . 1942B-7 now has a price code of P.C.J. , rather than missing. All copies seen previously had been clipped.

While leaving the baseball field the Hardy boys are approached by a blind peddler with a warning for their father Fenton Hardy. Then the A Figure in Hiding take their boat, the Sleuth out on Barmet Bay for a ride and to watch the testing of a new hydrofoil boat named the Sea Spook. While admiring the new boat they almost have a collision with it, allowing them a reason to board the boat where they find a glass eye, presumably belonging to Mr. Lambert who was test driving the boat when the near collision happened. When the boys try to track down Mr. Lambert he goes missing and Bill Braxton, the owner of the Sea Spook is attacked at his boathouse and the Spook is searched. Meanwhile, Fenton Hardy examines the warning from Henry Zatta, the blind peddler who is really only just blind in one eye but is pretending to be blind because he is undercoverand declares that it must be warning them to keep away from the Goggler Gang. They then realize that Mr. Lambert is actually a hoodlum named Spotty Lemuel. Their discussion is interrupted by an old man at the door named Zachary Mudge who is staying at Doc Grafton's Health Farm, a luxurious resort overlooking Barmet Bay.
