As a kid, I never really noticed the dated elements, but they are very obvious to me now. Overall, this is another fun book that kill entertain middle graders. Even adults will enjoy the nostalgia of Hunting for Hidden Gold. Labels: book , kids , mystery. Katherine P April 26, at PM. Newer Post Older Post Home. Subscribe to: Post Comments Atom. The Hardy Boys head to Montana to help their father who had been working on a case and broke his ribs. They go to the village of Lucky Lode and find a mystery connected to a man they saved, who had been shot by careless hunters in the beginning of the book. The man they saved had his gold stolen; when he was in Lucky Lode mining, he suspected one of his partners who was trying to save the gold had disappeared. When in Lucky Lode, they meet Mr. Burke who owns the general store; they later learn he is a spy called "Slip Gun", working for Big Al, the villain. While hunting for the hidden gold the Hardy Boys spot a cave, so they head into it to search for clues to where the gold might be, but they run into a pack of wolves before they find any clues and have to find a way to get out of the cave. They also find Bart Dawson is Bob Dodge, the man who flew them to Montana, who is revealed to have had amnesia. They end up recovering the gold and round up all the bad guys in the story. While their father Fenton Hardy is in Montana working on a case of missing gold the Hardy Boys go skating on Shallow Lake with their friends Chet Morton and Jerry Gilroy where they meet Jadbury Wilson, a poor old man who is also a former gold miner from Montana. Wilson tells them his tale of how Bart Dawson, a trusted member of his party, ran off during a gun fight taking four bags of their gold with him for safekeeping but failed to return once the gunfight ended. Upon returning to the Hardy home, with the injured Jadbury Wilson, the Hardy boys receive a telegram from their father requesting that they join him in Montana immediately. After a stranger, claiming to be Mr. He tells them that they are looking for gold which Bart Dawson claims was stolen from him by an outlaw named Black Pepper and his gang. So, what I didn't like about this book is the fact that the Hardy boys are really smart enough to not go into a mine without others with them and without anyone knowing where they are. We all know how dangerous mines are. They are also smart enough to not stay out in a blizzard where they could easily get lost and actually freeze to death. But we are to believe that they just did these foolish things. Well, actually they knew better in regards to both of these unwise choices, talking about the dangers and doing both anyway. Twice for each I might add. And last of all they are confronted by vicious wolves. Wolves rarely attack humans, and the fear of wolves has just been built up by fairy tales. May 23, Melanie rated it liked it. If these books weren't so quick to read, I don't know if I would continue reading them. This story was kind of fun though with the whole hunting for gold part. Mar 28, Barb rated it really liked it Shelves: fiction , kids , own , series , favorites. I wonder back in the day if kids found this so exciting. I just have to keep reminding it's a kids book lol. I did like the ending. Ok I liked the whole book lol! View 1 comment. Jul 09, Glen rated it liked it Shelves: mystery , young-adult. The title says it all. There's hidden gold, and the Hardy Boys, along with their friends, hunt for it. You know it's a good one when Chet is involved. Exciting Hardy Boys adventure with incidental music and sound effects. This would be a great story for a young boy, or in my case, a bored commuter. Feb 01, Erika the Nerd rated it really liked it. In the book, the Hardy brothers Joe and Frank get caught in one of their father's cases and end up risking their and their father's lives. They get caught up in the mist of Big Al and his gang who want the Hardy boys and their father out of the way of their plans. Joe and Frank's case about finding missing gold end up connecting a lot with their father's case on trying to catch the gang. One of my favorite characters was Dawson, or really Dodge. Dawson was with Black Pepper, before he was Big Al, In the book, the Hardy brothers Joe and Frank get caught in one of their father's cases and end up risking their and their father's lives. Dawson was with Black Pepper, before he was Big Al, and Mike Onslow, and they found a bunch of gold, but when they try to run off with the gold, the plane crashes and no one can find it. After this happens, Dawson gets hit and the head and can't remember who he is. He somehow gets the alias Dodge and that's what he's known as for the next 25 years! After that, he gets in a fight with Big Al, and gets clonked on the head with a flashlight, and his memory comes back as Dawson, but he can't remember his life as Dodge. I like Dodge and Dawson because he stays calm through all this and he shows his emotional side when he realizes how long it's been since he was Dawson. The only think I didn't like about the book was that the plot was slightly confusing. I usually read Hardy Boys books and have no problem, but I was kind of lost in the plot. I loved the plot, or at least the parts I could connect. Still a great book though, and I do plan on reading more Hardy Boys books! A better than average Hardy Boys mystery. There was an actual mystery in this one and it had several layers to dig through. This edition updated some of the language and elements from the original version, but it still a bit of a nostalgia trip. No Chet or any of the usual sidekicks, so it was a little more serious than most of the early books. Still, my youngest enjoyed it and I'd recommend it for any young reader or parent who reads with one who enjoys mysteries. Feb 01, Jacob Shepansky rated it it was amazing. Ok, so i am a very ADHD kinda person, so that really doesn't make me an avid reader.

  • A Last Talk with Leslie Mcfarlane
A Last Talk with Leslie McFarlane DA VID PALMER L eslie McFarlane, one of the world's most popular children's authors and a prolific contributor to Canadian popular culture, died on September 6th, 1977, in Whitby, Ontario. Born at Carleton Place, Ontario, in 1902, he worked as a reporter for several newspapers in Ontario and Massachusetts, and from the twenties to the forties contributed hundreds of stories and serials to the "better pulps" and "sn~ooth-paper magazines" (as Maclean's explained in 1940) in Canada, the U.S.A. and Great Britain. In this period he also published two novels, and under various pseudonyms wrote numerous children's adventure books for the Stratemeyer Syndicate of New Jersey (home of the Bobbsey Twins), including the first Hardy Boys books. In the late thirties and forties he wrote dozens of radio plays, and in 1944, after two years with the Department of Munitions and Supply, he was invited by John Grierson to join the National Film Board. During the next fourteen years he wrote, produced or directed (often all three) twenty- eight documentary fbs, winning several awards and an Oscar nomination. In 1958 he became head of the television drama script department at the CBC and wrote many television plays for that and other networks. He continued to produce occasional books (and revisions of earlier works) for children, and some of these later writings are reviewed elsewhere in this issue of CCL. Ironically, in view of this enormous output, McFarlane is probably best known now as the original Franklin W.
