Hans Augusto Reyersbach was born September 16, 1898 in Hamburg Germany. (If he was still alive he would have been 113 this month.) Hans loved to visit the Hagenbeck zoo and liked to mimic the sounds some of the animals made. In addition to German, his native language, Hans learned Latin, Greek, English, and French. Hans loved to draw and paint and he loved to laugh. Hans was also curious about many things. Hans became a soldier in World War I in Kaiser Wilhelm’s German army. Margarete Waldstein was a friend who studied art and photography. She and Hans spent some time in Brazil together where Hans sold bathtubs for the family business. Hans and Margarete married in 1935. They lived near the Amazon where there were lots of monkeys. Hans and Margarete had two pet marmoset monkeys. The name ‘Reyersbach’ was hard for the people in Brazil to pronounce so Hans shortened it and used Rey as his Pen name (a name that an author makes up and uses instead of his real name when he writes books) and Margarete shortened her name to Margret as well. The Reys moved back to Paris where Hans first wrote about George in a children’s book (Cecily G and the nine monkeys). The Reys were happy in Paris until Hitler’s Nazi army advanced to the edge of the city. The Reys were Jewish and it was not a safe place for them to be. Hans built two bicycles from spare parts to escape from Paris at the last minute. He and Margret carried with them 5 manuscripts (original books they had written by hand – kind of like sloppy copies) including Curious George (who was originally called Fifi in the Paris version). They eventually settled in New York and later in Massachusetts. The seven original Curious George stories by Margret and Hans have sold more than 25 million copies and have been translated into many languages. Hans died in 1977 and Margret died in 1996.
