414 Mondriaan: Who were the Kenites? OTE 24/2 (2011): 414-430 Who were the Kenites? MARLENE E. MONDRIAAN (U NIVERSITY OF PRETORIA ) ABSTRACT This article examines the Kenite tribe, particularly considering their importance as suggested by the Kenite hypothesis. According to this hypothesis, the Kenites, and the Midianites, were the peoples who introduced Moses to the cult of Yahwism, before he was confronted by Yahweh from the burning bush. Scholars have identified the Cain narrative of Gen 4 as the possible aetiological legend of the Kenites, and Cain as the eponymous ancestor of these people. The purpose of this research is to ascertain whether there is any substantiation for this allegation connecting the Kenites to Cain, as well as con- templating the Kenites’ possible importance for the Yahwistic faith. Information in the Hebrew Bible concerning the Kenites is sparse. Traits associated with the Kenites, and their lifestyle, could be linked to descendants of Cain. The three sons of Lamech represent particular occupational groups, which are also connected to the Kenites. The nomadic Kenites seemingly roamed the regions south of Palestine. According to particular texts in the Hebrew Bible, Yahweh emanated from regions south of Palestine. It is, therefore, plausible that the Kenites were familiar with a form of Yahwism, a cult that could have been introduced by them to Moses, as suggested by the Kenite hypothesis. Their particular trade as metalworkers afforded them the opportunity to also introduce their faith in the northern regions of Palestine. This article analyses the etymology of the word “Kenite,” the ancestry of the Kenites, their lifestyle, and their religion. -

Starting in Isaiah 13, God launches a series of judgments against the Gentile nations of his day. Making Isaiah’s list are Babylon, Assyria, Philistia, Moab, Ethiopia, Egypt, Edom, Tyre, and Syria. Tonight we’ll study God’s burden against the nations. ! Isaiah 15 begins, “The burden against Moab…” Three nations bordered Israel to the east - Moab, Edom, and Ammon. Today this area makes up the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan - a pro-Western monarchy with its capitol city of Amman - or Ammon. ! Today, it’s fashionable to research your roots - track down the family tree. Websites like Ancestry.com utilize the power of the Internet to uncover your genealogy. A Commentary on the Book of Isaiah By Pastor Galen L. Doughty Southside Christian Church September 2018 INTRODUCTION: This commentary is based upon my personal devotional notes and reflections on the Book of Isaiah. It is intended to help you better understand some of the historical background of the book and the theological issues in Isaiah’s prophecy. It is not a technical commentary designed for academic projects so I do not use footnotes or include a bibliography. This material is intended for use by members and friends of Southside Christian Church to help you in a verse by verse study of Isaiah. I try as much as possible to link what Isaiah says with other parts of the Bible especially the New Testament so readers can see the connections in Scripture. In the commentary there are occasional references to the original Hebrew words Isaiah used in a particular passage. Those Hebrew words are always written in italics and are transliterated into English from the Hebrew. I go chapter by chapter in the commentary and sometimes individual verses are commented upon, sometimes it is several sentences and sometimes a whole paragraph. This commentary is based on the New International Version and all Scripture quotations are taken from that version of the Bible. Books of the Bible, Scripture references and quotes are also italicized. DATE AND AUTHORSHIP: There is no disagreement among scholars that Isaiah needs to be split into two sections. The first from chapters 1-39 is set during Isaiah’s lifetime in the days of Kings Ahaz and Hezekiah of Judah and the destruction of the north Kingdom of Israel by the Assyrian Empire. -

ISAIAH 40-48 139 Introduction Most scholars agree that the bulk of the material in Isaiah 40-55 was composed in Babylon during the years of the Babylonian exile. As noted in the Introduction (page 11), it is often assumed to be the work of an unnamed individual prophet, called for convenience ‘Deutero-Isaiah’ because his writing is found in the Isaiah scroll. In this commentary I am following those who attribute it to a ‘School’ of prophet-preachers. These prophet-preachers show familiarity with the Isaiah tradition, as they do with other prophetic and Deuteronomic material, but their writing has its own distinct character, which has most in common with the temple singers responsible for the psalms. Scholars point out the many links between Isaiah 35 and Isaiah 40-55, but most agree that this is because Isaiah 35 was composed in post-exilic Judah precisely to bind chap- ters 40-55 to the Isaiah material in 2-39. For the same reason the historical appendix (Isaiah 36-39) was added as a bridge between these two blocks of prophetic writing. The key link is that the exilic writers of the Isaiah School offer an assurance that the sins of Jerusalem, so prominent in the criticisms made by Isaiah ben Amoz, have been pardoned, and a new beginning is being offered. It is likely that the oratorical nature of the material in Isaiah 40-55 is because it was composed for the preaching that took place in the synagogue. For this reason I will at times refer to the authors of this material as ‘prophet-preachers’, even if the words were written to be read and may never have actually been preached.
