  • Rosalie Sorrels
FOLK-LEGACY . · · FSI-31 11/f I Could Be the Rain'' Rosalie Sorrels With Mitch Greenhill Notes by Rosalie Sorrels Recorded by Sandy Paton Copyright © 1967 FOLK-LEGACY RECORDS, INC. Sharon, Connecticut 06069 "IF I COULD BE THE RAIN" R 0 S A L I E S 0 R R E L S I started agon1z1ng over this introduction months ago. I always agonize over writing notes; it's just part of the price I have to pay for the fun of producing records. I enjoy recording people, but writing about what I have recorded, afterwards, has never been easy for me. I guess everyone has to carry his own particular cross, and this one's mine. Recording Rosalie and Mitch was a snap. All I had to do was set up the mikes, juggle them around a little until I felt good about the sound that was coming through, push the record button on the recorder, sit back and say "Go!" It was really beautiful; that musical thing that was happening between them just went ahead and happened. Even the editing was easy. No tricky splices were required; all I had to do was cue up at the start of the accepted take and chop it off when the song was over. Zip, zap, and there was Side 1, Band 1. But the notes? Well, after setting some sort of endurance record on the self-torture course, I slipped out via the always-convenient route of rationalization. If writing's my cross, finding ways to justi fy avoiding it is my genius.

  • The English Occupational Song
UNIVERSITY OF UMEÅ DISSERTATION ISSN 0345-0155-ISBN 91-7174-649-8 From the Department of English, Faculty of Humanities, University of Umeå, Sweden. THE ENGLISH OCCUPATIONAL SONG AN ACADEMIC DISSERTATION which will, on the proper authority of the Chancellor's Office of Umeå University for passing the doctoral examination, be publicly defended in Hörsal E, Humanisthuset, on Saturday, May 23, at 10 a.m. Gerald Porter University of Umeå Umeå 1992 ABSTRACT THE ENGLISH OCCUPATIONAL SONG. Gerald Porter, FL, Department of English, University of Umeå, S 901 87, Sweden. This is the first full-length study in English of occupational songs. They occupy the space between rhythmic work songs and labour songs in that the occupation signifies. Occupation is a key territorial site. If the métier of the protagonist is mentioned in a ballad, it cannot be regarded as merely a piece of illustrative detail. On the contrary, it initiates a powerful series of connotations that control the narrative, while the song's specific features are drawn directly from the milieu of the performer. At the same time, occupational songs have to exist in a dialectical relationship with their milieu. On the one hand, they aspire to express the developing concerns of working people in a way that is simultaneously representational and metaphoric, and in this respect they display relative autonomy. On the other, they are subject to the mediation of the dominant or hegemonic culture for their dissemination. The discussion is song-based, concentrating on the occupation group rather than, as in several studies of recent years, the repertoire of a singer or the dynamics of a particular performance.

  • A Comprehensive Analysis of Elfen Lied and Its Opening Song
02 150 The semiotics This paper develops an exhaustive analysis of the Japanese animation series Elfen Lied (2004) and its opening song, “Lilium”, and politics which is an exceptional case within its field of production because its of the female lyrics are written in Latin. The purpose of my analysis is to determine if “Lilium” and its visual presentation really have something to do body: A (thematically and stylistically) with the series it presents, or not. My comprehensive hypothesis is that "Lilium", both in its musical level and in its visual presentation, fulfils all the formal characteristics of both a lied and analysis of an overture; and, given the latter, anticipates core thematic and Elfen Lied and stylistic elements of the work it precedes. Moreover, it even subtly anticipates the ideological content of the series, which consists of its opening a critical reading of gender roles and feminism in contemporary song Japanese and global society. To demonstrate these hypotheses, I made a detailed analysis of Elfen Lied, paying special attention to its animated adaptation but not ignoring its original manga version; and then I analyzed "Lilium" in its three aspects: its visual presentation, its lyric and its musical score. I have analyzed and emphasized how Ezequiel Ferriol the abundant intertextualities present in "Lilium" were productive Instituto de Filología Clásica for creating music and for transmitting the artistic and ideological Universidad de Buenos Aires content present in the series. The paper adopts an interdisciplinary [email protected] perspective, and uses theoretical tools from the fields of semiotics, intertextuality, and reception theory.

  • Bob Dylan's “False Prophet” – an Analysis by Kees De Graaf
Bob Dylan’s “False Prophet” – an analysis by Kees de Graaf. 1. Introduction When we hear this masterpiece “False Prophet” it feels as if this blues song were performed at a place to which Dylan alludes in his song ”My own version of You”. It is not hard to visualize Bob and his band playing “False Prophet” “at midnight on Judgement Day in the Black Horse Tavern on Armageddon Street”. The dragging blues riff feels like a performance in a nightclub near hell while the flames of Armageddon burn all around you. There has been a lot of debate on the internet about the artwork accompanying the release of the single “False Prophet”. The cigarette the dressed up skeleton has in his hands on the original picture was photoshopped into a syringe. What does this syringe mean at a time when the Covid-19 pandemic sweeps the world? And who is that silhouetted person in the background hanging on a rope? Although we have an idea who this person is, it is our intention not to get involved in American politics, so we leave this question open for your own interpretation. The title of the song “False Prophet” may seem a little unexpected when you consider that in the refrain the poet says: “I ain’t no false prophet”. It would be more obvious if the title were e.g. “No False Prophet”. But then again, in the words “I ain’t no false prophet” there is a double negation and although this is not always so, usually a double negation is regarded as an affirmation.
