The author emphasizes the importance of these sources for research on the history and culture of Polish Jews in the 17th and 18th centuries. He also specifies the types of documents related to Jewish issues authenticated in these books (e.g. manifestations and lawsuits, declarations of the Radom Tribunal), as well as current source publications and internet databases containing selected documents from Ukrainian archives. The Central State Historical Archive in Lviv (CDIAL) (known as the Bernadine Ar- chive) and the Central State Historical Archive in Kyiv (CDIAUK) both have exten- sive collections of records of the so-called castle courts (sądy grodzkie), also known as local Starost courts (sądy starościńskie) for the nobility: from the Bełz and Ruthe- nian Voivodeships in the Lviv archive; and from the Łuck, Podolia, Kyiv, and Bracław Voivodeships in the Kyiv archive. This is particularly important because – in the light of Jewish population counts taken in 1764–1765 for the purpose of poll tax assessment – these areas were highly populated by Jews.

The first place to look for your village is in the index for the Galicia map found on the Galizien German Descendants Society (GGDS) web site. If you find your village, the map co-ordinates given in the index will allow you to locate your village on the Galicia map, also available on the GGDS web site. In many cases the index will have the name of the parish that the village belonged to, which is necessary to find church records. If you don’t find your village in the Galicia map index, there’s an excellent chance that you’ll find it in Brian Lenius’ Genealogical Gazetteer of Galicia, if you have access to a copy. The gazetteer will give you additional information as to the administrative district and sub-districts, where the parishes were for the various denominations, maps to locate the village, and much more. Links are provided on the GGDS web site to Brian’s web site where the gazetteer can be purchased. For those who do not have access to a copy of Brian’s gazetteer, or who do not wish to purchase a copy at this time, the Gemeindelexikon, viewable on-line at wiki-de.genealogy.net, offers a good alternative.

In the year 2004 the Central Archives published the second edition of its guide to sources on Polish Jewry, in the original and in microfilm, which had been catalogued by the Central Archives until the end of 2000. While the first edition, published in 1988, presented the relatively poor pre-Glasnost scope of East-European archival documentation, the 2004 edition summarized the first decade of survey and research in archives of the former Soviet Union. The second edition represented extensive work in former Polish, Austrian and German government archives, situated in the former Soviet Union, relating to approximately 1000 cities, towns and villages and ranging from the 14 th to the 20 th centuries.
