The Soka Ikeda College of Arts and Science for Women is named after a renowned Japanese poet and Buddhist philosopher, Dr. and Soka Education System, which stresses on moral building. Dr. Daisaku Ikeda is the Honorary Founder and Mrs. Kaneko Ikeda is the Honorary Principal of the college. Soka Ikeda College of Arts and Science for Women (SICASW) has gloriously embarked the twenty first year with many accolades and achievements since its inception in the year 2000. The college has carved a niche for itself in women’s education for more than two decades. “The Institution of Excellence” award given by the Indian Council of Gandhian Studies, New Delhi adds glory to the success saga of the institution. The college is an ISO 9001:2015 Certified Institution and is affiliated to the University of Madras and recognized by the Government of Tamilnadu (G.O.281). The college offers 13 courses in U.G. 4 in P.G. and one research course in Commerce in Shift-I and 5 courses in U.G. and 3 courses P.G. in Shift-II. Dr. Daisuku Ikeda is a world renowned educator, photographer, poet of eminence, author and peace maker. He is the founder of Soka University (Tokyo), Soka Women’s College (Tokyo), Soka University of America (USA) and the Soka School System, which consists of primary schools, junior and senior high schools and kindergartens in Japan, , Dr.Daisaku Ikeda & Mrs. Kaneko Ikeda and Hongkong. He has also established Soka School in 2002. In recognition of Dr.Ikeda’s efforts, various institutions have honored him with awards, such as the United Nations Peace Award, the poet Laureate Award of the World Poets Association and the Kenya Oral Literature Association Award. Dr.Ikeda was conferred with the Doctorate of Letters by the University of Delhi in January 1999, regarding him as, “one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century”. In Tamilnadu, Bharathidasan University (Tiruchirapalli) was the first to confer a Honorary Doctorate of letters to Dr. Ikeda in 2002. Besides, he is the proud recipient of Jamnalal Bajaj International Award 2005 for promoting Gandhian values outside . Dr. Ikeda has been awarded 385 Honorary Awards from various Universities across the world in recognition of his efforts to promote peace through dialogues and cross-cultural exchange.

5 Distinctive Features

ACADEMIC EXCHANGE PROGRAMME

The Academic Exchange Programme between Soka University, Japan and Soka Ikeda College of Arts and Science for Women, Chennai enables the students of both institutions to pursue education in the partner institutions for five months and helps students in developing various skills both in academia as well as over all personality development. Every year two students from Soka Ikeda college are selected for academic exchange program.

CULTURAL EXCHANGE PROGRAMME

The Cultural Exchange Programme takes place every year to promote Global Amity and Harmony. It provides an opportunity to explore other culture, traditions, language and customs in an alternative perspective.

INTER-COLLEGIATE COMPETITIONS AND SEMINARS

College conducts inter-collegiate competitions and organizes seminars and conferences to give a deep understanding of academics and para-academics. It instills courage and confidence in the minds of the students.

COLLEGE MAGAZINE & NEWS LETTER

College magazine records the events of the college and the creative talents of the students through the annual college magazine, “Aspirations”. Newsletter, Iniya Ikeda, which gives a glimpse of all events in the campus it is issued to the students once in three months.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES

Cultural activities are conducted throughout the year to entertain the students and develop their team spirit. Many initiatives are taken to develop the students skills in singing and dancing. The inter-departmental cultural competitions “KALAKSHYA” is conducted every year to tap out the hidden talents of the students.

SPORTS AND GAMES

College promotes the physical fitness of the students through various track and field events. Special coaches are arranged to give training for Athletics, Kho Kho, Volley ball and Basket ball.

N.S.S.

The college has two NSS units that actively involve in community work like blood donation, awareness programs on health and cleanliness. Through these NSS units health camps are arranged in the college for the benefit of the students.

N.C.C

One N.C.C. army wing unit with 54 cadets is functioning from the academic year 2013- 2014. This wing actively participates in various training programmes throughout India.

RED RIBBON CLUB YOUTH RED CROSS

This club was started in the academic year 2015-16 and is functioning in the college premises to meet the stationery requirements of the students and staff.

LIBRARY

The Library is a key information resource for learning and research in the college. Our college library has wonderful collection of books, magazines and journals. Open access system is followed in our library for all books and closed access systems for reference books, journals, magazines and periodicals.

LABORATORY

The Laboratories are specially designed to meet the growing requirements of the students. The labs are refurbished from time to time to ensure safety of the students.

HOSTEL FACILITY BOOK BANK

Hostel facility is within the campus Each department runs a book bank, for that make students feel comfortable and benefit of students who cannot afford to secured. Hostel girls are provided with buy text books. hygienic food from the mess.

COLLEGE CANTEEN The college canteen provides nutritious food at reasonable prices.

TRANSPORT FACILITY

Transport Facility is available to the students staying outside the campus. The college operates a fleet of 19 buses for the easy transportation of students from different points in and around Ambattur, Avadi, Ayanavaram, Perambur, Redhills, Ayapakkam and Sholavaram at a nominal cost.

CAREER GUIDANCE AND PLACEMENT CELL

The college functions with the objective of providing guidance and assistance for the students to achieve their career goals. It also provides awareness on higher education, self-employment and job opportunities. Adequate emphasis is given for soft skill development complementing the regular academic performance.

GROUP INSURANCE

A compulsory group insurance scheme of accident cover is provided for students at a nominal premium per annum.

SCHOLARSHIP AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

The college facilitates students to receive Government Scholarships. The meritorious and economically underprivileged students are enabled to receive private scholarships.

ENTREPRENEURIAL DEVELOPMENT CELL

This cell helps in producing successful entrepreneurs with leadership qualities using innovative and ethical business practices. Aavin Parlour is installed in the college premises to develop the entrepreneurial skills of the students

ENACTUS CLUB

Enactus Club provides the skill based training programmes like driving, tailoring, jewellery making class, art and craft work. Students are practically trained through workshops.

MUSHROOM CULTIVATION

Mushroom cultivation techniques are taught to the students to make them self employed. A separate room is allotted for this purpose in the college premises.

ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION

Our college alumnae association is named “Soka Ikeda Alma”. The objectives of the association is to strengthen the relation between the college, alumnae and the community.

MENTORING CELL

As a part of the teaching-learning process, students are placed as a mentee under the care and guidance of a mentor and regular counseling is given to meet their socio- psychological needs. The mentoring system motivates the students to excel in both academic and non-academic fields and improve their quality of life. Slow learners are given special attention through remedial classes and counseling.

PARENT – TEACHER MEETING

Parent – Teacher Meetings are organized to enable parents participation in the monitoring mechanism.

GRIEVANCE REDRESSAL CELL

Grievance Redressal cell is constituted to maintain a congenial and unprejudiced educational environment. The cell looks into the complaints lodged by students and redresses it in a fair, confidential and impartial manner. 11 Admission Procedure

Application for admission can be obtained from the college office and Sethu Bhaskara Matriculation Higher Secondary School, No.59, Valliammal Street , Pudur, Ambattur, Chennai-600053 on payment of Rs.200/- in cash or DD drawn in favour of Soka Ikeda College of Arts and Science for Women, Chennai. The candidate is admitted to any one of the courses after due scrutiny of the application. Students selected for admission should pay their first semester fees in one installment and submit the following certificates in original. Transfer Certificate. Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary Course/any other State Board Mark statement / CBSE. Community Certificate. Income Certificate (for candidates eligible to avail SC & ST Scholarship). Certificate of physical fitness from a registered Medical Practitioner. Aadhaar card photo copy. The candidates who have passed in anyone of the following examinations should produce the Eligibility Certificate obtained from the University of Madras. 1. Higher secondary course examination of Tamil Nadu Government (private study). 2. Private candidate from the open school system. 3. Higher Secondary or equivalent examination conducted by all other State Board in India/Abroad. The Candidates applying for PG courses who have studied UG in other Universities should produce provisional eligibility certificate obtained from the University of Madras. Five passport size photographs of the candidate and a passport size photograph of the candidate’s parents or guardian is needed at the time of the admission. Paid fees will not be refunded.
