Budapest, November 2016 László Kajtár CEU eTD Collection László Kajtár: Doctoral Thesis ii ABSTRACT The thesis concerns certain philosophical issues that arise in connection with the notion of ‘narrative’. First, what is narrative? Second, if some narratives are fiction, what makes them so? Third, what can one learn from narrative art? Fourth, what is the difference between experiences that are lived and experiences that are conjured up through empathy by narratives? Fifth, how should narratives be interpreted, and do they need to be interpreted based on the communicative intentions of their makers? Sixth, what is the role of narratives in everyday life and in connection to one’s identity? And lastly, seventh, what is the role of the imagination in creating and comprehending narratives? These are all central issues in the study of narrative, and both the problems and the answers branch out into core areas of philosophy: metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind and philosophy of action. After the definition of narrative, the six chapters are divided into three groups: truth, meaning and mind. First then, even though ‘narrative’ is a widely used term in a variety of disciplines, it is an elusive one. I make a distinction between narrative artworks and elements, argue that most narratives artifacts are patchworks of narrative and non-narrative elements, and I approach narrative artifacts in three steps: 1) as representations; 2) ones that typically make sense of what they represent; and 3) as products of intentions. Second, many philosophers draw the line between fictional and non-fictional narratives based on the claim that the contents of fiction are intended to be imagined by the audience – this is what CEU eTD Collection defines fiction irrespective of truth and falsity. In contrast, I argue that fictional narratives cannot be true, and I consider some difficult cases which would warrant the opposite view. I maintain that ‘being fictional’ and ‘being true’ are incompatible for narratives. László Kajtár: Doctoral Thesis iii Third, it is contentious whether art is an appropriate vehicle of learning, or, whether it has ‘cognitive value’ that is significant in an aesthetic way. My argument is that the most important lessons of art are not truths in propositional form, rather, art provides one with experiential knowledge, with knowing, to a degree, what it is like to be in certain situations. Fourth, while narrative artworks have the capacity to evoke certain experiences (and thus provide experiential knowledge), it is not clear what the difference is between experiences as lived and experiences as evoked by narrative artworks. I defend the view that, in contrast to experiences as lived, experiences evoked through empathy by narrative artworks are meaningful in a specific way. Fifth, philosophers have long been debating whether artists’ intentions should play a role in interpreting artworks. In this chapter, I carve out a qualified position: when it comes to what story a narrative artworks tells, one should refer to intentions, however, one need not do so when understanding what themes are developed by the work or when examining the functions of details that contribute to developing these themes. Sixth, many claim, not just in philosophy but in psychology as well, that narratives are important when it comes personal identity. Some think they constitute one’s ‘self’ or, at the least, make actions and events in one’s personal history intelligible. I argue for a different view: narratives are important for personal identity because they communicate, intentionally and unintentionally, who one is, and they provide access to self-knowledge and opportunity for self-shaping. Seventh, as mentioned, philosophers tend to think that fictional narratives are distinguished by their prescribing the imaginings of their contents. In this last chapter, the position developed is that CEU eTD Collection certain kinds of imagination are necessary for both creating and comprehending narratives irrespective of their fictionality. All in all, the thesis provides much needed conceptual clarifications, and it develops novel and original arguments and views regarding central topics in the study of narrative, making the study of narrative relevant beyond aesthetics for other areas of philosophy. It considers the concept of time and how it is represented and altered through writing in fiction literature. Additionally, the role of time and non-linearity is discussed from the perspective of the emotional effects it induces rather than linear, chronological narratives. With the use of qualitative research, international literature, and an original creative writing segment, this theory is analyzed. 3 Introduction Stories, in their most basic interpretation, are created by isolating a sequence of events and presenting them to an audience. How a story is written noticeably impacts the way it will be received by readers since it considers characters, setting, tone, time, and several other aspects to make it whole. While every detail allows a story to raise various interpretations or perceptions, the importance of time is often overlooked compared to other aforementioned qualities which are deemed more important. From this perspective, time is mostly considered a means through which the story is told, but rather, this paper will analyze how the disruption of time in a story is capable of altering how the story is perceived and emphasizing certain aspects.

Narrator as collective ‘we’: The narrative structure of “A Rose for Emily.” English Language & Literature Teaching, 17(4), 141-156. This study purposes to explore the narrative of fictional events complicated by a specific narrator, taking notice of his/her role as an internal focalizer as well as an external participant. In William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily," the story of an eccentric spinster, Emily Grierson, is focalized and narrated by a townsperson, apparently an individual, but one who always speaks as 'we.' This tale-teller, as a first-hand witness of the events in the story, details the strange circumstances of Emily’s life and her odd relationships with her father, her lover, the community, and even the horrible secret hidden to the climactic moment at the end. The narrative 'we' has surely watched Emily for many years with a considerable interest but also with a respectful distance. Being left unidentified on purpose, this narrative agent, in spite of his/her vagueness, definitely knows more than others do and acts undoubtedly as a pivotal role in this tale of grotesque love. Seamlessly juxtaposing the present and the past, the collective ‘we’ suggests an important subject that the distinction between the past and the present is blurred out for Emily, for whom the indiscernibleness of time flow proves to be her hamartia. The focalizer-narrator describes Miss Emily in the same manner as he/she describes the South whose old ways have passed on by time.

    THE ROLE OF NARRATIVE STRUCTURE IN THE TRANSFER OF IDEAS THE CASE STUDY AND MANAGEMENT THEORY ANN HARLEMAN STEWART The case study report-which I will call simply the case study-constitutes a special form of scientific and technical writing. It is widely used but not well understood. Intuitively we know that a case study communicates information and that it is a kind of story. But how does it communicate? And what kind of a story is it? Discourse analysis offers a methodology that reveals the linguistic and textual strategies employed by the case study and allows us to formulate explicitly the conception of it that we hold intuitively. This essay exam- ines the case study as discourse-as the text involved in an act of com- munication that takes place within a particular speech community. I have chosen to examine the case study as it is used in teaching management theory. Illustrative texts come from casebooks in the field, selected in con- sultation with Boston University School of Management faculty, which show a representative range of subject matter, pedagogical principles, and style. A discourse analytical approach, by its very nature, demands particu- larization: unless the context is fully specified, it is impossible to view a text as discourse. Hence the analysis here focuses on one particular kind of case study used in one particular kind of activity. It is offered as a model for a discourse analytical approach to the case study in other areas. North, Chair Weather ex Machina charts a pattern of the weather as a plot device in the twentieth-century novel, where its interventions have been overlooked and understudied. According to the prevailing critical narrative of the topic, the ubiquitous and overwrought weather that characterizes the notoriously dark and stormy novels of the nineteenth century all but disappears in those of the twentieth, its determinative force in fiction diminishing with the advancement of a science that secularized the skies. This dissertation pushes against that narrative, arguing that is precisely because modern meteorology seemingly stripped the weather – so long assumed to be divinely sourced – of its mythological associations that the trope becomes available for co-opting as the makeshift deus ex machina of the modern novel: the believable contrivance that, in functioning deterministically while appearing aleatory, replaces the providentialism of the nineteenth-century novel and resolves the crisis of causality in the twentieth-century plot. For E.M. Forster, whose works are marked by an anxiety about formlessness and a belabored adherence to causal chains, the weather becomes a divine scapegoat, its inculpation imposing a predictable but passably accidental order onto his plots.

In the course of this examination several famous narra- tive-based philosophers are examined such as Plato, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Sartre, Murdoch, Johnson, and Camus. These practitioners used the indirect method to make plausible to readers the vision that they were presenting. This article also offers some constraints in this process.     PO PULAR HINDI CINEMA: NARRATIVE STRUCTURES AND POINTS OF CONTINUITY WITH THE TRADITION Abstract – In the course of its long history, Indian cinema, and in particular popular Hindi cinema, has seen an extraordinary evolution while retaining, from the thematic and structural point of view, certain specific characteristics and thereby successfully resisting the cultural imperialism of Hollywood. Continuity with the Indian cultural tradition can be seen in manifold aspects, and it is in fact by analysing these connections that we can highlight and interpret the main characteristics of this singular cinematic world. Popular Hindi cinema is often accused of offering a patchy sort of narration with total lack of realism, repetitive plots and critical fire is, above all, levelled at the typical song and dance sequences constantly cropping up and interrupting the narrative flow. These are, howev- er, fundamental characteristics peculiar to popular Hindi cinema, and should be analysed in the light of that tradition. From its very beginnings, Indian cinema has drawn inspira- tion from the styles, aesthetics and semiotics of a great variety of cultural forms that have followed one upon another in India over the centuries, forming a vast cultural heritage. In this respect, it also proves interesting to look back to the roots of the Indian cultural tradition, beyond the stage of mediation and transposition in written form, seeking out the elements of continuity between the narrative structures of popular Hindi cinema and those typical of oral narration.     PHILOSOPHY OF ACTION AND THEORY OF NARRATIVE1 TEUN A. VAN DIJK 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1. The aim of this paper is to apply some recent results from the philosophy of action in the theory of narrative. The intuitive idea is that narrative discourse may be conceived of as a form of natural action description, whereas a philosophy or, more specifically, a logic of action attempts to provide formal action descriptions. It is expected that, on the one hand, narrative discourse is an interesting empirical testing ground for the theory of action, and that, on the other hand, formal action description may yield insight into the abstract structures of narratives in natural language. It is the latter aspect of this interdisciplinary inquiry which will be em- phasized in this paper. 1.2. If there is one branch of analytical philosophy which has received particular at- tention in the last ten years it certainly is the philosophy of action. Issued from classical discussions in philosophical psychology (Hobbes, Hume) the present analy- sis of action finds applications in the foundations of the social sciences, 2 in ethics 3 1This paper has issued from a seminar held at the University of Amsterdam in early 1974.
