  • Dictionary of Westerns in Cinema
PERFORMING ARTS • FILM HISTORICAL DICTIONARY OF Historical Dictionaries of Literature and the Arts, No. 26 VARNER When early filmgoers watched The Great Train Robbery in 1903, many shrieked in terror at the very last clip, when one of the outlaws turned toward the camera and seemingly fired a gun directly at the audience. The puff of WESTERNS smoke was sudden and hand-colored, and it looked real. Today we can look back at that primitive movie and see all the elements of what would evolve HISTORICAL into the Western genre. Perhaps the Western’s early origins—The Great Train DICTIONARY OF Robbery was the first narrative, commercial movie—or its formulaic yet enter- WESTERNS in Cinema taining structure has made the genre so popular. And with the recent success of films like 3:10 to Yuma and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, the Western appears to be in no danger of disappearing. The story of the Western is told in this Historical Dictionary of Westerns in Cinema through a chronology, a bibliography, an introductory essay, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on cinematographers; com- posers; producers; films like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Dances with Wolves, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, High Noon, The Magnificent Seven, The Searchers, Tombstone, and Unforgiven; actors such as Gene Autry, in Cinema Cinema Kirk Douglas, Clint Eastwood, Henry Fonda, Jimmy Stewart, and John Wayne; and directors like John Ford and Sergio Leone. • Legends of the West
1 This novel is dedicated to Vivian Towlerton For the memories of good times past 2 This novel was written mostly during the year 2010 CE whilst drinking the fair-trade coffee provided by the Caffé Vita and Sizizis coffee shops in Olympia, Washington Most of the research was conducted during the year 2010 CE upon the free Wi-Fi provided by the Caffé Vita and Sizizis coffee shops in Olympia, Washington. My thanks to management and staff. It was good. 3 Excerpt from Legends of the West: Spotted Tail said, “Now, let me tell you the worst thing about the Wasicu, and the hardest thing to understand: They do not understand choice...” This caused a murmur of consternation among the Lakota. Choice was choice. What was not there to not understand? Choice is the bedrock tenet of our very view of reality. The choices a person makes are quite literally what makes that person into who they are. Who else can tell you how to be you? One follows one’s own nature and one’s own inner voice; to us this is sacrosanct. You can choose between what makes life beautiful and what makes life ugly; you can choose whether to paint yourself in a certain manner or whether to wear something made of iron — or, as was the case with the famous Cheyenne warrior Roman Nose — you could choose to never so much as touch iron. In battle you choose whether you should charge the enemy first, join the main thrust of attack, or take off on your own and try to steal his horses.

  • List of Approved Six-Guns As of March 20Th, 2018
Cowboy Fast Draw Association P.O. Box 5 – Fernley, NV 89408 (775) 575-1802 [email protected] / www.cowboyfastdraw.com List of Approved Six-Guns As of March 20th, 2018 The following “List of Approved Six-Gun” is a guide for members to use as a reference when acquiring guns to be used in CFDA events. With all of the new brands and models being introduced and marketed by both manufacturers and importers intended for use in Cowboy Action & Mounted Shooting, it presents a challenge for both newer and veteran members of the CFDA. CFDA’s gun and holster rules tend to be more restrictive than other western-based shooting sports, due to the general sport of Fast Draw’s 60+ year history. Those of us who have both studied and experienced how, in a competitive environment, even modest initial modifications can lead to an endless chain of extreme innovations. All sporting organizations must curb extreme innovations that threaten the very integrity of the principles upon which their sport is based. This is especially important to the Cowboy Fast Draw Association that is based upon time period equipment, and the Romance and Legend of the American Old West. Defining Faithful Reproduction CFDA names a number of period firearms within our rules, and then adds, “and ‘faithful reproductions’ thereof”. We understand that just about all of our members would not shoot an actual authentic and historical firearm in our competitions. It would be both expensive and hard upon the firearms that were actually produced in the 1800s. Therefore, almost all six-guns used in competition are reproductions of the time period, but also due to competitive marketing, they may not be “faithful reproductions”.

EQUIPMENT OF THE TOP SHOOTERS How often have you sat through an awards banquet and watching class winners and overall winners come up to accept their awards and wonder to yourself: “What equipment are they using and who did the work?” I wondered this myself and thought this would be the perfect time to find out. In this section you will find a list of accomplishments, equipment, gunsmiths, and leatherworkers used by some of the top shooters currently participating. At the end of the book there is a section called “Resources” where contact information can be found. CFDA GunslinGer’s GuiDelines 6th EDITION & CFDI International Rules COPYRIGHT 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009, and January 2010 © Cowboy Fast Draw Association, LLC All Rights Reserved Effective January1, 2010 To All of Our Members It is with great pride that we publish this edition of the Cowboy Fast Draw Associa- tion’s Gunslinger’s Guidleines. This is the 6th Edition of our rules and procedures, but this publication is more than that. It is an attempt to put everything in one place so that our mem- bership can find the information that they need. Whether it is finding the right equipment to compete with, learning the rules, becoming the best competitor they can be, organizing and building a successful club, learning how to help as a Range Officer, or just enjoying this sport to the maximum you can; there is a lot of information here. If you can’t find it here, you can contact Mississippi Marshal at our Membership Office at 208-287-0971 or you can contact me, 775-575-1802, we’ll do our best to help you. Each year at our World Championship we have a Marshal’s Muster. Every CFDA Affiliated Club has a U.S. Marshal, they are not only their representative to CFDA, but they are also CFDA’s representative to their club. We have an agenda each year and the U.S. Marshals give their input into proposed rule changes. We make very few competitive rule changes, but we do seek to define and refine them. We also get input from them on CFDA Policies regarding club relationships, awards, points, and a host of other subjects.
