For example, it has become quite common to render a name like “Eusebius,” despite its well-known classical form, as “Evsebios,” to conform to proper Greek phonetics. The artificial classical transliterations we have at times kept (e.g., “Maura,” or, phonetically, “Mavra”), when the Saints are less widely known. How- ever, we would warn readers that the artificial Erasmian rendering of these names should not be followed by Orthodox Christians in pronunciation. The correct pronunciation of these Saints’ names is maintained not only in modern Greek, but also in the Slavic forms of the names. This choice reconciles two traditions, one linked to the Syrian Orthodox Church tradition, which begins the liturgical year on the first Sunday of November (after All Saints Day), and the other according to an ancient Western non- Roman custom. It presents the Saints of the Universal Church as well as the principal Saints who have illuminated the history of the Celtic Orthodox Church. The Liturgical year opens before us as a permanent invitation to deepen our spirituality. The calendar answers, “present,” to the call to deepen our faith in Christ Jesus. The Sunday and feast-day readings are an inheritance of many centuries that belongs to our spiritual heritage. The liturgical cycle was developed over a period of time and set up by our Fathers under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. It is both a divine and human work, providentially proposed to our generation, in order that we may rediscover our spiritual roots in a world that is becoming more and more dechristianized. In this sense this calendar is prophetic for, drawing from ancient Western sources from before the Carolingian reforms, it is surprisingly suited to our times. This appears very clearly when we let ourselves be guided by this grouping together of feasts and readings that give rhythm to our daily life.

But while we live this lot in exile, while we belong to this Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, I repeat again, let us thank the Lord for this and try to be true to Her in every way. Faithfulness to the Truth in Sermons and Teachings of His Eminence Metropolitan Philaret (Vol. 1). Introduction On Sunday 21 November 2010, all churches of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOR) commemorated the twenty-fifth anniversary of the repose of Metropolitan Philaret (Voznesensky), her third First Hierarch. Metropolitan of ROCOR, he was also a priest of the much-suffering Patriarchal Church for sixteen years between 1945 and 1961, and so is a bond of unity between the two parts of the Russian Orthodox Church. Moreover, he also represents hope for the future of Orthodoxy in China, where he lived for over forty years. A priest for thirty-one years and a bishop for twenty-two years, he is venerated by many as a holy man. Indeed, there are those who believe that one day, just like St John of Shanghai, he will be canonised by the whole Russian Orthodox Church, both in New York and in Moscow. We know that within ROCOR a service has already been composed to him and there are those who are now collecting testimonies about him. Let us look at his life and achievements.

Delehaye), arose in the Second Temple Jewish culture with the books such as Judith or Esther. Later, in Christian hagiography, it has always been a productive genre. Nevertheless, in tenth century Byzantium, it reaches a new level: it becomes anthological. Such works of the tenth century as Barlaam and Ioasaph, the Life of St Andrew the Fool, the Life of St Basil the Younger contain enormous quantities of mate- rial of various origin and dates — such as anthologies of didactical stories, Christian apologies, catecheses, apocalyptics, and so on. The resulting texts, having a loose structure to a great extent independent from the plot, became compendia of corresponding knowledge for centuries. Indeed, they are still novels, but of a specię c kind: I would dare to say, les romans anthologiques. Such novels accumulate a great variety of earlier sources, sometimes very early and unique (e. g., the Apology of Aristide in Barlaam and Ioasaph). This is certainly enough reason to consider these novels as interesting also for all those who are seeking for sources from the pre-tenth century Christian tradi- tion, including the early Christian period.

    THE VIRGIN MARY IS AN EVER-VIRGIN On March 17, 2015, Ben Witherington III, professor of New Testament Interpretation at Asbury Theological Seminary in Kentucky, during an interview with CNN made the following statement: "The New Testament says nothing about Mary being a perpetual virgin, it says she virginally conceived Jesus, and it certainly implies that she went on to have more children after that, and his brothers and sisters are in fact his brothers and sisters." We are saddened to witness that this professor and New Testament "theologian" had nothing more edifying to speak of, such as the divinity of Christ, or the Resurrection of Christ, or the brilliance of the Christian Faith, in order to strengthen the faith of his listeners. Rather, he chose to mar, belittle, and speak evil of the most-holy and pure Mother of the Lord Jesus Christ, and, subsequently, to cast doubt into the faith of them who are weak in the faith. Incidentally, it is interesting to note that such "discoveries" are publicized and disseminated by the media almost always during the period of Great Lent, just as most of the Christian world is preparing to celebrate Pascha. The aforementioned Protestant belief expressed by professor Witherington is a misconception that appeared much earlier than the inception of Protestantism in 16th century. Certain groups of Christians as early as the Apostolic era held this same erroneous understanding, which was categorically refuted by the Orthodox Church. Professor Witherington, just as his predecessors, errs "not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God" (Mt. 22:29).
