02 www.vfl .com.au VFL footy is back! It’s been a longer than usual wait, but it’s great to have Peter Jackson VFL football back for season 2015. As we kick off the new season, it is with great excitement that we welcome Channel Seven as our new VFL broadcast partner. The support of such a respected commercial network will increase the exposure of the VFL, help grow the audience and showcase the talented footballers lining up each week in what is undoubtedly the country’s best state-league competition. The recent season launch gave us a taste of what’s ahead for the VFL and provided the opportunity to thank our corporate and community partners, in particular the Peter Jackson and TAC. Their support is crucial to the success of AFL Victoria’s premier competitions, which in turn allows the Victorian talent pathway to prosper and continue to be the benchmark nationally. The strength of this pathway was demonstrated at the end of 2014 with 64 Victorians selected in either the NAB AFL National or Rookie Draft . This result highlighted the quality of the TAC Cup Competition and our Victoria Metro and Victoria Country Academies and saw eight of the top ten players selected in the National Draft hail from Victoria. Four Peter Jackson VFL players also progressed their careers to the elite level with and initially rookie listed and then upgraded to the senior lists of Richmond and respectively. The selection of Frankston’s in the Rookie Draft also ensured the continuation of an outstanding statistic. Of the past nine players to win the Peter Jackson VFL Fothergill-Round Medal, all have now gone on to careers at AFL level. Moving from the TAC Cup into the VFL is very much a genuine pathway, so with that in mind we have combined the VFL and TAC Cup Records into the one publication so that you, the reader, can follow both competitions. In the coming weeks you will see a mixture of content throughout the Record including results, fi xtures and plenty of articles and news items for both VFL (including the Development League) and TAC Cup. The VFL is also proving to be a breeding ground for umpires. 2014 VFL Legendairy Grand Final fi eld umpires Jack Edwards, Nick Brown and each were appointed to their fi rst off icial AFL game aft er being added to the 2015 AFL Field Umpires Panel. Continuing this development of umpires, the AFL Victoria umpiring department will launch a new initiative this year with the VFL player to umpire program. In 2015 we have upwards of 290,000 participants across our various competitions and programs. It is the amazing job done by the hard working volunteers in every corner of the state who drive community clubs and ensure football continues to be the sport of choice for Victorians. There is always so much anticipation leading into Round 1 and the fi rst bounce of the ball. Best of luck to all players and support staff this weekend and a big welcome to all of the family members, friends and supporters.

The man behind the microphone 08 www.vfl .com.au Carmody lives and breathes VFL football and has done so as supporter, player and commentator for the majority of his life. Growing up in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Carmody has fond memories of the competition that was known back then as the VFA, watching it on the tellie in the 80’s. He joined Springvale (now Casey Scorpions) in 1998, doing a VFL apprenticeship in the reserves for two years before debuting with the seniors in 2000. Carmody went on to captain the Scorpions, but was lured to Collingwood in 2008 as the club moved to a standalone model. During his 160 VFL game playing career Carmody developed unfurl a fl ag at Whitten Oval, so I think there will be a really a passion for the media. Many of the new recruits like Tom Miles, Matt Northe and Tom Gleeson have all experienced VFL football, but are keen to cement a regular senior berth at their new club. 16 www.vfl .com.au www.taccup.com.au 17 AFL Academy matches it with VFL teams The 35 AFL Academy Level Two players received their Australian jumpers recently at a dinner for players, their families and AFL recruiters that highlighted the honour it is to represent your country.

The godfather of talent management, AFL National Talent Manager Kevin Sheehan reinforced just how special it was to be a part of the Academy, but pointed out to the group that it wasn’t a ticket straight into an AFL club. “The academy is not about guarantees to get draft ed, it’s about providing opportunities,” Sheehan said. Seizing the opportunity is up to the individuals. He urged the Academy members to learn about being as good as they can be from the people around them. With the likes of Lenny Hayes, Brad Jonhson, Matthew Lloyd, Brad Ottens and Glen Jackovich involved in the program, there is certainly quality people around to learn from. Sheehan is passionate about the Academy and seeing players develop. He shared the story of a young Brenton Sanderson who was one of the fi rst ever players involved in the program. Completing the footy circle of life, Sanderson is now the head coach. Sanderson, who previously coached the Adelaide Crows, has been impressed by the traits shown by the Academy players he has worked with so far. He told the dinner that there were future AFL captains amongst the group. He emphasised the Academy culture which focuses on team fi rst football and the importance of being part of the team, and urged the players to make sure that they enjoy their football. Aft er travelling to and playing in countries all over the world, the Academy has brought their games back to the grass roots of football, suburban Melbourne, playing against VFL teams. NAB AFL ACADEMY 3.1 5.3 6.3 7.3 (45) Two weekends ago the Academy team donned their WERRIBEE 7.1 10.2 15.5 20.7 (127) Australian jumpers and took on Nth Melbourne aligned GOALS Werribee Tigers. 18 www.vfl .com.au The Academy members then spent a week together in a Photo: Arj Giese camp that replicated an AFL week as closely as possible. They spent a day at Melbourne and a day at Richmond football clubs learning about club culture and the inner workings of AFL clubs. This was mixed in with their own daily training sessions and team meetings, a trip to Fox Footy to watch the fi lming of AFL360 and time dedicated to study given most are still at school. Last weekend the youngsters fi nished off their camp in style, running out on to the MCG to take on Northern Blues in a curtain raiser match to Richmond v Western Bulldogs. Putting everything into practice that they had learnt during the week, the Academy players surprised many with their performance against a Northern Blues list that was full of Carlton listed players. There was a signifi cant improvement from the previous outing against Werribee. While the Blues came away with a 9 point victory, the game left many recruiters excited about the potential of the young men who will feature in the 2015 NAB AFL Draft . Sam Weideman (Eastern Ranges), Grandson of Collingwood great Murray was strong up forward, when he wasn’t kicking goals he was setting them up for his team mates and crashing packs. Jacob Weitering (Dandenong Stingrays) and Darcy Parish (Geelong Falcons) were again standout performers. Sanderson and the Academy staff members will now closely monitor each of the 35 Level 2 Academy player’s progressions throughout the remainder of the year, providing guidance and resources to ensure continuing development.
