Abstract: Valmiki’s Ramayana and most other versions depict Ram as Lord Vishnu’s earthly incarnation. But, Amish in his “Scion of Ikshvaku” has completely humanised not merely Ram but also the environment in which he is born. Ayodhya is in shambles and is rife with court intrigues. Born to the displeasure of his own father, Dasharath, and disliked by both the elite and the masses of Ayodhya, Ram faces the hurt and humiliation stoically and yet wins over everyone’s hearts. He prepares himself for shouldering the responsibility that Guru Vasishtha predicts will ultimately fall on him. Amish exploits this milieu to provoke debate on current issues, ideologies, schools of thought and perspectives, challenges and dilemmas regarding political views, the role of the State, law, crime and punishment, the caste system, women’s empowerment and environmental conservation in a brilliant manoeuvre making it more relatable to contemporary times.

  • Post Colonial Perspective on Raavan in Amish Tripathi's
Post colonial Perspective on Raavan in Amish Tripathi’s Scion of Ikshvaku and Sita: Warrior of Mithila PRABU S Ph.D., Research Scholar, Department of English, Annamalai University, [email protected] Abstract Myth teaches the philosophical and the moral values to the people. The myths connect the modern men with the ancients. The myths have the same concept in all the languages and it has a protagonist and a villain. A man who did the good things to the people presented as Vishu or God and the man who did bad things to the human portrayed as the demon or Asura. The Vedic literature argues that each and every soul bears the good characters and a man can be forgivable if he surrenders himself totally to the Gods. If Vedic literature is right then Raavan would have been portrayed as the good man because he surrendered himself to Lord Shiva. The valour of Raava revealed when he defeated the king of Saptha Sindhu, Dashrath even the seventh Vishnu Rama found difficult to defeat Raavan. Valmiki presented Ram as Vishnu even though he was weaker than Raavan. Ram was saved three times by Lakshman. Amish Tripathi has portrayed Raavan as the strongest man than Lord Ram. Further, he presented Ram had born when Raavan had defeated the armies of his father. The armies of Dhasrath won all the dynasties of India by his immense power but being an ordinary man in Dhasrath’s dynasty Raavan won the armies of unconquerable Dhasrath. Women are the keystone of every civilization’s arch. Some of the best ways to recognize and appreciate the essence of a society, and to acknowledge its limits, is to research the role and status of women within it. Women characters by Amish Tripathi are educated, strong, brave, and courageous, enjoying equality in all parts of society. They do extremely well at war techniques, medicine and administration. In the patriarchal world where women are barely audible, Amish attempts to give the tacit, subdued and stereotypical women their voices in the hope of improvement in the entire social mindsets. This paper is an attempt to analyse the delineation of women in the first book of the Ramchandra series, The Scion of Ikshvaku and how Amish peeps through the window called feminism interpreting the various women characters in the selected literary work.
