Heilicher students already participate in inquiry-based projects in many curricular areas. In the future, they will have even more opportunities to learn how to ask good questions and experiment to make discoveries in all subjects. Here are just a few examples of how Heilicher has begun to implement the STEAM approach. The challenge was to “build a stable sled that goes the farthest.” They applied their knowledge of friction, gravity, weight, and other concepts from their science unit, and then tested each sled on a snowy hill. Students worked together to rethink and rebuild the sleds based on their new learning. INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING HAS BEEN ALIVE AND WELL IN JUDAISM FOR MILLENNIA. As Klal Yisroel continues to mourn the loss of the Novominsker Rebbe, Rabbi Yaakov Perlow ztvk’l, Rosh Agudas Yisroel, chaverim of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah and family members offered deeply emotional divrei hesped for a leader who was a major guiding force for Torah Jewry in America for decades. With state and local laws still in effect prohibiting public gatherings, maspidim addressed an empty beis medrash at Yeshivas Novominsk, an audience of nearly 60,000 listening through teleconference and livestream as the Novominsker was remembered as Klal Yisroel’s Rebbe. Normally echoing with exuberant sounds oftalmidim learning Torah, the yeshiva’s stark emptiness was yet another painful reminder of the present eis tzarah that has devastated our community. Throughout the over two hour-long azkarah, Rabbi Perlow was lauded for his unwavering devotion to Klal Yisroel, somehow stretching the hours of each day so that he could immerse himself in his learning and still give his undivided attention to the many organizations and individuals who sought his guidance. In a pre-recorded segment, Rabbi Shmuel Kamenetsky, Rosh HaYeshiva, Talmudical Yeshiva of Philadelphia, described the Rebbe as a “yochid b’yisroel” who cared so deeply for others that their needs became his. No communal issue was deemed too large, too small, or beyond the Novominsker’s realm of expertise, his sage counsel steering Klal Yisroel through turbulent waters when communal institutions such asbris milah, shechitah and yeshiva curriculums were threatened by public officials.

Starting on December 16th in Melbourne, Australia and moving on days later to Mexico City, the Global Siyum HaShas of Daf Yomi began a month-long trek across the planet, igniting an unprecedented passion for Torah in every city, at every siyum. Throughout North America, Europe, Australia and Israel, well over 500,000 people participated in multiple siyumim and like the mountaintop flames in Mishnaic times that signaled the coming of Rosh Chodesh from one locale to another, the torch of Torah circled the globe, setting hearts and souls on fire. Rav Meir Shapiro’s vision of a daily commitment to learning bringing Klal Yisroel together came to life like never before at the makom Torah that he founded in Poland in 1930, with the Siyum HaShas returning on January 1st to its birthplace, Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin. Inscribing another memorable page in the annals of history on the same day were epic siyumim at MetLife Stadium and Barclays Center, with thousands more flocking to Daf Yomi celebrations in Jerusalem and other locations. In the days that followed, the flames of Torah blazed an impassioned trail from the Western Hemisphere eastward, each of the ebullient Siyumei HaShas transcending time and space as they united in-person participants with hundreds of thousands of livestream viewers under a banner of Torah that spanned both continents and generations.
