  • With Just One Masechta Left to Global Siyum Hashas, a Call from Lublin to Encourage Greater Daf Yomi Participation
With Just One Masechta Left to Global Siyum Hashas, A Call from Lublin to Encourage Greater Daf Yomi Participation October 25, 2019 by Sandy Eller Video of the Siyum Seder Kodshim. View the full video of the event here. What began in Lublin has returned to Lublin, as divrei bracha delivered in honor of the penultimate siyum of the 13th Daf Yomi cycle emanated from a place whose walls still echo with the kol Torah of pre-war Poland, Rav Meir Shapiro’s Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin. With just over two months remaining until klal yisroel’s global celebration of Torah unfolds at MetLife Stadium on January 1st, 2020, Daf Yomi fever is at an all time high and there could be no better place to celebrate the completion of Seder Kodshim than Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin, Poland, where the first two Siyumei HaShas were held in 1931 and 1938. Traveling to Lublin to speak in front of the iconic yeshiva’s aron kodesh, Rabbi Meir Tzvi Spitzer, Rosh Mesivta at Yeshivas Mir Yerushalayim, described the siyum on Seder Kodshim as a major milestone that will inspire countless individuals to expand the scope of their limudim, sparking additional siyumim as the countdown towards the 13th Global Siyum HaShas of Daf Yomi heads towards its final celebratory moments. Eloquently describing the tremendous kedusha of the yeshiva as the best possible location to daven for the continued growth of klal yisroel’s unprecedented commitment to limud HaTorah b’kvius, Rabbi Spitzer noted that those who study Daf Yomi have been showered with tremendous bracha and siyata dishmaya as they bring Rav Meir Shapiro’s dream to life on a daily basis.

  • Letter from Rabbi Natan Slifkin to Rav Aharon Feldman

Of course this essay was very distressing for me, in light of the many treasured meetings that I have had with the Rosh Yeshivah over the years and in particular the sympathy and solidarity that the Rosh Yeshivah extended towards me during the first eight months of the controversy, when the Rosh Yeshivah told me that the ban on my books was a terrible mistake. While I have numerous points of contention with the essay, for the purposes of this letter I will only focus on the Rosh Yeshivah’s main point – the explanation of Rav Elyashiv’s view of why it is “heretical” to state that Chazal sometimes stated facts about science that are incorrect. The Rosh Yeshivah stated that this view is a minority opinion which has been rejected by most authorities, and that we are obligated to follow the majority. My Rebbeim dispute the notion that a minority opinion in hashkafah may not be adopted, except perhaps where the issue is both one of ikarei ha-das and ruled upon in one direction in the Gemara (as per the last teshuvah of the Chasam Sofer in Yoreh De’ah ). But I will not focus on that point here.

For the most part, it ignores the doctrines, faith, and practices of Orthodox Jews, and barely touches upon synagogue hie, which is the most meaningful expression of American Orthodoxy. It is hoped that the reader will find here some appreciation of the vitality of American Orthodoxy. Earlier predictions of the demise of 11 am indebted to many people who assisted me in making this essay possible. More than 40, active in a variety of Orthodox organizations, gave freely of their time for extended discussions and interviews and many lay leaders and rabbis throughout the United States responded to a mail questionnaire. A number of people read a draft of this paper. I would be remiss if I did not mention a few by name, at the same time exonerating them of any responsibility for errors of fact or for my own judgments and interpretations. The section on modern Orthodoxy was read by Rabbi Emanuel Rackman. The sections beginning with the sectarian Orthodox to the conclusion of the paper were read by Rabbi Nathan Bulman. Criticism and comments on the entire paper were forthcoming from Rabbi Aaron Lichtenstein, Dr. Marshall Ski are, and Victor Geller, without whose assistance the section on the number of Orthodox Jews could not have been written.

His writings can be found in various rabbinic and popular journals, including Hakira, Ohr Yisroel, Nehoroy, Nitay Ne’emanim, and on Aish, Times of Israel, Torah Links, Seforim Blog, and elsewhere. His writings are rejected as often as they are accepted, and the four books he is currently working on will likely never see the light of day. “I’d rather laugh[2] with the sinners than cry with the saints; the sinners are much more fun.”[3] Fortunate is the man who follows not the advice of the wicked, nor stood in the path of the sinners, nor sat in the session of the scorners. Accordingly, they are no different than other dissident movements throughout our history that have rejected these basic tenets. We therefore inform the public that in our considered opinion, “Open Orthodoxy” is not a form of Torah Judaism (Orthodoxy), and that any rabbinic ordination (which they call “semicha”) granted by any of its affiliated entities to their graduates does not confer upon them any rabbinic authority. May the Almighty have mercy on the remnants of His people and repair all breaches in the walls of the Torah, and may we be worthy to witness the raising of the glory of Hashem and His sacred Torah.

Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah Confront Growing Challenges to Religious Freedom January 6, 2021 Photo credit: Cédric Puisney from Brussels, Belgium, CC BY 2.0 <https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0>, via Wikimedia Commons “It starts with shechita (ritual slaughter), continues withmila (ritual circumcision), and then they start to close down Orthodox Jewish schools,” so asserted Chief Rabbi of Moscow Pinchas Goldschmidt in addressing a meeting of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah (Council of Torah Sages), senior rabbinic governing board of Agudath Israel of America. Rabbi Goldschmidt was appealing to the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah for their, and Agudath Israel’s, assistance in galvanizing support to fend off growing challenges to Jewish religious life in Europe. As current President of the Conference of European Rabbis, Rabbi Goldschmidt has been extremely active on all matters pertaining to the rights and well-being of the 1.5 million Jews – 90% of whom affiliate with Orthodoxy – living on the European continent. Rabbi Goldschmidt’s presentation to the senior rabbinic leaders focused on the dangers, in both short and long terms, of the recent decision of the European Union’s Court of Justice to allow member countries to ban the practice of ritual slaughter under Jewish and Muslim dietary laws. The case originated in Belgium, where nearly two years ago laws were passed in the Flanders and Wallonia regions that require stunning prior to slaughter, effectively prohibiting shechita. These laws placed a substantial burden on religious liberty and on Jewish life in Belgium, as well as on those dependent on Belgian shechita living in other affected European countries.

‘Yikar Sahaduta Dipum Bidatta’ R. Tzvi Hirsch Levin, the Besamim Rosh and the Chida ‘Yikar Sahaduta Dipum Bidatta’ R. Tzvi Hirsch Levin, the Besamim Rosh and the Chida Rabbi Moshe Maimon, Jackson NJ Some of the worst epidemics we have known in our history have indirectly been the catalyst for important contributions by scholars who produced their valuable works under quarantine. Eliezer Brodt has published in these pages considerable lists of such scholarship, from bygone plagues down to the current terrible epidemic, which highlight the vast scope of this literary bounty. I recently came across a very interesting sefer-epidemic connection which I have not seen mentioned yet. This material highlights the contribution of a scholar who was quite probably in quarantine when he produced his indices to a well-known and much debated sefer—R. Saul Berlin’s storied publication, Besamim Rosh. Perhaps most famous (or infamous) for its reputation as the ultimate rabbinic forgery, an exhaustive history of this volume has already been written (and interested readers would do well to refresh their memory with the excellent survey in this blog post by Dan Rabinowitz & Eliezer Brodt; see also Eliezer Brodt’s exhaustive bibliography on the subject in a footnote in Yeshurun, vol. 24, pp. 425-427). My own study of the saga of this sefer during the present COVID-19 quarantine era can hopefully shed light on some striking details pertaining to this account. R. Tzvi Hirsch Levin in defense of Besamim Rosh Those who have followed the rocky history associated with Besamim Rosh will recall the strenuous defense of this sefer penned by R.
