This history makes the Philippines a kind of imperial artifact. Like all nation- states, it is an ineluctable part of a global order governed by a set of shifting power rela tionships. Such shifts have included not just regime change but also social revolution. The modernity of the modern Philippines is precisely the effect of the contradictory dynamic of imperialism. The Spanish, the North American, and the Japanese colonial regimes, as well as their postcolonial heir, the Republic, have sought to establish power over social life, yet found themselves undermined and overcome by the new kinds of lives they had spawned. It is precisely this dialectical movement of empires that we find starkly illumi nated in the history of the Philippines. GALEDECEMBER 2010Ó VOL. 1 NO.N 1 10 PAGES Official publication of the Cavite Studies Center • DE LA SALLE UNIVERSITY-DASMARIÑAS 12th Annual Seminar on Cavite history and culture Disaster,calamity awareness discussed To assess the geographical condition of the province and to single out the preparedness capacity of Caviteños in terms of catastrophe and calamities, the Cavite Studies Center (CSC) convened its 12th annual seminar on history and culture entitled Desastres y Calamidades: Cavite and the Signs of the Times. The event took place at the Aguinaldo Shrine, Kawit, Cavite on September 24. Public school teachers from Kawit and Dasmariñas and local government officials of Kawit, Noveleta, Naic, Ternate, Trece Martires, and Imus attended the seminar. The opening ceremonies Before the lecture proper, Kawit Mayor Reynaldo ‘Tik’ Aguinaldo commended the CSC regarding the importance of holding such activity. This, accordingly, will give the audience the ability to determine the actions to be done once a calamity or a disaster happens. Former Prime Minister Cesar EA Virata stressed that population growth which contribute to environmental and garbage problems is one factor in the occurrence of calamities. He even suggested some measures such as education and concentrated efforts for a cleaner surroundings that Caviteños have to observe in order to lessen the problem. CSC Director Aquino Garcia, on the other hand, delivered the conference overview. THE SPANISH-DEFINED SEPARATISMO IN TAAL, 1895-96: A Prologue to a Revolution by Manuelito M. Recto In 1895, in the town of Taal, province of Batangas, the Spanish local authorities worked hard enough to denounce some of its inhabitants as subversiVe. They defined the objective of the Taal subversives as the promotion and instigation of anti-patriotic ideas and propaganda against religion to inculcate in the minds of the inhabitants of Batangas the existence of a subversive separatist idea. These ''se paratists", led by Felipe Agoncillo and followed by Ramon Atienza, Martin Cabre ra, Ananias Diocno and many others, were persecuted for manifesting outwardly their nurtured ideas whtch were allegedly in complete opposition to the precepts of the Spanish constitution and ecclesiastical Jaws. Episode 1: 1895 Subversion On July 23, 1895, a report was transmitted by the parish priest of Taal, Fr. julian Diez, to his superior, Archbishop Bernardino Nozaleda, regarding the latest occurrence in that town. Here, he said, things had happened as a result of certain doctrines and certain personalities, that his loyalty to religion and his beloved Spain had forced him to write the prelate before anyone else. He stated that on 65 66 ASIAN STUDIES June 24, during the interment of a ::laughter of Felipe Agoncillo at the Taal cemetery, Agoncillo spoke offensive words against Spain and its religion after the parish priest refused to have the corpse buried in an untaxed coffin. Diez attributed to Agoncillo these statements) What I have l8id to you always, (is) that religion is a lie, a despicable farce that we do not have anymore remedy but to swallow it for it was imposed to us by the poorest and most miserable nation of all Europe. -

Philippine history, more especially the historio- graphy of its colonial period, poses some particular problems in serving as the basis from which to fashion an identity suitable to the modern citizens of a nation-state. These problems are not restricted to the Philippines, but the combination of features is certainly specific to the history of that nation and differentiates its historiography from that of others in the region. Attention has long been drawn to the unique geographical location and cultural experi- ence of the islands; indeed D.G.E. Hall even omitted the Philippines from the first edition of his seminal history of Southeast Asia (Hall 1955). But these observations on their own offer no insuperable obstacle to the creation of a national historiography. Far more significant is the lack of appropriate his- torical experiences whose symbolic value make of them suitable rallying points round which a counter-hegemonic and anti-colonial historiography can coalesce and flourish.1 The history of nations is always presented in the form of a narrative, the fulfilment of a project that stretches back over the centuries along which are moments of coming to self-awareness that prove to be decisive in the self- manifestation of national personality (Balibar 1991:86; Bhabha 1990:1). -

José Rizal and Benito Pérez Galdós: Writing Spanish Identity in Pascale Casanova’s World Republic of Letters Aaron C. Castroverde Georgia College Abstract: This article will examine the relationship between Casanova’s World Republic of Letters and its critical importance, demonstrating the false dilemma of anti-colonial resistance as either a nationalist or cosmopolitan phenomenon. Her contribution to the field gives scholars a tool for theorizing anti-colonial literature thus paving the way for a new conceptualization of the ‘nation’ itself. As a case study, we will look at the novels of the Filipino writer José Rizal and the Spanish novelist Benito Pérez Galdós. Keywords: Spain – Philippines – José Rizal – Benito Pérez Galdós – World Literature – Pascale Casanova. dialectical history of Pascale Casanova’s ideas could look something like this: Her World Republic of Letters tries to reconcile the contradiction between ‘historical’ (i.e. Post-colonial) reading of literature with the ‘internal’ or A purely literary reading by positing ‘world literary space’ as the resolution. However, the very act of reflecting and speaking of the heterogeneity that is ‘world’ literature (now under the aegis of modernity, whose azimuth is Paris) creates a new gravitational orbit. This synthesis of ‘difference’ into ‘identity’ reveals further contradictions of power and access, which in turn demand further analysis. Is the new paradigm truly better than the old? Sanders, Dean of Graduate Studies Date ABSTRACT Filipino culture was founded through the amalgamation of many ethnic and cultural influences, such as centuries of Spanish colonization and the immigration of surrounding Asiatic groups as well as the long nineteenth century’s Race of Nations. However, the events of 1898 to 1914 brought a sense of national unity throughout the seven thousand islands that made the Philippine archipelago. The Philippine-American War followed by United States occupation, with the massive domestic support on the ideals of Manifest Destiny, introduced the notion of distinct racial ethnicities and cemented the birth of one national Philippine identity. ILETo * The February 1986 event that led to Marcos's downfall is usually labelled as the "February Revolution" or the "EDSA Revolution." On the other hand, all sorts of analyses have argued to the effect that the "EDSA Revolution" cannot be called a revolution, that it can best be described as a form of regime-change, a coup d'etat, a restoration, and so forth [see Carino 1986]. Yet to the hundreds of thousands of Filipinos from all social classes who massed on the streets that week there seemed to be no doubt that they were "making revolution" and that they were participating in "people power." For the revolution to be, it sufficed for them to throw caution aside (bahala na), to confront the tanks and guns of the state, to experience a couple of hours of solidarity with the anonymous crowd, and to participate in exorcising the forces of darkness (i. e., the Marcos regime). Should the business of naming the event a "revolution" be understood, then, simply in terms of its political referent? Whatever the reality of the processes enveloping them, the crowds on EDSA seemed to readily interpret or locate their experience within a familiar discourse of revolution and mass action. The present essay explores the discursive frame of radical politics from the 1950s up to 1986. I) I hope to explain why "revolution" and "people power" were familiar in 1986, as well as why the imagined "1986 EDSA revolution" also constitutes a departure or break from the Marcos/Communist Party discourse of revolution. -

The location of an artwork reflects how well it upholds academic tradition or rejects that format. Locale determines the amount of bureaucratic control an artist faces and may determine the economic prospects of their work. Therefore, artworks range from literal to symbolic according to the artists’ ability to create their vision without fear of censorship. Objectives: Understand the similarities and differences between works of art. Understand the relationship of art history to other histories. Identify historical events that have contributed to the evolution of the arts. Develop observational abilities in order to critique visual art. Justify personal and non-personal critiques of art. Gain an overall academic awareness through the study of the fine arts. Outcomes: Analyze the relationship between visual art and human rights. Connect human rights to larger social and cultural issues and movements. Understand how artists critique and challenge history and cultural conventions. Analyze the impact that artists have on improving the lives of those around them and society at large. Background Information: Human rights themes in Philippine visual art began in the late 19th century and extend into the present era. Initially, artwork reflected abuses enacted by colonial or foreign powers that were in direct control of the government and military, or were controlling economic and political affairs from afar. Colonialism is deeply embedded in the history and identity of the Philippines and is a controversial topic because many Filipinos want to divorce themselves from this colonial past, while others see the Western world as a positive influence on their culture. -

Following the loss of its Latin American territories in the early 1800s, Spain’s administrative presence became increasingly intrusive and onerous for Filipinos. Forms of opposition varied however, and whilst emerging groups of middle class Filipinos demanded legal and economic reforms, sporadic peasant protests also continued. Initially, leading opponents to Spanish rule rarely supported independence, but by the late nineteenth century it had become clear that Spain was no longer able to contain the recurrent violence and demands for change. The vulnerability of Spanish control had been demonstrated in September 1762, when a hostile British naval squadron appeared in Manila Bay with over a thousand troops onboard. Defending troops from Spain (and the viceroyalty of New Spain) were unprepared and surrendered, having been unaware of Spain’s involvement in the Seven Years War. The British withdrew in 1764, but sporadic Filipino resistance to Spanish rule continued in Ilocos, Pangasinan and Bohol. Filipino grievances in these areas ranged widely from the imposition of the tribute to resentment at friars and attempts at religious control. The British occupation had revealed the need for better revenues to fund the Philippines’ defence. Spain’s economic interests had been largely focused on Manila, which served as an entrepôt for luxury Asian goods. In accordance with Spain’s mercantilist policies, the goods were sent annually by galleon from Manila to Acapulco in New Spain. -
