Chairman, Departmental Committee on Graduate Students Archives OCT 10 1974 ABSTRACT INVESTMENT AND TITHING IN THAI VILLAGES: A BEHAVIORAL STUDY OF RURAL MODERNIZATION Charles Alan Murray Submitted to the Department of Political Science on 10 May 1974 in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Political Science This study analyzes the responses of forty-one Thai villages to moderniza- tion. The village is the unit of analysis. Behaviors or the physical outcomes of behaviors are used as the indicators of response. The objective is to explain why Thai villages vary so widely in the content and quality of daily life. The two major constructs of the study are how much the people in a village have modernized, and how well the village is coping with modernization in terms of maintaining basic governmental functions. The first of these constructs is operationally defined as "investment" -- evidence that villagers in a given community are making efforts to improve their lives by voluntarily risking what they already possess. This is argued to be a behavioral reflection of two psychological hallmarks of personal modernity in peasants: an expanding standard of what is attainable, and acculturation to change as a manageable and generally benificient phenomenon. -

Weezer to Release New Album—Er, Single—After 'Raditude' Chris
Weezer to release new album—er, single—after ‘Raditude’ Chris Slattery 10-21-09 After the release of their new album, titled “Raditude,” rock band Weezer has announced that they will be releasing a new single, separate from the anticipated album. “We’re really excited about this,” said frontman Rivers Cuomo on the band’s website. “We’re trying something no other one’s ever done before.” The last artist to do this was Buddy Holly in 1957. “It may seem like an out-of-the-box idea that no one else has done,” said Cuomo. “But I like to be a troublemaker.” The single’s title is still not known, but reports state that it will be 2 minutes and 11 seconds long, making one of Weezer’s longest songs. The single will be packaged in a standard jewel case with the album artwork consisting of the band standing in front of a yellow background, underneath the band name. Along with the lead single, the CD will also include 9 B-sides. “We don’t expect people to like these other songs,” said Cuomo. “They’re throwaways. I would hardly consider them tracks.” Weezer guitarist Brian Bell added, “Good songs? Why bother?” The single, along with the B-sides will be 8 minutes and 30 seconds total, making it longer than most of Weezer’s previous albums. Pre-orders on iTunes will include a bonus remix by the single’s producer, Timbaland, the self-proclaimed Greatest Man That Ever Lived. “This is the future today,” said Timbaland. “Why put out albums full of decent songs anymore? That was never Weezer’s strong suit anyway. -
