ABSTRACT

PANTAS, NATALIA. (2018). English-to-Korean Code Switching and Code Mixing in Korean Music Show After School Club Episode 191. Yogyakarta: Department of English Letters, Faculty of Letters, Universitas Sanata Dharma. Nowadays, people around the world tend to change and mix their languanges while talking with other people. These phenomena can be called as code switching and code mixing. These activities can be seen in one of Korean Entertaiments, which is music show. is known widely for its ‘K-pop’ or Korean Pop. In this case, South Korea does not adopt English as their daily language. However, in drawing people’s attention broadly, Korean people improve their English language skill. Many Korean people are bilinguals now. For example, the hosts of Korean Music Show After School Club. They use both English and Korean in having a conversation with the guest star. This study focuses on the occurence of code switching and code mixing in the hosts’ utterances of the show. In this thesis, there are two research problems to be analyzed. They are: (1) What types of code switching and code mixing are used in Korean Music Show After School Club?; (2) What are the possible reasons for switching and mixing code in Korean Music Show After School Club? In conducting this thesis, the writer used purposive sampling as the method in collecting the data. The writer only focused on the uterrances of the hosts consisting of code switching or code mixing. Those utterances were considered as the data of this study. In answering the research problems, the writer used Hoffmann’s theory. The first research problem is to know the types of code switching and code mixing used in Korean Music Show After School Club and the second research problem is to discover the possible reasons for switching and mixing in Korean Music Show After School Club. According to the results, the writer found 92 from 784 utterances containing the phenomena of code switching or code mixing. From the analysis, the writer found only 2 from 3 types of code switching and code mixing. There were Intra-Sentential and Inter-Sentential. Emblematic Switching was not found in the hosts utterances. In this study, there were 10 utterances that consisted of both code switching and code mixing. Therefore, the total data for the first research problem were 102 utterances, 74 utterances for Inter-Sentential and 28 utterances for Intra-Sentential. The second research problem had 104 utterances in total because there were 2 utterances consisting two possible reasons for switching and mixing code. Repetition Used for Clarification was the most used possible reason in this show with 48 utterances in total. The other are 47 utterances for Talking about Particular Topic, 4 utterances for Quoting Somebody Else, 4 utterances for Expressing Group Identity, 1 utterance for Being Emphatic about Something, and last, there was no utterance for Interjection.

ABSTRAK

PANTAS, NATALIA. (2018). English-to-Korean Code Switching and Code Mixing in Korean Music Show After School Club Episode 191. Yogyakarta: Program Studi Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Sastra, Universitas Sanata Dharma.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

It is believed that every single person in this world needs to socialize with others at this moment. In order to have an effective interaction, language is absolutely needed. Language is defined as a method for human to communicate to each other, whether it is written or spoken one. There are two aspects of language behavior from a social point of view: first, the function of language in establishing social relationships; and, second, the role played by language in conveying information about the speaker (Trudgill, 2000, p. 2). It is mentioned obviously that language has the function to maintain the social relationship. Consequently, in order to have a good social relationship with others, human beings need to understand the language itself.

Nowadays, people tend to use more than one language in communicating with others. That people are considered as bilinguals. Bilingualism is the practice of alternately using two languages, and the person involved, bilinguals

(Hoffmann, 1991, p. 15). It means that people who use more than one language while conversing are counted as bilinguals and the occurrence of this activity called bilingualism.

It is true that when people talk to each other, they definitely use language or a variety of a language called as code. Code is a term that can be used to refer to any kind of system that two or more people employ for communication

1 PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

2

(Wardhaugh, 2010, p. 84). People can choose their own code in giving their utterances. Sometimes, they switch and mix their languages. These phenomena are called as code switching and code mixing. Both code switching and code mixing consist of two languages in a certain conversation. The example of code switching is: “Seluruh hidupku sudah dipenuhi dengan kebohongan. I do not want any more secrecy”. This is a kind of simple example of code switching. In this example, the speaker uses two different codes which are Indonesian and English.

This example can be considered as code switching because it exists between sentences (Hoffmann 1991, p. 104). The first sentence uses Indonesian while the second one uses English. Meanwhile, code mixing happens in lexical level or word only (Wardhaugh, 1992, p. 106). For example, “Saya mau membeli buah semangka, anggur, apple, nanas, dan lain-lain”. The word ‘apple’ in this utterance is the code mixing from Indonesian into English. It can be seen clearly that code mixing occurs only in word level. The speaker switches and mixes the language from Indonesian into English depending on many possible reasons, for instance, the participant or the situation that can trigger the speaker to talk about some topics.

The phenomena of switching and mixing code are easily seen now in our daily life. It can be in a small interaction between two or more people; social media such as Instagram, Line, Kakao Talk; literary works such as poetry, book; media mass such as newspaper, magazine, advertisement; entertainment such as reality show, talk show, music show, etc. In this research, the writer puts the focus on code switching and code mixing that is seen in a music show. Music show is a PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

3

television program that shows not only about music but also a certain topic that is shared among the participant and guided by a host. The reason why the writer in this research chooses music show as the data is because the phenomena of switching and mixing code are often used in a music show.

In this research, the writer chooses English-Korean as the case of code switching and code mixing. It is known widely that English is an international language or it can be said that English is a lingua franca. A lingua franca is a language which is used as means of communication among people who have no native language in common (Trudgill, 2000, p. 132). Many people from different background culture know how to speak in English. Nowadays, English has become the number one language that is chosen to be used in some occasions. The same thing happens in Korea. English is currently used in Korea since this country is known broadly because of its entertainment. In the world of Korean entertainment, English-Korean code switching and mixing are so easily to be found. It may be spotted in a song and also in television programs especially in a music show. As the researcher mentioned before, Korea is totally recognized because of its entertainment which is often called “K-Pop” or “Korean Pop”.

In this study, the researcher chooses After School Club music show as the source of code switching and mixing data. The writer picks this music show because of some reasons. The first reason is that South Korea is absolutely famous for its entertainment, the K-Pop. Nowadays, people put their interests in K-Pop or other entertainments like dramas, movies and etc. The second reason is because as already mentioned; television program such as music show in Korea has become a PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

4

trending topic worldwide. This After School Club music show is a very well- known show conducted by Arirang TV. Arirang TV is globally known as an international English-language network based in , South Korea operated by the Korea International Broadcasting Foundation. Therefore, in this show, the researcher has found many code switching and code mixing occurrences in conversation between host and the guest stars. This motivates the writer of this study to do a research to expose the types and the reasons for the hosts of this music show After School Club in switching and mixing their codes.

B. Problem Formulation

Based on the background of the study, the writer formulates the problems. The problems can be formulated below:

1. What types of code switching and code mixing are used in Korean Music

Show After School Club?

2. What are the possible reasons for switching and mixing code in Korean

Music Show After School Club?

C. Objectives of the Study

There are two objectives in this research. The first one is to find out the types of code switching and code mixing in Korean Music Show After School

Club. After recognizing the types of code switching and code mixing in that show, these findings of types will help the writer to understand the second problem formulation. Then, the other objective in this study is to discover the possible PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

5

reasons for switching and mixing language in Korean Music Show After School

Club.

D. Definition of Terms

Bilingualism is described as the practice of alternately using two languages and the person involved, bilingual (Hoffmann, 1991, p. 15). This means that people who master two or more languages are considered as bilinguals.

This activity when people talk to each other use more than one codes is called bilingualism.

Code is defined as a system used for communication between two or more parties (Wardhaugh, 2000, p. 98). It means that code or language functions as a tool or a device that can be used by the speaker in communicating with others. Consequently, code is needed in having conversation.

Code Switching is a rapid form of language switching that has the effect which is enabling a speaker to signal two identities at once (Trudgill, 2000, p.

106). It suggests that there is a changing movement from one language to another language in speaking and it also has an effect when the speaker is having a conversation with others.

Code Mixing occurs when conversants use both languages together to the extent that they change from language to the other in the course of a single utterance (Wardhaugh, 1992, p. 106). It explains that code mixing only takes place within a sentence or only in single lexical item. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

In Arirang TV official website, After School Club is defined as the Live

Music Request show for all K-pop (Korean Pop) fans all around the world conducted by two hosts named Eric Nam and Park Jimin. This music show will open video chat sessions weekly through Google Hangouts, , and

Facebook together with the hosts and the guest stars (http://arirang.co.kr, para.1).

This music show also gives chances to the fans all around the world to send messages or ask some requests to the guest stars. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

This chapter gives details about three important parts which are review of related studies, review of theories, and theoretical framework. The first part expands the studies that have been done by some researcher which are similar to this study. In this part, the researcher shows the relation of this study to some researchers which are Luthfiyani’s and Tania’s. The researcher of this study not only examines the undergraduate thesis, but also the journals. The journals that had been reviewed are Ariffin and Husin journal and Luke’s. This part displays the similarities and differences to avoid duplication. Then, the second section is to review the theories which are applied to achieve the goal of this study and lastly theoretical framework describes the contribution of the reviews and theories in solving the problem of the study.

A. Review of Related Studies

Luthfiyani’s thesis which is entitled “Code Switching and Code Mixing on Korean Television Music Show After School Club” shows code switching and code mixing that appear in the same music show as this study which is After

School Club. As mentioned in chapter one, this music show consists of many episodes and every week, this show certainly has different guest star. This study, which is written in 2014, focuses on examining code switching and code mixing that occurs between the hosts named Eric Nam and Hanbyul with the guest star,

Korean Boy Group, EXO. While in this study, the researcher puts the focus on the

7 PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

8

utterances that is switched or mixed by other hosts (Eric Nam and Park Jimin) and guest star (BTS). It means that the data will be different from her study.

The objectives of the study of Luthfiyani’s thesis are to know the types of code switching and code mixing in the show and to discover the influential factors for switching and mixing in the music show named After School Club. In this case, the researcher of this study certainly has similarity and difference with her objectives. This study also is conducted to know the types of code switching and code mixing in that show. Then, for the second objectives of the study, the researcher has different problem to be understood. In this study, the researcher would like to discover the possible reasons for the hosts and the guest stars to switch and mix their language, meanwhile, in Luthfiyani’s thesis, she would like to know the influential factors for switching and mixing code in the show. The other difference can be seen the theories used by Luthfiyani. For those research questions, she uses Holmes theory. Therefore, to avoid plagiarism, this study will discover something new by using the different approach or theory.

Tania’s thesis which is written in 2017 discusses code switching in

Winna Effendi’s novel entitled Unbelievable. Tania’s thesis has different data to be analyzed from this study. It may be seen clearly, Tania uses novel as her data, meanwhile this study uses music show namely After School Club. Tania’s thesis also only focuses on code switching that occurs in the novel, whereas in this study the researcher would like to discover not only code switching but also code mixing. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

9

Tania’s thesis and this study have similarity in the objectives of study. In her study, she would like to recognize the types of code switching and the reason for switching language in chapter three of Unbelievable’s novel by Winna

Effendi. This study also has the same problems to be discovered. Thus, this study will improve Tania’s thesis by using the same approach or theory to answer those problems.

Ariffin and Husin’s research which is entitled “Code Switching and Code

Mixing of English and Bahasa Melayu in Content Based Classrooms: Frequency and Attitudes” discusses code switching and code mixing that occur in classroom context between instructors and students. This research, which is written in 2011, focuses to highlight the frequency of instructor’s code switching or code mixing and both the instructors’ and students’ attitudes towards it.

The data of this study is different from Ariffin and Husin’ research. As already stated above, the data of the study are the interaction between the instructors and students or based on classroom context, while, the data of this study are the code switching and code mixing uttered in the music show After

School Club. The focuses on their study are also different. Arifin and Husin’s research focus on discovering both instructors’ and students’ attitudes towards code switching or code mixing that occur in classroom meanwhile, this study focuses on recognizing the types and the reason for switching and mixing language. Therefore, the writer of this study will discover new ideas by using other theories from this journal. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

10

Luke’s research which is written in 2015 shows code mixing that occurs among Pamonanese in a certain group. This research has similarity and differences towards this study. This journal is similar to this study in the objectives of the study. Both the Luke’s research and this study are trying to know the types and reasons for mixing the language.

In this research that is entitled “The Use of Code Mixing among

Pamonanese in Prata-Ndaya Closed Group Facebook”, Luke only focuses on discussing code mixing in some utterances. It differs from this study that also trying to discuss code switching in some utterances. The data of this study is also dissimilar from the journal. The analyzed data of the journal are taken from the comments that were made by Pamonanese people that belong to a facebook group, whereas, the data of this study are the utterances spoken in the music show which is totally different from Luke’s data. Thus, the writer of this study will discover something new based on the differentdata to be analyzed.

B. Review of Related Theories

1. Theories of Sociolinguistics

Sociolinguistics is defined as a study of the relationship between language and society. This study is interested in explaining why people speak differently in different social context and it also concerned with identifying the social functions of language and the way it is used to convey social meaning

(Holmes, 2001, p. 1). It means that this study is used to analyze the different languages which are spoken by people according to society they belong to. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

11

Wardhaugh (2010) says that sociolinguistics is concerned with investigating the relationship between language and society with the goal being a better understanding of the structure of language and how languages function in communication (p.12).

2. Bilingualism and Bilinguals

Bilingualism is explained as the alternate use of two or more languages by the same individual (Hoffmann, 1991, p. 16). This means that the person is considered as bilingual since the speaker uses two or more codes while having conversation with others.

Bloomfield (1935) defines Bilingualism as the native-like control of two languages (as cited in Hamers, 2000, p. 6). This linguist also explain that being bilingual equals being able to speak two languages perfectly.

These two theories have the same meaning about this term, bilingualism.

Bilingualism is the use of two or more languages by the same speaker or it can be said, bilingual. Therefore, the phenomena of switching and mixing code will occur since the speaker uses two or more languages in communicating with others.

3. Code

Wardhaugh (2010) explains code as the particular dialect or language that a person chooses on any occasion and also a system used for communication between two or more parties (p. 84). It means that a code is a language itself that is used as a device or mediator for having a conversation with others. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

12

As already mentioned, code or language functions as a tool or device for the speaker in having conversation with others. For example, in After School Club live request music show, the hosts will choose their code in delivering their utterances consciously or not. The hosts in the show may use English when they interact to the international fans. On the other hand, they will use when they speak to the guest stars who are absolutely Korean people. Thus, the choice of code is definitely important in delivering some speech or conversing with others.

4. Code Switching and Code Mixing

The term code switching and code mixing have some different definition by the linguists. In this part, this study will give some definition about those terms in order to understand the meaning of them.

Code Switching is a rapid form of language switching that has the effect which is enabling a speaker to signal two identities at once (Trudgill, 2000, p.

106). It means that there is a changing movement from one language to another language in speaking and it also has an effect when the speaker is having a conversation with others.

Another linguist defines code switching as a reference to a situation in which the speaker uses a mixture of distint language varieties as discourse proceeds (Akmajian, 2001, p. 307). This definition means that situation becomes the main point for someone switching their language.

Then, we also have the term code mixing that also occurs along with code switching. Code mixing is also related to code switching. Code mixing PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

13

occurs when conversants use both languages together to the extent that they change from language to the other in the course of a single utterance (Wardhaugh,

1992, p. 106). It explains that code mixing only takes place in a word level within a sentence.

Both the term code switching and code mixing sometimes cannot be distinguished easily. People tend to switch and mix their languages, and it makes hard to be analyzed whether it is being switched or mixed. But, in his book,

Hoffmann explains the differences of code switching and code mixing. The difference between code switching and code mixing can be seen from the occurences. Code switching occurs within phrases or sentences including tags and exclamations at the end of the sentence while code mixing occurs at the lexical level within sentence (1991, p. 104).

As already explained above, the main difference between code switching and code mixing can be seen from the occurrences. Code switching exists in lexical level such as phrases and sentences between sentences. In contrast, code mixing happens in lexical level such as phrases and words within a sentence.

Therefore, the main difference of these two codes can be noticed from the incidence.

5. Types of Code Switching

There are three types of code switching according to Hoffmann (1991, p.

112) that will be desribed below:

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

14

a. Intra-sentential Switches

In Hoffmann’s book entitled An Introduction to Bilingualism, there are three types of code switching. The first one is the intra-sentential code switching.

This type contains switches within a sentence (1991, p. 112). Then, switches occuring at the lexical level within a sentence are reffered to as ‘code-mixes’ and

‘code-mixing’ (1991, p. 104). This means that when two codes are being switched within a sentence, whether it happens in word or phrase level, it can be called as an intra-sentential code switching. The examples are discussed below;

(1) (An English-German bilingual) Play mit water ‘Play with water’ (Hoffmann, 1991, p. 106)

(2) (A spanish-English bilingual) ‘I started going like this. Y luego decía (and then he said), look at the smoke coming out of my fingers’ (Valdes Fallis, 1982, p. 220) At the (1) example, it is an intra-sentential code switching because the change occurs only at word level which is ‘mit’, a German preposition for word

‘with’ in English. The other example can be seen from the (2), the change happens in phrase level. As already mentioned, intra-sentential switching exists in word or phrase level within sentence. It can be seen from these two examples that the occurences exist in word and phrase level. b. Inter-sentential Switches

The second type of switching code is called inter-sentential switching.

This type occurs when there is a switch between sentences (1991, p. 112). It means that the alteration of codes happens between sentences. For example, the PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

15

speaker will tell the story in one code in a sentence. Then, in the next sentence, the speaker will use other codes. Consequently, the codes are switched between sentences. The concrete example will be desribed below;

An English-German-Spanish trilingual: Mother: ‘Na, wie war’s beim Fußball’ (‘How was the football?’) Pascual: ‘Wir haben gewonnen. Unsere Seite war ganz toll. Ich war der (‘We won. Our team was brilliant. I was... ‘) goalie. I stopped eight goals. They were real hard ones. (And turning towards the pan on the cooker he continued) ‘Was gibt’s zu essen? (‘What are we eating today?’) This example is taken from Hoffmann’s book (1991, p. 111) and it explains about the intra-sentential code switching. It can be seen clearly in the example above that there is a change of code between sentences. The first sentence which is told by mother is in German. In the second part, it is still the same; the speaker (Pascual) uses German to reply his mother. But then, he changes his language into English at the next sentence. Lastly, he changes his language to German again. It means that between some utterances in German, there is an English sentence uttered by Pascual. So, from the example, it can be concluded that this is the intra-sentential code switching. c. Emblematic Switching (Tag-Switching)

The last type of code switching is called as emblematic switching or tag- switching. This one occurs when it includes tags and exclamations at either end of the sentence (1991, p. 104). It means that the items such as tags or exclamations serving as an emblem of the bilingual character. (1991, p. 113). The example of this last type will be explained below:

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

(1) A Spanish-Catalan bilingual: ‘Hay cuatro sillas rotas y’ (‘There are four brokern chairs and’) prou!’ (‘that’s enough!’) (Ibid, p. 115)

(2) An adult Spanish-American English speaker: ‘... Oh! Ay! It was embarrassing! It was very nice, though, but I was embarrassed!’ (Silva-Corvalán, 1989, p.185)

These examples show the tag-switching from the items tags (‘prou’) in

(1) example and exclamation (‘ay!’) in (2) example. Therefore, the use of the exclamation words indicates the last type of code switching which is the tag- switching.

6. Reason for Switching and Mixing Code

According to Hoffman (1991, p. 115), there are some reasons for people to switch and mix their languages. Those are: a. Talking about a Particular Topic

Hoffmann says that talking a particular topic may cause a switch, either because of lack of facility in the relevant register or because certain items trigger off various connotations, which are linked to experiences (1991, p. 115). Talking a particular topic means that when two or more people are together, they are talking to each other and it must have a topic to be shared. In sharing or having disscusion, people can easily switch or mix their languages. This is the example of talking about particular topic:

A French-English bilingual: ‘Va chercher Marc (go and fetch Marc) and bribe him avec un chocolat chaud (with a hot chocolate) with cream on top’ (Grosjean 1982) PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

17

Talking about particular topic may cause a switch or mix code. It can be seen from this example, the speaker talks about the particular topic, which is to ask someone to buy some ice cream. From the way that the speaker talks, there are some alteration of code. The speaker mixes his language from French into English for getting ice cream. Therefore, talking about a certain topic can cause a switch or mix code. b. Quoting Somebody Else

According to Hoffmann (1991, p. 116), quoting somebody else means that the speaker uses the original language to quote someone’s utterances. For example, there is a saying told in Indonesian ‘Jas Merah atau Jangan sekali-kali melupakan sejarah’, an English people will not say this statement in English, but they will quote it in the original language which is in Indonesian language. It means that the speaker switch the languages from English to Indonesian only for quoting someone’s utterances. c. Interjection

One of the reasons to switch and mix according to Hoffmann is

Interjection. This reason is described as the words or expressions, which are inserted into sentence to convey surprise, strong emotion, or gain emotion. This is a short exclamation like: Hey!, Oh!, and others. For example, Aduh! I got headache! In that short example, the speaker switch the languages from

Indonesian (Aduh!) into English. d. Expressing Group Identity PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

18

Hoffmann states that code switching can also be used to express group

identity. This means that the speaker switches and mixes their language to show

their group identity or they express that they belong to a certain group. The simple

example of this possible reason can be seen from the interaction of Sanata Dharma

University students. The student who is Javanese (A) will use Indonesian when

this student talks to the other student who is Dayaknese (B). However, this student

will switch her language into Javanese when she communicates with (C) who is

Javanese, too. This interaction shows that the reason to switch code is to express

the group identity. At first, the student (A) uses Indonesian when she talks to (B)

who is Javanese and then switches her code into Javanese to talk to (C) because

the student (A) would like to express her group identity, which is Javanese. e. Being Emphatic about Something

In this part, Hoffmann (1991, p. 116) says that usually, when a person

who is talking using a language that is not his native tongue suddenly wants to be

emphatic about something, that person either intentionally or untintentionally, will

switch from his second language to his first language.

The example of this reason can be seen below:

A Spanish-Catalan bilingual: ‘Hay cuatro sillas rotas y’ (There are four broken chairs and) prou! (that’s enough) (Ibid, p.115) This example above shows that the Catalan word prou! triggers the

empathy towards something, which are the four broken chairs. The speaker

switches the codes because the speaker is being emphatic about the broken chairs.

f. Repetition Used for Clarification PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

19

Hoffmann (1991, p. 116) tells that when a bilingual wants to clarify the speech so that it will be understood more by the listener, the speaker can use both of the languages that he masters in having a conversation with others. The speaker can repeat their utterances in different codes and it is used for clarifying something.

The simple example of this possible reason to switch or mix code is:

An adult Spanish-English Bilingual: ‘Tenía zapatos blancos, un poco, they were off-white, you know’. (Silva-Corvalán 1989, p.185

From this example, it can be seen that the speaker switches his language form Spanish into English to clarify his statement in order the listener could understand the meaning of the sentence.

C. Theoretical Framework

The objectives of this study are to analyze the types of code switching and code mixing and to discover the reasons for switching and mixing code that occur in After School Club music show. The first problem is the identification of the types of code switching and mixing which are shown in the music show. In answering the first problem, the writer uses Hoffmann’s theory to identify the types of code switching and mixing which are found in After School Music Club music show by Arirang TV. This theory is used because it is appropriate for the data which are the transcriptions of the utterances of the hosts in that music show.

Then, after knowing the types of code switching and mixing that occur in

After School Club music show, the researcher will conduct the analysis of the PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

20

reason to switch and mix code. As stated before, the second problem is to analyze the reasons why the speakers at that music show switch and mix the code. In solving this problem, the writer also chooses Hoffmann’s theory to analysis the data to know the reasons to switch and mix code in some utterances. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

A. Object of the Study

The objects or the data of this study were the English-Korean code switching and code mixing utterances which occur in After School Club, a Korean live music request show, by Arirang TV especially in episode 191 which was aired on December 22, 2015. This study only focuses on the utterances of the hosts that were transcribed.

This show was conducted by two hosts. They are Eric Nam and Park

Jimin. In this show, the hosts converse with the special guest star known as BTS or BangTan Sonyeondan. The guest star are South Korea famous boy band consisting of seven members. They are Rap Monster (Kim Nam Joon), Kim Seok

Jin (Jin), Min Yoon Gi (Suga), Jeong Ho Seok (J-Hope), Park Ji Min (Jimin), Kim

Tae Hyeong (V), Jeon Jeong Guk (Jungkook). This boy group not only gets their nation attention but also worldwide’s because of their achievements. One of their international achivements is Billboard Music Awards in 2017 as the “Top Social

Artist” (Yonhap News, 2017, para. 2). Therefore, the popularity of the guest star has the effect to this show especially this episode. It became popular too, it might be seen clearly from the viewers of this live request music show which uploaded on YouTube, it reaches 2,362,485 viewers and 56,526 likes.

As already mentioned, the data were taken from After School Club live request music show especially in episode 191. The data were the English-Korean

20

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

21

code switching and mixing that occured in this episode of the show. The objects were precisely the transcription of the hosts’ utterances containing the phenomena of code switching and code mixing which found in the show. Therefore, words, phrases, and sentences were considered as data for this study. The hosts in this show often switch and mix their codes in words, phrases, and also sentences.

Consequently, those are the linguistic elements that will be analyzed in this research.

B. Approach of the Study

This study used sociolinguistics as the approach, which focused on the switching and mixing code. This approach was employed because the study of switching and mixing code was applied in it. The phenomena of code switching and mixing were used in some utterances by the hosts in this show, therefore sociolinguisctics is the appropriate approach in this study.

Sociolinguistics is the study of language used in society to maintain a relationship. According to Trudgill (2000, p. 2), there are two aspects of language behavior from a social point of view: first, the function of language in establishing social relationships; and, second, the role played by language in conveying information about the speaker. It is mentioned obviously that language has the function to maintain the social relationship. Consequently, in order to have a good social relationship with others, human beings need to understand the language or code. Here, they may switch and mix their language when they speak to each other.

22

C. Method of the Study

1. Data Collection

The data were collected by watching the live request music show After

School Club episode 191. The researcher not only watched the show, but also observed the phenomena of code switching and code mixing uttered by the hosts.

Then, the data were transcribed and categorized whether it was a switching or mixing code.

As already mentioned above, the writer only collected the data from the hosts’ utterances, therefore in this study, the writer used method of sample. Since the code switching and mixing were mostly found in the hosts utterances, the use of sample method was the appropriate one.

In collecting the data, as already stated, the writer took the video from

YouTube. Then, the writer watched the show to make a transcription from it. This transcription was the important thing in this study because it was the data of this study. After transcribing the data, the writer focused only on the hosts’ utterances that contained code switching and mixing. As mentioned before, this study used sample method because of the phenomena of switching and mixing code were mostly found in the hosts’ utterances since they were bilingual people. Then, to know whether it was a code switching or code mixing, the writer identified it by categorizing it into the types of it. After knowing the types, it would certainly led to the reason for switching and mixing code.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

23

2. Data Analysis

In classifying the selected data, the writer made three tables based on

Hoffmann’s theory about code switching and code mixing. These three tables had different focuses. The first table focused on categorizing the types of both codes.

This table concentrated on the types which were Intra Sentential (IAS), Inter

Sentential (IES), and emblematic switching (EM). The selected data would be classified based on the types in this table whether it was intra-sentential, inter- sentential, or emblematic switching. Here is the first table based on Hoffman’s theory:

Table 1. The Types of Code Switching and Code Mixing

The second table concentrated on the reasons to switch and mix codes.

Therefore, the table consisted with the selected data that were going to be sorted whether it was Talking about Particular Topic (PT), Quoting Somebody Else

(QS), Interjection (IJ), Expressing Group Identity (GI), Being Emphatic about

Something (BE), or Repetition Used for Clarification (RC). The table below is the second table based on reasons to switch and mix codes:

Hoffmann’s theory for analyzing all the data that had the phenomena of code switching and code mixing.

CHAPTER IV

ANALYSIS RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

As stated previously, there are two research problems that are going to be analyzed in this study. The first part of this chapter is going to answer the first research problem which is to find the types of code switching and code mixing in

Korean music show After School Club. Discovering the possible reason for switching and mixing code will be answered in the second part of this chapter.

The discussion of each part will be potrayed below.

A. Types of Code Switching and Code Mixing Used in Korean Music

Show After School Club

This study had 784 lines of the utterances of the hosts and the guest stars in this Korean music show After School Club. However, after analyzing those lines, the researcher found that there were 92 utterances which contained the phenomena of code switching and mixing. In this study, there were three types of code switching and code mixing used by the hosts in Korean music show After

School Club. The three types were Intra Sentential, Inter Sentential, and

Emblematic or Tag Switching.

The data of this study were the utterances of the hosts of the show that contained both of the phenomena of code switching and code mixing. After transcribing and analyzing the utterances, the researcher found that there were 92 utterances that showed the phenomena of code switching or code mixing.

26 PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

27

However, there were 10 utterances that contained both of switching and mixing code. Therefore, there were 102 utterances in total. In order to know the major type of code switching and code mixing that were used, the reseacher provided a table that consists of the three types of code switching and code mixing that occured in Korean music show After School Club. The result of the types of code switching and code mixing can be seen in the table below:

Table 4. The Results of The Occurrence of Code Switching and Code Mixing

in Korean Music Show After School Club

No. The type of code switching Number of each type

1. Intra-Sentential 28

2. Inter-Sentential 74

3. Emblematic Switching 0

Total 102

As it can be seen from the table above, the major or dominant type used by the hosts in Korean music show After School Club was Inter-Sentential

Switching. The number of the data in this type was 74 utterances. In the second position, there was Intra-Sentential Switching with 28 utterances. Unfortunately, in this Korean music show After School Club, the occurrence of Emblematic

Switching did not exist. Therefore, this type would not be discussed in the next part. In the next discussion, the two types that were found in the show would be explained intensely.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

28

1. Intra-Sentential

Intra-sentential is the phenomenon of code switching that occurs within a sentence. It means the switch can occur in word or phrase level and definitely occur within a sentence. Based on the results that can be seen in the table above, there are 28 utterances using intra-sentential switching These are some evidences of Intra-Sentential switching that happen in Korean music show After School

Club:

Number of data 90 Participants Code Choice Type

BTS members

Utterances

Eric: “Please dance to girlgroup dances, saranghaeyo BTS”. [LOVE] √ √ Ildan Sophie hante.. Hi Sophie!

Translation Saranghaeyo= I love you.

The focus in the utterances above is in the first sentence. This utterance is considered as an intra-sentential switching because it occurs in sentence level and within a sentence. This utterance “Please dance to girlgroup dances, saranghaeyo

BTS” looks like a code mixing because the utterance saranghaeyo only consists of one single word. However, this saranghaeyo, though it stands a single word in

English, but actually it is a sentence since it has a meaning ‘I love you’ in English. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

29

The speaker, Eric switches his codes within a sentence. Clearly, this utterance is considered as an intra-sentential switching.

To make it clearer, here is another table of intra-sentential switching fully equipped with the explanation:

Number of data 248 Participants Code Choice Type

Jimin: ‘Butterfly’ eomcheong johahaneunde Jin [VERY] [LIKE] oppareul tto teukbyeolhideo [BROTHER] [AGAIN] [SPECIAL] manhi johahaneundeyo. [MANY] [LIKE] √ √ (BTS members only listen to this utterances)

Translation: ‘Butterfly’ eomcheong johahaneunde Jin oppareul tto teukbyeolhideo manhi johahaneundeyo= She says she likes ‘Butterfly’ very much and Jin is very special to her.

The table above shows the occurrence of intra-sentential switching. It can be noticed from the way the speaker switches his languages. The speaker, Jimin tells BTS members about the fans messages using English ‘Butterfly’ at the first, then Jimin switches her codes into Korean when she has to tell the fans’ messages to BTS members. In this case, ‘Butterfly’ is one of the songs of BTS or this PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

30

Korean boy group. That is why the speaker, Jimin, uses English to mention BTS song title.

Translation Request-deuleun ije haejuneungeobnida. Geurigo bangtando jalhaejusimyeon urido seonmuleun ttalo deriljunbido isseumnida= We will do the requests now. And we also prepare gifts for BTS if they do good.

Based on the table above, this is an intra-sentential switching. The speaker of this show definitely switch his code. This is the sentence that experiences of intra-sentential switching, “Request deuleun ije haejuneungeobnida”. This sentence means “We will do the request”. The PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

31

speaker switches his code from English to Korean in sentence level “We will do” and within one sentence “Request deuleun ije haejuneungeobnida”. Therefore this utterance is considered as intra-sentential switching. Here is another table that consists an intra-sentential switching:

Jimin: 1K Concert-e ossyeossdago [AT] [COME] haesseumnida. [DID] √ √ (BTS members only listen to Jimin’s utterance)

Translation: 1K Concert-e ossyeossdago haesseumnida= She said she came to 1K Concert.

This utterance above is also considered as intra-sentential switching. This sentence contains both English and Korean. The speaker, Jimin utters ‘1K

Concert’ using English, but she switches her code into Korean within a sentence.

Jimin says “1K Concert-e ossyeossdago haesseumnida”, the Korean sentence in this utterance means “she said she came to...” in English. It can be seen that the alteration of the codes exists within a sentence. Therefore, this utterance is an intra-sentential switching. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Translation Amidereul fall in love with performance

mwongayo?= Which BTS performance

made Army(fans) fall in love?

This utterance is counted as an intra-sentential switching. It can be seen from the utterances. The speaker uses Korean amidereul in the very first place and then he switches it into English in a sentence level “fall in love with performance” and at last he switches again into Korean mwongayo. It means that the language base in this data is Korean and the speaker switches his utterances to

English. It proves that this utterance is an intra-sentential switching.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

33

2. Inter-Sentential

Inter-sentential is the phenomenon of switching code that occurs between sentences. It means that the alteration of code occurs in sentences. Based on the result in the table above, there are 74 utterances that experience Inter-sentential switching. This type is the dominant one because the speaker often uses it in the conversation. This table below is the evidence of the Inter-sentential switching that occurs in Korean music show After School Club:

Number of data 34 Participants Code Choice Type

Translation Yeogi dwie gyesimnida, hanbeon kheuge

please give a big greetings to them.

This table above shows the phenomenon of code switching that occurs between sentences. It can be seen at the first and second sentences, the speaker, PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

34

Eric, uses English. Then, in the third sentence, Eric switches his codes into

Korean. The alteration of the code happens between sentences. Therefore, this is an inter-sentential switching.

Translation Boyeo-juseyo = Please show us.

In this table above, it can be seen that the first sentence is in Korean. The speaker, Eric says boyeo-juseyo that has meaning “Please show us” in English.

Then, in the second sentence, Eric switches his code into English in delivering his speech. Consequently, from these two sentences, it can be said that this is an inter- sentential switching because the change of codes occurs between sentences.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

35

To strengthen two analysis above, here is another explanation of inter- sentential switching:

Number of data 108 Participants Code Choice Type

Translation Dubunda neomu jalhasineyo! = The two

of you are very good!

The table above shows the phenomenon of inter-sentential switching. It can be seen clearly from the sentences. The speaker uses English at the first sentence. Then, he switches his code into Korean in the next sentence. The alteration does not occur within a sentence, but it occurs between sentences.

Therefore, this table is also considered as an inter-sentential switching.

Translation Ibeone, aelbeom-daehan jom... Soljikhi keonseb sogaehago taiteulgog sogae jom hae-juseyo= This time, a little about album... Please introduce to us a little about the title..

This table above shows the similar case from the analysis before. In these utterances, as it can be seen the speaker, Eric uses English in starting the conversation. Then, in the next sentences, the speaker switches his language into

Korean. As already stated above, inter-sentential switching exists between sentences. Therefore, the utterances also show the occurrence of inter-sentential switching. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

Translation: Ttareun membeodeuli mwo= What about the other members?

This table above shows the inter-sentential switching that exists in Eric or the speaker’s utterances. As already seen, the first sentence is uttered in English.

Afterward, Eric switches his code into Korean to ask BTS members’ opinion in the second sentence. As already mentioned, BTS members do not use English as their daily language, that is why the speaker keep switching his codes in order the guest stars will know the situation at that moment. In those utterances, it can be spotted that the changes happen between sentences. Therefore, these utterances can be considered as inter-sentential switching.

B. Possible Reasons to Switch and Mix Code in Korean Music Show

After School Club

After analyzing the data, the researcher found five from six possible reasons to switch and mix code used by the hosts in Korean Music Show After PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

38

School Club. The six possible reasons were Talking about Particular Topic,

Quoting Somebody Else, Interjection, Expressing Group Identity, Being Emphatic about Something, and Repetition Used for Clarification. Unfortunately, one of possible reasons to switch or mix in this show did not exist. It was Interjection.

Therefore, there was no more explanation about this reason.

As already mentioned above, the total of the utterances that had been analyzed were 102 utterances. Nonetheless, in this part, there were some data that had 2 possible reasons to switch or mix code. Consequently, the total number of the possible reasons was 104 utterances. The researcher provided the table of the major of possible reasons used by the speaker in this show followed by the total number of each possible reason. Here is the table of the possible reasons to switch or mix code:

Table 5. The Results of the Possible Reasons in Korean Music Show After

Total 104

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

39

From the table above, it could be seen that the dominant possible reason used in Korean music show After School Club was RC (Repetition Used for

Clarification). The total number of the RC data was 48. Then, PT (Talking about

Particular Topic) took place in the second position with 47 utterances. Afterward, the other number of each possible reason could be noticed in the table above. In the next part, the possible reasons would be discussed one by one with the provided evidences.

1. Talking about Particular Topic

Talking about particular topic is one of the possible reasons to switch and mix code. This means talking about some topic may cause a switch or mix code.

From the data that have been analyzed, the researcher found two kinds of this reason for switching or mixing code. The first one is to emphasize the topic that has been discussed before. It means that the speaker switches or mixes his code to emphasize the topic that is being discussed. On the other hand, the second one is to start new topic by switching or mixing code. The speaker in this show switches or mixes his language to start new topic to be discussed. This table below is the evidence of this possible reason for switching and mixing in Korean music show

After School Club:

(Topic: J-Hope’s sexy dance for fans) Main utterance: Eric: Oh oseul so sexy! [CLOTHES]

(J-Hope only listens to this utterance)

Translation Oh oseul so sexy!= Oh, the clothes is so sexy!

This table above shows the possible reason to mix code that is to talk a particular topic. In this context, the speaker, Eric, is commenting J-Hope for being so sexy in dancing. Eric comments about the clothes that is used by one of BTS members, J-Hope. Eric switches his code into Korean while commenting J-Hope’s clothes. Eric uses oseul instead of clothes to emphasize the topic that is being discussed, that is J-Hope looks so sexy in his clothes. Therefore, the possible reason for the speaker to mix his code in this example is to emphasize the topic that is being discussed. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

To make the analysis above more accurate, here is another utterance that has similar case with the analysis previously:

This table shows the same case with the previous one. The speaker mixes his code because in this context the speaker talks about one topic which is the facial expressions of BTS members when they do some dances. When the speaker talks about BTS members’ facial expression in dancing, he mixes his code from

English into Korean, which is ampo-e or on ammo in English to emphasize his topic. Therefore, this utterance has similarity with the table before.

Translation Juseyo= Please!

To strengthen the previous analysis of the possible reason to switch and mix code in Korean music show After School Club, here is another table to be discussed. This utterance above has the same case as another analysis before. The speaker definitely switches his language to emphasize the topic that is being discussed. The topic itself is that the speaker is asking to play the music. Juseyo juseyo here is used to emphasize the sentence before, which is ‘Music Cue’. It is known that the speaker is asking to play the music for BTS can dance again and then he switches the code into Korean to highlight the topic that is asking to play the music. Consequently, the possible reason in this utterance is to emphasize the topic.

As already mentioned, there are two kinds of this possible reason to switch and mix code. The first one has been discussed in the previous analysis.

Therefore, in the next analysis, the researcher talks more about the second one, the switching and mixing code to start new particular topic.

Translation Algesseumnida! = Alright!

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

45

As it can be seen from the table, the possible reason to switch is talking about particular topic. In comparison to the previous analysis, this reason is different. Previously, the speaker switches his language to emphasize the topic that is being discussed. In constrast, in next table, the speaker changes his language to start a new topic to be discussed. In the first sentence, the speaker uses English to answer BTS members’ question ‘how are you?’. The sentence “Ah very good, very good” is referred to the previous topic, who the best English speaker within BTS members. Then, in the second sentence, he uses Korean to stop the first topic. Algesseumnida here functions as a stop point so that the speaker can start a new topic. This sentence means “alright” in English”. It means that the use of algesseumnida is to start a new topic, which is found in the third sentence, “we’ll see the next question”. The third sentence is the the new topic that is going to be discussed by the speaker and the guest stars. Therefore, starting a new topic in this case also cause a switching or a mixing.

(BTS members and the viewers only listen to Jimin’s utterances)

Translation: Hana dul set= One, two, three...

The utterances above have the same case with the analysis before.

Talking about particular topic is not always to emphasize the topic that is being discussed, but also to talk about the new topic that is going to be discussed. In this context, the speaker counts one, two, three (hana dul set) to make BTS members do what viewers, Megan asked before. Then, she switches her language to English and it is function as a full stop. The word “alright” in this sentence leads to the new context. The new context is that the speaker says thank you to the viewers PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

47

and also end the conversation with the viewers. This means that starting a new topic can cause a switch.

2. Quoting Somebody Else

Quoting somebody else means that the speaker uses the original language to quote someone’s utterances. It implies that the phenomena of switching and mixing code can be caused by quoting somebody else. The researcher provides some evidences to prove that quoting somebody else is considered as one of possible reasons found in the data. Here is the example of the possible reason to switch and mix code in Korean music show After School Club:

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

48

In this table, it can be seen that the speaker uses Korean in the first sentence. Boyeo-juseyo means “please show us” in English. In this context, the speaker asks to show the messages from fans. Then, in the second sentence, he switches his language into English because he is quoting fans’ messages. Eric switches the fans’ messages by using English because the original language of the messages is in English, so he has to quote it in the original one. The context of the fans messages is that the fans would like to clarify that Rapmon is the only member that can speak English. Therefore, it can be concluded that quoting somebody else may cause a code switching.

PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

49

This data shows that quoting somebody else may cause a switch or mix.

In the utterances, the speaker or the host, Eric, mixes his code because he is quoting the message from fans. He quotes Sophie’s messages “Please dance to girl group dances, saranghaeyo BTS”. It can be seen clearly that there is an alteration of code in a sentence, which is from English to Korean. The Korean word is saranghaeyo and the meaning of this is “I love you”. The alteration of code here exists because the speaker quotes the fans messages.

3. Expressing Group Identity

Expressing group identity possibly lead to cause a switching or mixing code. This is one of the possible reasons why the speaker switches or mixes code.

Expressing group identity means the speaker needs to show the identity of a certain group and also need to convey which group they belong to.

In this Korean music show After School Club, it can be noticed that the guest star is Korean boyband, widely known BTS or BangTan Sonyeondan. It cannot be denied that some utterances use their name in Korean since they have to show their identity as Korean and also they want to be known as Korean singer.

As already mentioned, in the data, there are 4 utterances that contain this possible reason. These are the tables to show the evidences of the data:

Cue!

(The viewers and Jimin only listen to Eric’s utterances)

Translation: Bangtan Sonyeondan= Bulletproof Boy Scouts or their name in Korean which is BTS

This is one of the possible reason to switch or mix code found in the speaker’s utterances. As it can be seen, the language base on this data is English.

However, the speaker which is the host itself mixes his code from English into

Korean in the third sentences. The possible reason to mix his code in this context is to express group identity. As already mentioned, Bangtan Sonyeondan is

Korean boyband. In this situation, the host has to introduce today’s guest stars in the show. Therefore, the speaker mixes his language since today’s guest star in the show is Bangtan Sonyeondan and they need to be exposed in Korean because PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

51

they know they belong to certain group or country which is Korea. Thus, expressing group identity definitely cause a switch or mix code.

(BTS members and the viewers only listen to these utterances)

Translation: Bangtan= BTS itself.

This data has a similar case with the previous data. In this case, the focus takes place only in the first sentence. As it can be observed, the possible reason to mix code is also to express group identity. The word bangtan has the same meaning as bangtan sonyeondan. The meaning of these two Korean words is

BTS itself or BTS members itself. The speaker uses bangtan instead of BTS because he would like to express the group identity this boy group belongs to which is Korea. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

52

There are two more data that have similar cases as the two previous analysis. Both of the two data show the same expressions which is Bangtan

Sonyeondan and the result of these two utterances will be the same as before.

Therefore, two analysis of this reason is enough to prove that switching and mixing exists in expressing the group identity.

4. Being Emphatic about Something

Being emphatic about something is one of the possible reasons why the speaker switches or mixes code. Being emphatic means the speaker gives their empathy over something or someone including themselves.

In the data, there is only one data using this reason. The researcher provides the one and only evidence in the tabel below followed by the analysis.

Here is the table:

Translation: Manhi noryeokeul haeyadwilgeotgatayo. Ne... elbeomi jigeum ppalli naomyeon = I guess I should do many efforts. Yes.. The album need to be released quickly.

These utterances show that being emphatic triggers the speaker to switch and mix code. In this context, the speaker, Jimin is being emphatic to herself because the situation at that time triggers her to feel that way. As it can be seen from the translation, she says “I guess I should do many efforts. Yes... The album needs to be released quickly.” The reason that starts making her being emphatic to herself is that in Korean, there are so many people with the same name as Jimin.

For example, BTS Jimin, one of their guest stars in this show. Her colleague, Eric, as the same host, asks about her feeling towards the famous BTS Jimin (this can be seen from the data number 129). That is the reason why she is being emphatic to herself. In expressing the empathy feeling, Jimin switches her code from PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

54

English into her mother language which is Korean. Therefore, it can be concluded that being emphatic possibly lead to switching or mixing code.

5. Repetition Used for Clarification

One of the possible reasons to switch or mix code is repetition used for clarification. It means that the speaker switches or mixes the code to clarify something so that the listener will be understood the speech. The speaker also uses this reason for repeating their utterances in different code in order to explain something.

As already said before, this possible reason is the dominant one used by the speaker or the hosts in Korean music show After School Club. After analyzing the data, there are 48 utterances of the speaker that contain this reason. The researcher provides some evidences in the form of table followed by the analysis.

Here is the table:

(The viewers and BTS members only listen to Eric’s utterances)

Translation: Insa deribnida =Please say hello...

The table above shows the possible reason to switch code is repetition used for clarification. The focus of this data is on the second and third sentences.

As it can be spotted, the speaker uses English in uttering his speech in the second sentence. Next, in the third one, he switches his language into Korean. Both of these two sentences have the same meaning that is asking to say hello or giving greetings. The speaker uses Korean at the third sentence because he clarifies his speech to be understood by the guest stars since they are Korean who do not use

English as their daily language. Therefore, in this data, the most appropriate reason to switch or mix code is clarifying something by repeating.

This table shows a similar case to the previous data. In the first and second sentences, Jimin, the speaker, uses English in giving a speech. Then, in the next sentence, Jimin switches her language into her mother tongue which is

Korean. She switches because she is being triggered to repeat her speech into

Korean in order the listener can understand the meaning of her utterances. She repeats her speech in another language to clarify so that it will be more understandable for the guest stars.

Translation: Dubunda neomu jalhasineyo! = The two of you are very good!

This table above shows the occurrence of switching exists because of the repetition used for clarification. It can be seen clearly that in the first sentence,

Eric uses English to talk and then he switches his language into Korean to give same information to the listeners, J-Hope and Jeongkook that the two of them are doing good. The speaker or the host does translate what he says in English so that

BTS members especially the listeners can understand what is going on in the show at that moment. This means that Eric as the speaker clarifies the sentence by repeating his code in another language or simply it can be said as translating.

To support the previous analysis, here is another table to be discussed:

In the data above, it can be seen that the speaker uses English in the first sentence. After that, he switches his language to Korean in the second sentence.

The possible reason for switching his code is clarifying his speech by repeating his dialogue in another language. The speaker knows the participants when he is talking. In this context, the speaker understands that he has to translate his speech so that their Korean guest stars can comprehend and answer the question since the sentence is an interrogative sentence. Therefore, by repeating his utterances in another code, in this situation is Korean, the speaker clarifies it and there is no side who does not understand his speech.

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION

In this chapter, the results of the two research problems are portrayed.

The first research problem is to find the types of code switching and code mixing used in Korean Music Show After School Club. Then, the second one is to discover the possible reasons for switching and mixing code in Korean Music

Show After School Club.

As already mentioned in chapter IV, the types of code switching and code mixing are categorized into Intra-Sentential, Inter-Sentential, and

Emblematic Switching. The most used type by the hosts in this show is the Inter-

Sentential Switching with 74 utterances in total. There are 28 utterances for Intra-

Sentential Switching and there are no utterance using Emblematic Switching. For the possible reasons to switch and mix code in this show, the most used is the

Repetition Used for Clarification with 48 utterances in total. Then, for the second position for possible reason to switch and mix code is Talking about Particular

Topic with 47 utterances in total. The other possible reasons are: 4 utterances for

Quoting Somebody Else, 4 utterances for Expressing Group Identity, 1 utterance for Being Emphatic about something and there is no utterance for Interjection.

In the first problem, the researcher found that only two from the three types of code switching and code mixing are applied by the speakers in the show.

The first type is intra-sentential. This type exists in a word or sentence level within a sentence. The second type is inter-sentential. Inter-Sentential exists between sentences. It means that the alteration of code switching happens between

59 PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

60

sentences. In this study, the last type, emblematic switching does not occur in the utterances of the speaker. Therefore, there are only two types that applied by the hosts in this show which are intra-sentential and inter-sentential.

In the second problem, the researcher found that there are only 5 from 6 possible reasons for the hosts to switch and mix code exist in the show. The first possible reason to switch and mix code is talking about particular topic. From the analysis, the researcher found two ways in which the code switching or code mixing occurs in the show. The first one is to emphasize the topic that is being discussed. The second one is to start a new topic. Then, the second possible reason is Quoting Somebody Else. This means that the speaker quotes someone’s utterances in the original language. The third possible reason is Interjection.

Unfortunately, there is no code switching occurence in which Interjection happens. The fourth is to express group identity. It means that the speaker convey the group identity by switching and mixing code. Another possible reason to switch and mix code is being emphatic about something. In the analysis, the researcher found that the speaker is being emphatic about herself. Therefore, being emphatic means giving empathy over something included the speaker itself.

The last possible reason for switching and mixing code is repetition used for clarification. This possible reason used by the speaker to clarify the speech. From the analysis, the speaker repeats the code in another language to make it more understandable for the listeners.

As it can be seen from the data, the most used type of code switching is

Inter-sentential and the most possible reason that is used by the speaker is to PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI

61

repeat for clarifying speech. These two research problem are related. It is because the speaker used both of the research problems to translate the utterances since the guest stars are Korean and they do not use English as daily language.
