Nick Kardulias Department of Sociology and Anthropology 2016-2017 ABSTRACT Today's modern world is experiencing a great exchange of people, which has implications for the immigrant identity as well as the national identity of the countries to which they move. Ethnic enclaves are neighborhoods in urban areas that have a high ethnic population and/or a specific cultural identity. Enclaves are predominately composed of immigrant populations and can provide them with networks of social capital, knowledge, economics, and culture and may impact their integration process into a new host society. This research study explores the influence of ethnic enclaves on the immigrant integration process and immigrants' navigation of personal and national identity through case studies in Columbus, Ohio and France. The research focuses on the degree of immigrants' integration based on six factors of the immigrant life experience: level of language proficiency of the host country, employment status, education level, income level, specific attachment to certain racial and/or ethnic groups, and amount of time spent in the host country. This study seeks to understand the diversity of the immigrant integration process and critically analyzes the differences of this process between the United States and France. By utilizing data collected through seven interviews, the present study indicates that not all immigrants need to rely on ethnic enclaves for such support, specifically those immigrants with high levels of educational attainment or skill as entrepreneurs. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First and foremost I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the participants of this research study. INTRODUCTION The Question This research study is motivated by the personal experiences of immigrants, myself included. During my sophomore year at The College of Wooster, I went Lowe’s to get some bolts to fix my futon. I went by myself. I quickly found what I was looking for and went to stand in line at the cash register. Spontaneously, the man in front of me turned around and looked me up and down before asking, "Where are you from?” I told him Granville, Ohio, since this is where I have spent the majority of my life, 17 whole years. "No, no,” he said, waving my answer away with his hand, “Where are you originally from?" Of course, this was not a new question, I have heard it before and I know many others have too. I answered honestly, explaining that I am adopted from China. His eyes seemed to brighten and he exclaimed, "Oh, you're one of them throwaway babies, aren't you?" I was completely, deeply shocked. I just stared back at him while his son continued to load two by fours onto the register. Nobody said a word and it was the most painful thing, I have never felt so alone. It is hard to identify with a place, group of people, or even a nation after such hurtful and disorienting interactions. This moment, although probably less than three minutes in total, has stuck with me for years. Navigating identity is not just the burden of individuals, but whole nations. In an increasingly globalized world, immigration is becoming more common. As nations become more diverse, it becomes imperative for them to be inclusive of such diversity, or risk creating deep inequality and segregation. It is unhealthy and dangerous for members of the same society to be fearful or apprehensive of one another. Ultimately, I hope that someday, when an Asian American girl says she from Granville, Ohio, that such an answer is enough. That we, as a nation, can believe her reality. 1 Problem Statement Recent globalization trends have created an exchange of ideas, culture, language, and people on a scale that the world has never seen before. As humans shuffle from place to place, they bring with them their own heritage and identity, effectively diversifying the new environments in which they settle.

The chapters examine the experience of thirteen countries, which vary considerably in terms of their economic situations, policy and political contexts, immigration histories and minority experiences. Minority internal migration is examined in Belgium, London, Portugal (Lisbon), The Netherlands (Amsterdam), Israel, Scotland, Germany, Turkey, Greece (Athens), Britain, Italy, Sweden and Spain. This concluding chapter aims to complement Chapter 1 by revisiting the common themes outlined, summarising the findings of the book, and considering some of the important differences between chapters, thus identifying priorities, prospects and challenges for minority internal migration research. McClelland All Rights Reserved Abstract Identity and Agency: Majority and Minority Ethnic Voting in New Democracies Benjamin P. McClelland This dissertation examines how ethnic identities are politicized through elections in new democracies. Using the cases of post-communist Latvia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, I compare the electoral success of campaigns which appeal to voters on the basis of ethnicity to those do not. I argue that ethnic parties are most likely in groups for whom two conditions are met. First, ethnicity must meaningfully differentiate ethnic insiders from outsiders, in such a way that voters will believe policy benefits will likely result from political representation for the group. Second, electoral institutions must ensure that the political mobilization of the group will result in electoral victory. These two conditions create fundamentally different incentives for ethnic majority groups and ethnic minority groups simply because of differences in group size. In most democracies with a large minority population, ethnic voting will be more likely among the majority group than the minority group, unless institutions encourage minority group voting by lowering barriers to entry. The results demonstrate the qualitatively different ways groups use ethnic identities as a resource to achieve political objectives, with important implications for minority group representation, political participation, and democratic governance in diverse societies.     ETHNIC ENCLAVES AND THE ECONOMIC SUCCESS OF IMMIGRANTS—EVIDENCE FROM A NATURAL EXPERIMENT* PER-ANDERS EDIN PETER FREDRIKSSON OLOF ÅSLUND Recent immigrants tend to locate in ethnic “enclaves” within metropolitan areas. The economic consequence of living in such enclaves is still an unresolved issue. We use data from an immigrant policy initiative in Sweden, when govern- ment authorities distributed refugee immigrants across locales in a way that we argue is exogenous. This policy initiative provides a unique natural experiment, which allows us to estimate the causal effect on labor market outcomes of living in enclaves. We nd substantive evidence of sorting across locations. When sorting is taken into account, living in enclaves improves labor market outcomes for less skilled immigrants: the earnings gain associated with a standard deviation in- crease in ethnic concentration is 13 percent. Furthermore, the quality of the enclave seems to matter. Members of high-income ethnic groups gain more from living in an enclave than members of low-income ethnic groups. I. INTRODUCTION In most countries, immigrants tend to be spatially concen- trated [Stark 1991]. This is particularly true for the United States, where almost three-quarters of immigrants resided in only six states in 1998; see Borjas [1999]. It emphasizes the consolida­ tion of the caste system during the colonial era, intra regional disparities within the two communities, high population densities, very weak economic bases, poverty, and international interference as some of the cardinal dynamics behind the current deadly con­ tentions within the two states. An analysis behind the genocidal tendencies in the two countries is well illus­ trated, with special emphasis on the Rwandese tragedy of 1994 as well as its parallels and diver­ gences with the Nazi Holocaust. The reason for writing this paper was inspired by a ques­ tion in the African HistoryAffa irs Paper at the Advanced School Certificate level by the now defunct East African Examinations Council in 1976, which asked why Rwanda and Burundi had frequently fallen prey to "tribal" wars. It is quite obvious that the situation in Rwanda and Burundi in 1976 was by any stretch of imagination "more tame" than the one in 1996. Nevertheless this examination question of 1976 was timely in that by that year Rwanda had experienced its first fully-fledged post colo- 62 lsabirye/Mahmoudi-Conflicts nial military coup that had taken place in 1973, while Burundi had undergone its first mass scale pogroms directed against the majority-Hutu population, which had left up to 250,000 of them dead in 1972.

The enforcement of anti-Chinese immigration laws, starting in the late 19th century, initiated the creation of the U.S. as a “gatekeeping nation-state.” Scholars have examined the boundaries formed by exclusion of Asians and Asian Americans from the social and physical spaces of U.S. society. In this work, an intersectional analysis of Chinese immigrant and Chinese American women and families complicates existing narratives of U.S. immigration, race, and gender. By focusing on women’s experiences as boundary-crossers who challenged community prescriptions and anti-Chinese policies, this work shifts the historiography away from male, working-class immigrants. In its broadest arguments, this dissertation 1) constructs a social history of Chinese America using the experiences of transnational students, interracial families, and Chinese American women who were expatriated via marriage and then re-claimed their U.S. citizenship; 2) argues that these women’s gendered negotiation of state power changed the ways in which white immigration officials perceived them, a ground-level foreshadowing of post-World War II raced and gendered immigration dynamics; 3) challenges the normative idea of Chinese America as coastal, urban Chinatown space and co-ethnic community; and 4) re-maps Chinese ii America through regional mobility and networks, focusing on understudied areas of the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic.
