outdoor club 2013 summer-fall trip schedule

The dates in the schedule below represent Saturdays except where noted. However, a trip may be changed to Sunday at the leader’s discretion or even cancelled based on weather or other unforseen circumstances. Similarly, a destination may be altered due to weather or access conditions. Please contact the trip leaders several days in advance for confirmation and registration.

June 2 Karen George (724-2620; Minna’s Ridge (B1) – hike, ski or snowshoe up to this (Sunday) [email protected]) open subalpine ridge located in the upper Cameron Valley across from Mt. Moriarty.

June 2 Dave Horst (723-7796; Taylor River Canoe Trip – take advantage of the (Sunday) – [email protected]) spring runoff to paddle the Taylor River (west of alternate Sproat Lake). Contact Dave for details/skill level activity required.

June 8 Rudy Brugger (723-8289; Pogo Mountain (C2 – C3) – a challenging climb up [email protected]) this peak that dominates Sutton Pass. This quote taken from a blog could be yours: “After years of driving by it, I said enough is enough and did something about it this weekend.” Ice axe & crampons required.

June 15 Gillian Kamma (720-5699; Mt. Klitsa (B2 – C2) – Sk, hike or snowshoe [email protected]) adventure into the alpine on one of ’s landmark peaks. Approach from the Nahmint Valley, via the Brooke George Trail.

June 22 Laurie Money (724-4174; Cherry Creek to Horne Lake (B2) - starting in [email protected]) Cherry Creek area, hike past Lacy Lake and down to Horne Lake Park and lunch on the beach.

June 29 & 30 Karli Van Vliet (778-421-3404; Wild Side Trail (A2) – This trail (22km round trip) on (Sat & Sun) [email protected]) Flores Island is a 30 minute water taxi ride from (Canada Day Tofino. There is also a $25 per person fee for use of Long the trail. Please contact Karli at least 7 days in advance Weekend) if you wish to participate.

JULY July 1 to 15 Dave Horst (723-7796; Clearwater River Canoe Trip – this river runs from (approx.) [email protected]) NW Saskatchewan into Alberta,eventually joining the Athabaska River at Fort McMurray. Requires at least intermediate experience level. Please contract Dave at least 2 weeks in advance if you wish to participate.

July 6 Karen George (724-2620; Mt. Apps (B1-B2) – A lovely subalpine area in the [email protected]) Beaufort Range dotted with tarns and with beautiful views in all directions. Some snow may still be present in early July.

July 13 Ursula Knoll (723-6883; Cokely Mt. & Rosseau Trail from Saddle (B2) - [email protected]) Fantastic 360 views from the ridge; short scramble from the Saddle onto the ridge.

July 20 Harry Schwartz (723-0191; Mt. 5040 via Cobalt Lake (B2) - From the divide [email protected]) between Marion Creek and the Effingham River climb to Cobalt lake and beyond; great views of Triple Peak, Nahmint Mt. and many other surrounding peaks.

July 27 Karen George (724-2620; Mt. Adder (via Nahmint Valley) (B2 – C2) – [email protected]) Rewarding 360 degree views from the summit of this bluffy mountain. A perennial favourite.

AUGUST August 4, 5 & No scheduled activity 6 (BC Day Long Weekend) August 9, 10 Karli Van Vliet (778-421-3404; (B2 – C2) – travel by boat to the upper end & 11 (Friday, [email protected]) of , then hike the 16 km trail to the Saturday & base of these 440m high falls in Strathcona Park. A Sunday) secondary 3.5km steep climb to Love Lake affords commanding views of the area. Please contact Karli at least a week in advance.

August 17, 18 Dave Horst (723-7796; Upper Nimpkish River Paddling adventure – paddle & 19 (Sat, [email protected]) a section of the longest river system on Vancouver Sun, Mon) Island, located in the vicinity of Woss. Please contact Dave at least a week in advance if you wish to participate.

August 18 Kurtis Felker (250) 585-7604; Mt. Becher loop (B2) - Mt. Becher via Boston Ridge. (Sunday) [email protected]) Start/Finish at old Forbidden Plateau Ski Lodge. Moderate to strenuous with some steep sections. 700m elevation gain. 16 kms. 6 - 8 hours.

August 24 Harry Schwartz (723-0191; Grizzly Meadows (B2) –hike to Louise Goetting Lake, [email protected]) turn south and scramble up the ridge to enjoy the wildflowers in this alpine meadow near Jack’s Peak situated between Adder Mtn. & 5040 Mtn.

August 31 Karen George (724-2620; Mt. Klitsa from Nahmint 600 (B2) – Brooke George (Labour Day [email protected]) & Rudy memorial trip. A popular hike and September is one of weekend) Brugger (723-8289; the best months to experience this alpine area. [email protected])

SEPTEMBER September 7 Rudy Brugger (723-8289; Mt. Arrowsmith via the “Nose” (C3) – a humbling, [email protected]) awe-inspiring, adrenaline-pumping experience, but not recommended for the acrophobic. Permission from the trip leader required for participation.

September 14 Judy Carlson (724-4535; Emerald (Jewel) Lake circuit (B2) – joint trip with [email protected]) and Karen Parks & Rec. Climb to the Arrowsmith-Cokely George (724-2620; Saddle, then traverse below the east ridge of [email protected]) Arrowsmith, through the debris from a decades-old airplane crash, down to the lake and climb back up to the Saddle (or the reverse direction)

September 21 Kurtis Felker (250) 585-7604; Mt. Benson (B2) - Mt. Benson from Witchcraft Lake. [email protected]) Direct route up trail 2. Moderate to strenuous; some steep sections. 700m elevation gain. 8 kms. 5 - 5.5 hrs.

September 28 Rudy Brugger (723-8289; Triple Peak (C3) - This stunning peak in the upper [email protected]) and Gillian Marion Creek area offers lots of challenges. Climb the Kamma (720-5699; waterfall route to the lower of two lakes; then possibly [email protected]) on to the peak or up a steep watercourse to the upper alpine lake.

OCTOBER October 5 Randy Taylor (723-3996) Brigade Lake (B1) – Trail begins near Sutton Pass and climbs through yew-strewn forest to a subalpine Lake at the west end of the Klitsa Plateau.

October 12, turkey No hike scheduled for this weekend 13 & 14 (Thanksgiving weekend) October 19 Ursula Knoll (723-6883; Mt. Moriarty (B2 – C2) - Trail starts at east shore of [email protected]) Labour Day Lake; steep climb through the forest into open country then up a short bluff to gain the long ridge to the summit.

October 25 Ursula Knoll (723-6883; AVOC AGM and Potluck Dinner Social - at Echo (Friday) [email protected]) or Fieldhouse; dinner at 6:30pm; doors open at 6pm. Karen George (724-2620; [email protected])

October 26 Robert Gunn (723-3350; Cous Estuary Canoe/Kayak Trip (A1) – with luck [email protected]) this excursion should provide good viewing of the chum salmon run.

NOVEMBER November 2 Ursula Knoll (723-6883; Mt. Horne (B2) - From Cathedral Grove, hike to this [email protected]) domed summit with a lovely view of Cameron Lake.

Remainder of November & month of December – no hikes scheduled due to B.C. Rain Festival and seasonal holiday preparations and celebrations. Winter/Spring schedule due to start early January.

Notes: 1. Size of trip party may be limited at the leader’s discretion due to consideration of transportation, equipment, skill requirements, etc. 2. It is expected that an offer of assistance toward vehicle costs will be made to the driver when sharing transport. 3. Permission to bring pets on trip at leader’s discretion. 4. Are you interested in trying something new but don’t yet have the equipment? The Club has some extra ice axes, crampons, helmets, and snowshoes. Contact Harold Carlson or Karen George for more information. Some members have canoes but may need paddling partners; call the trip leader.

Club Rules & Regulations: 1. Everyone participating in Club trips does so at their own risk. There may at times be some degree of danger. While the Leader will take reasonable precautions, neither the Leader nor the club will be held responsible for any injury, loss of life, or loss of property. Participants must be willing to sign a waiver in order to go on Club trips or engage in other Club-sanctioned activities. 2. Life jackets must be worn while on the water during Club trips. 3. Non-members are welcome to try out Club trips. Guests are, however, expected to become members after two trips.

Trip Grading: This grading must be considered as a general indication of the levels of fitness and experience which is required on outings. An allowance must be made for poor weather and other unpredictable conditions, in deciding whether to participate. Extra caution must be taken with the canoeing and kayaking trips, as the wind can come up suddenly and make the trip a lot more difficult.

Membership Fees:

Dues - Full Year; including membership in the Federation of Mountain Clubs of BC: Single - $25.00 Family - $45.00 Associate - $5.00 Club fees are based on the insurance year (May 1 to April 30) and are payable at the previous AGM in Nov. or by May 1. The allocation of these fees is as follows: $15 - Federation of Mountain Clubs of BC (per person) $ 6 - Liability Insurance via. the FMCBC $ remaining - towards club expenses Associates must be members of the FMCBC via. another Club or individually Contact one of the Club executives for a membership application form.
