  • Hydrogeophysical Evaluation of Aquifer of the Lower Orashi River
International Journal of Advanced Academic Research | Sciences, Technology and Engineering | ISSN: 2488-9849 Vol. 5, Issue 8 (August 2019) HYDROGEOPHYSICAL EVALUATION OF AQUIFER UNITS AROUND THE LOWER ORASHI RIVER AREA, SOUTHEASTERN NIGERIA 1MBAGWU E.C., 1IBENEME S.I., 1OKEREKE C.N AND 1EZEBUNANWA A.C. 1Department of Geology, Federal University of Technology Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria. Corresponding Authors: [email protected], [email protected] ABSTRACT Hydrogeophysical characteristics of the aquifers of the Lower Orashi River Area, Southeastern Nigeria was done using VES to delineate the aquifers and evaluate their geometric characteristics. The study area is underlain by the Ameki, Ogwashi and Benin Formations. The unconsolidated nature of the Formations and their high susceptibility to contamination have made this study imperative, as it would assist water resource planners and developers in the area to understand the best way to plan and site boreholes in the area. Eighty eight (88) Schlumberger Vertical Electrical Soundings (VES) were carried out in various parts of the study area with a maximum electrode separation (AB/2) of 350 m. The VES data were processed using a combination of curve matching techniques and computer iterative modeling. The study revealed seven to ten geo-electric layers with varying lithologies majorly sand units and a multiple aquifer system ranging from confined to unconfined aquifers. The results indicate that aquifer thickness ranges from 20m to about 227m. A quantitative interpretation of the curves

It derives its name from Imo River which currently forms a natural boundary between the state and Abia State that was carved out from it in 1991. Imo State has an estimated area of 5,156.6 sq.kilometres. The state has 27 LGAs and is culturally homogeneous, with the inhabitants being largely Igbo. The major language is Igbo although the official language is English. With population density ranging between 200-1500 persons per square kilometer, there is much pressure on the land. Land therefore is a very sensitive issue in the cultural heritage of the Igbo people. The population is almost evenly distributed across the state, and family compound setting is very important and strong. The major nucleated settlements in the state include Owerri, Okigwe and Orlu. Owerri is the capital, and attracts many people from all over the state that still retain their indigenous home affiliation. • Information Kit for 2015 General Elections
INFORMATION KIT FOR 2015 GENERAL ELECTIONS 1 FOREWARD The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has come a long way since 2011 in making the Nigerian electoral process transparent, as a way of ensuring that elections are free, fair and credible and that they measure up to global best standards of democratic elections. We have done this not only by reforms that have been in the electoral procedures, but also in the way informationon the process is made available for public use and awareness. Even though the yearnings of many Nigerians for a perfect electoral process may not have been fulfilled yet, our reforms since 2011 has ensured incremental improvement in the quality and credibility of elections that have been conducted. Beginning with some of the Governorship elections conducted by INEC since 2013, the Commission began to articulate Information Kits for the enlightenment of the public, especially election observers and journalists who may need some background information in order to follow and adequately undertstand the electoral process. With the 2015 General Elections scheduled to take place nationwide, this document is unique, in that it brings together electoral information about all the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). I am optimistic that this kit will contribute to the body of knowledge about the Nigerian electoral system and enhance the transparency of the 2015 elections.
